located in a nondescript minimall, this place offers authentic and tasty meals at such affordable prices. i'm a huge fan of their chicken mole, as well as their menudo (when you can get it since they only offer it on the weekends and it runs out!)
their tacos are great, small round tortillas filled with generous helpings of asado (or the meat of your choice) with onions and cilantro. they also have a mini bakery on site where families come in with their small children and get several loaves for the day. its very homey and tasty.

i love going to this little tiny place on lincoln. they have another location in westchester, but i'm afraid it won't be as good. its always packed, and you sit elbow to elbow with your fellow diners. but the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, so no one minds when you ask the diners next to you to please pass the balsamic.
portions are HUGE. not ridiculous over the top huge like C&O's, but still very big. i'm a fan of the eggplant mama mia, as well as the linguine pescatore. my husband, who doesn't like italian, will gladly eat here and order their great thin crust pizza.
they do not serve alcohol, so its bring your own. and even better, there's no corkage fee, so bring a bunch!
oh, almost forgot, the garlic oil and bread that they serve at the beginning of your meal is so good, but you'll reek of the good stuff for days! and its worth it!
GO GO GO!

a bakery attached to a restaurant, or a restaurant attached to a bakery? in any case, this place delivers decent hawaiian food, and good cakes for little birthday parties and the like. the laulau is very tasty, but the kalua pork is quite salty. the macaroni salad is again saltier than what i've had before, but it wasn't the end of the world. service is brisk, and portions are large.
the bakery is bright and filled with lots of tempting options. a coworker insists on their chocolate cake, but i wasn't impressed. for better hawaiian, there's back home in lahaina on PCH...

went here on a weeknight, and yes, it was crowded. but although our reservations were for 6:30 and we were running about a half hour late, they still sat us at a nice and cozy booth. i heard lots of great things about the appetizer fondue so we had to order it (for five people). what came was a tiny ramekin of a cheesy mixture, with toasted bread and apple slices. it was tasty, but the size was tiny compared to what i expected.
our food portions were generous and satisfying. the flavors were nothing groundbreaking, but this is not a five star restaurant. the wine flowed freely, staff were friendly and accomodating and even helpful when we asked for recommendations. i would definitely go back- its a nice place to go with friends for a leisurely dinner.

this bakery doesn't seem to have one bad product in its assortment. the madelines are lemony, the fruit tarts and merengues are light and heavenly, and the sticky buns (miniature bite size ones) are fantastic! you really can't eat just one.
add to that a great staff that is as personable as their pastries are delicious and its a winning combo.
even my father, who is not a fan of macaroons, couldn't keep away from the chocolate dipped versions from this place.
the merengues make great hostess gifts!

this is the japanese style of shabu shabu (as opposed to the chinese hot pot) and is served in individual pots rather than one communal pot for a party. the line was almost unbearable, which i suppose means this place is a popular place. it took almost an hour to get a seat at around 7/ 8pm on a saturday night for a party of four..
the shabu shabu was pretty good- large plate of fresh veggies for the pot, as well as tofu. i ordered the large beef shabu shabu and my husband ordered the seafood shabu shabu. again, meats and fish looked fresh and were ample portions. you can only blame yourself if your food comes out not tasting right to you as you are the chef in a shabu shabu establishment. there are condiments to season your meats and veggies as well as two sauces to flavor your items once you've cooked them in the broth (ponzu sauce and a peanut/ soy sauce). very yummy and depending on the type of meat you order, it is a very healthy meal.

i don't normally order fried rice at a thai joint, but it was lunch, and i was craving a little comfort food. the pineapple fried rice here hit the spot. lots of good chunks of pineapple, and tasty chunks of chicken. the sweetness of the pineapple was a good balance to the meat and the rice.
their salads are also pretty satisfying with just the right amount of dressing.
i usually order takeout from this place, as it is near where i work, but the delivery is quick and i get a nice change of pace from the usual italian places nearby.

its nice to get a little variety within the very japanese minimall on sawtelle. i wasn't planning on liking anything here, but i did. the fried rice was decent (i guess i was just in the mood for fried rice) and the pork chops were good and garlicky. i was surprised by the decent portions. we ordered a tad too much because we didn't know how big the dishes were going to be.
the minced chicken in lettuce cups were pretty good and filling.
overall, a nice place for a quick bite if you've suddenly got a craving for chinese.

this place is a favorite for large parties and the like. its so noisy, however, that i don't think it would be great for a romantic dinner. their garlic rolls are hot, buttery, and super garlicky- its nice that they pass them out to people that are waiting for a table. the singalongs are also a hoot- makes people feel happier and breaks the ice in the room.
the food though, is just okay. nothing groundbreaking in any of their dishes, except that portions are humongous. unless you're practicing for a food eating contest, don't even try to finish your plate here.

the chili thai chicken is exceptional, although greasy, and the eggplant delight is also tasty. they make a mean rad nah, and the pad thai is basic. their seafood coconut soup is great, but their wor wonton soup is lacking. the curries are all winners, but my favorite would be the green curry. don't bother with the pineapple curry- the sweetness of the pineapple is too cloying with the thick texture of the curry.
