The Austin Museum of Art is fairly small so they have different shows. I don't think they have any more permenant pieces and everytime I've been there the current show has taken up the entire mesuem. The two best shows I've seen was a collection of modern Cuban artiststhat I just happened to stumble upon and the Andy Warhol exhibit. Other times I have been there the shows weren't that good so I would suggest you check to see what's happening before going down there.

This is probably the biggest costume shop I have every been in. It's not only a big shop but it's packed to the gills with every costume you can every imagine. They sell full costumes here as well as accessories for putting together your own costume like wigs, shoes, hats, and makeup. This isn't one of those shops that opens up a few weeks before Halloween then closes on November 1st, they are open year round so if you need a costume for another holiday or party make this your first stop. They also have a great selection of masks. Be warned though if you want to rent a costume for Halloween go early, this place gets busy at that time.

New Bohemia is probably one of my favorite retro/vintage stores in Austin. They have tons of "stuff" like clothes, jewelry, shoes, appliances, furniture, etc.. the list goes on and one. They have things here that I never new existed like a portable bar that I got for $15. It folds up and looks like a small suitcase but inside is a shaker, two glasses, ice tongs, etc. Cool! The prices here are a bit cheaper than your average vintage store which is a plus. Their jewelry prices are especially reasonable.

The Hotel San Jose is not cheap but it's worth it if you're on a luxury vacation or spending a night away from the house. The building is truly unique looking with a great courtyard layout and the location is fantastic, right on South Congress across the street of the legendary COntinental Club. Connected to the hotel is Joe's coffee stand that can fill you up in the morning with fresh coffee and breakfast. If you're going to stay here you might as well go all out and get a sweet. They include all the regular amenities in beautifully designed and decorated rooms.

When friends come into town and need a place to stay I wouldn't think of recommending anywhere besides the Austin Motel, The funky antique neon sign that hangs out onto Congress street lets you know that you're in for something different. The price is good (less than $100 per night) and each room has been furnished and decorated uniquely. There are small single bed rooms all the way up to multi-room suites. The best part however is the pool. A good size kidney shaped pool with beautiful flowers blooming all around makes you feel like you're in an old movie.

If you love Texas (and how can you not?) the Bob Bullock Museum will be heaven on earth. When the great big bronze star meets you at the outside entrance you know you're in for a purely Texas treat (everything in Texas is bigger you know!). Walking through the museum you get to see everything Texas old and older. From Texas in the movies (cowboys and more cowboys) to the things of later Texas history like the space program you get to see that Texas is truly a unique state, My favorite part is the special rotating displays. The last time I went there was a display on Texas baseball that was truly fantastic.

Toy Joy is the mother of all independent toy stores in Austin, At Toy Joy you'll find everything you're looking for toy wise. Here they have both ironic kitsch stuff that's great for displaying around your house as well as good old fashion stuff for the kids. They have a good selection of educational stuff for your little genius. Toy joy also has a great selection of import toys from Asia (mostly Japan) where they always seem to be about 2 or 3 years ahead of us in cool toys. However my favorite thing about toy joy is the candy and stickers. Cool candy that you've never seen before and any kind of sticker you can imagine. Don't have kids? Who cares, go to Toy Joy and you'll feel like one yourself.

If for some reason you're like me and get a kick of old toys from the 60's 70's and 80's you'll be in hog heaven at hog wild. You can find normal collectible things here like comic books, action figures, etc. You'll also find tons of odd things like board games from T.V. shows you never knew existed and ridiculous coffee mugs. They also have a small selection of men's and women's vintage clothing and some cool vintage furniture to boot. This is one of Quinten Tarintino's favorite places in Austin and it's no surprise with his love of everything 70's kitsch.

The movie store reminds me of the places my family would rent movies from before Blockbuster et. al became so big (and it's not just the VHS tapes). It's kind of musty in there and they seem to be more concerned with holding on to old junk then getting the new releases. That would be fine if they specialized in obscure art or foreign films or masterpieces but the older films I saw there were more along the line of things you want to forget. If you want the newest releases go to one of the big chain stores, they're probably your best bet (the movie store seems to only have one or two copies of even the newest biggest hits). If you're looking for indie/art or foreign films Austin has a few great independent stores where you can find what you're looking for. Sorry but I'm going to have to suggest that you skip the movie store.

The Hyde Park gym looks like the kind of place that hungry young boxers train in gritty movies. This is not your brightly lit, feel good, chain store gym, this is a place to work out! It's a lot smaller than other big name gyms in town but that's because the people here know what they're doing and only have the equipment you need. The trainers are friendly but will definitely push you if you're not giving your all. Everyone here is friendly and ready to work out, this is not a meat market where people stand around and maybe lift a weight here and there. The only drawback is that sometimes it can get fairly crowded. Work around your schedule and find a time that's good for you and gives you access to all the equipment.
