Used and rare books galore! 8/19/2005

I love a bookstore, especially one where I feel free to take a peek under the covers. Naturally, this makes me a big fan of any used book store. Wentworth & Leggett in Brightleaf Square is pleasant, filled with books of every vintage organized by subject and author. The lighting is satisfactory, but like most used book stores suffers from inter-shelf dark regions. Older and more valuable books - many of particular local interest - are kept near the clerk's desk, and there is usually a pile of books on a nearby discount table. The selection is reasonable, even excellent in local and American history books; however, even common science and theological books I've hunted seem never to be around. The clerk generally tries to be helpful, but seems to understand that if he lets me browse I'm more likely to buy something that wasn't on my list. The checkout system is a real blast from the past: book information and pricing is kept in a ledger, and the clerk calculates as you wait. They do take credit cards, but the machine has been broken on at least two of my visits, so I try to stick to cash-and-carry. In summary, I would not use this as a library substitute; books are fairly expensive for a used book store in this area, and since I read little American history I find that it lacks a lot of selection - a fact somewhat tempered by its great location and reasonable inventory turnover. more
