Chuck at High Country Hearth is who we get all our gas logs and fireplaces from. He's really nice to work with and will try to help you get what you need when you need it. He drove two hours to come check out a problem at our house and help us figure out what was causing a soot problem. We are happy to send business his way. Next time your'e looking for gas logs or accessories, give them a try!

This is two brothers who we used to do our new home. They are really nice guys and they give you a fair price to do an exceptional job. They do what they say they will do, when they say they will do it. We had one small problem about six months after we moved in and they came and fixed it, quickly, for free. If you are looking for plumbers who will do a good job, give 'em a call!

If you're looking for a good electrician in the Banner Elk area, call Brent at Quality Electric. We have used him for several houses and he always does a really good job. He does a lot of the nicer homes in Linville Ridge and mountain areas. He's familiar with the latest technologies and will help you choose which lights would look best in what areas of your house. He's a bit expensive, but he's worth it!

We used to live within about a half a mile of Austin's and we had to drive through the parking lot to get to our road, otherwise we would never have noticed it. Once you get inside and see the menu, it's surprising that nobody is eating there. It's almost always close to empty. But they have a good selection/variety on their menu, and the food is good. The one drawback is that there's nothing to make Austin's stand out from other restaurants. The decor is nice but ordinary and the menu doesn't have any specialty items that are unique to Austin's. If you've never been and want a good place to eat where you won't have to wait to get in, give it a try!

We hired Eric at Decorator's Edge to help us decorate our great room and foyer and pick out window treatments for several rooms. He comes to your house, listens to what you have in mind, then goes back to his store and picks out all the stuff, and gives you a price. They don't charge you for selecting products, but the catch is you have to buy everything from their showroom. The good part is, they already have everything in their showroom to decorate with (except major things like furniture with special fabrics and window treatments have to be ordered), so you can have your house decorated quickly. The bad thing is, their showroom is marked up about 300% so you pay way too much for the decorations (in exchange for his advice/services). Also, the window treatments would have been much cheaper if we had ordered them straight from the contractor he hired to hang them. I guess if you're more concerned with saving time and having convenience than you are saving money, it's worth using Decorator's Edge. But if you're someone who knows what you want and how you want your house to look, and have time to go buy the stuff yourself, you would be happier doing it yourself.

If you have land to sell or buy in Banner Elk, Sid Blake at Castle Rock is the man to use. He is a mover and a shaker! He gets things done, and fast. We use him all the time for all our transactions. He is really hyper and knows just how to make deals go through. I doubt there's anyone in the area who moves as much real estate as he does. Seriously, if you have something to sell, or are looking for something to buy, try him and see if he doesn't do a great job for you!

We had several companies give us quotes when we were putting in an alarm system in our new house. Robinson was the best price for what we wanted. My husband described everything just the way he wanted it, and that's just how they installed it. I feel very safe with our alarm system. They keep in touch to make sure everything is working right and if we have problems or want something added, they are very quick to come back out for service calls. I would definitely recommend using this local company.

What used to be just the Banner Elk Cafe has been remodeled and added onto so now there's essentially two restaurants in one. You can sit indoors at either restaurant, or outdoors between the two and order off of either menu. There's a lot of variety and it's really nice to sit outside in Banner Elk in the summer. The drawback is the wait staff always seems overworked and slow. Maybe it's because they're going back and forth between the two different restaurants. It's worth a try though if you haven't been.

My husband got me a gift certificate here for my birthday, so I went for a deep tissue massage, a pedicure, and a spray tan. The massage was very relaxing. The girl who did my pedicure was very friendly and she did a great job. She trims all the dead skin off, massages your legs and feet, rubs lots of oil in, and her nail polish stays on for weeks. She talked me into the spray tan because it was winter time and I was headed for a cruise to the Caribbean. I didn't like the results...it got all over my clothes, and you could hardly tell I had done anything at all. If you go, I would recommend the massage and pedicure from experience, but don't get talked into the spray tan...it's NOT worth the money.

I went to this salon a couple of months ago because they seemed extremely professional and I thought they would be up to date on all the latest styles and products, and I wanted to change my 10 year old hair style and bring it up to date. They are classy...they give you a smock to wear (you hang up your shirt in a closet) and they serve you coffee. And the guy who cut my hair really seemed like he knew what he was doing, but when they were finished styling my hair I looked like I just got out of the lake swimming or something. It was a new hair style for me, and they didn't style it at all, so I didn't know WHAT to do with it when I got home. I was so disappointed that they didn't even charge me for the haircut. (regular haircut is $60). I went back three weeks later for highlights and asked the girl to please show me how to style my hair to make it look good. Once again, I was extremely disappointed with the way she styled it. (All she did was blow it out straight and let it hang down). As far as rating the hair cut and highlights, (highlights cost $105 and took 3 hours) I would say they probably know what they're doing, but as far as styling, my 8 year old niece could have done as good a job. For someone who wants a trendy haircut and knows how to style it yourself, I'd say you'd probably be very happy here, but for those who are chicken and unsure of yourselves, go somewhere else.
