i rented a boom mic and pole for a film shoot, and i'd definitely rent from them again. great service and great prices, very friendly and helpful. they're on cahuenga and fountain, and i always find street parking right out in front. check them out when you need audio gear for your next shoot.

if you work in the area, i highly recommend their little prepared meals for lunch. they have sushi, and all kinds of inexpensive rice bowls like curry, pork or chicken cutlets, mabo rice, etc for about $5, and bigger bento boxes. they have 2 microwaves you can use. you can grab a green iced tea in a can, and a box of pocky, and there's your lunch.

it's my favorite dish there. they give you so much, i usually take half of it home for later. it comes with this good beef broth soup, and it's only 6 or 7 bucks. they also have a lot of good ramen dishes, hence their name. i like their shoyu ramen. also, their dumplings (gyoza) are excellent, not that dumplings are that hard to get right. the restaurant is cash only, so keep that in mind. the staff there is friendly and quick.

if you don't know, giant robot started out as a magazine about asian american culture, film, music, etc. just a bunch of cool random stuff. then they opened this store of the same name. like their magazine, they have a lot of cool random stuff. toys, books, dvd's, other magazines, etc. then there's gr2 down the street, where they sell yet more shirts and toys and stationery. but gr2 also has art openings by illustrators that sometimes do their magazine covers. off the top of my head, i remember they had one by kozyndan, and adrianne tomine, the guy that does optic nerve. so if you're looking to buy tofu toy dolls, art books, or funky tshirts, check out giant robot.

anastasia's asylum is an unusual name for a cafe, but it's a good alternative to all the starbucks and coffee beans out there. besides good coffee drinks, they also have a good selection of healthy food, including vegetarian options. they also have dessert. the place has a warm atmosphere, more inviting than most other cafes. at night they often have some live music that plays on their second floor. this may or may not be good depending on what you're trying to do. if you're just hanging out, it's nice. if you're trying to study or write, it may distract you. i don't think they have free wireless access, but most cafes these days charge for that service anyway.

i live in santa monica and drive all the way out to encino just to see dr. reifman. he does cosmetic dentistry and general dentistry as well. i first saw him under a minor emergency circumstance, and even though i wasn't even a current patient, he saw me the next day and took care of me. he's up to date with the newest technologies, and they're very accomodating with all your insurance issues. they're very upfront and let you know how much your next visit and procedure will cost. i highly recommend dr. reifman if you're looking for a dentist, even if you don't live near encino.
