Scottsville Veterinary Adoptions. 5/25/2016

We got two kittens from Scottsville Veterinary Adoptions. Both cats ended up having health issues and both died before their time. We learned shortly after adopting our second cat from there (a year after the first) that their service is horrible and switched vets. One time I remembered a question RIGHT AFTER LEAVING and called right when we got home regarding one of our (then) kittens; I was told that the doctors do not answer phone calls. When I expressed that I was JUST in, and had a question relating to what the vet had just seen, I was told I can make another appointment and bring the cat back.(Even though I had literally just been there for the same issue I was calling about). The staff was unimpressive. It seemed like this place cared more about money. I was unimpressed enough times to switch to another vet, but we did get the feeling after that they had sold us two cats with health issues. With hearing other people's complaints, this adds to my disgust of that place. Hopefully another more caring no-kill shelter will replace this place. more

don't adopt there 6/21/2010

We adopted what appeared to be a healthy puppy on May 21. After about 1-1/2 weeks we were notified that one of her litter mates came down with parvo. Our puppy was scheduled to be spayed on June 4 and since she showed no signs of parvo, they went ahead and did her surgery. Two days later on Sunday morning, the puppy became lethargic and wouldn’t eat. I called Scottsville and was told to bring her in the next day. Later in the day, we decided she was going to make it another day so we brought her into the animal emergency hospital where she was diagnosed with parvo. They admitted her and kept her in quarantine for 4 days. Thankfully, she seems to be doing very well now, but this little puppy has now cost us $2,600. Since our puppy came down with parvo, I found out that at least one other puppy in her litter has parvo as well. Due to the incubation time of parvo, it seems highly likely that these puppies were infected at Scottsville Animal Hospital, either during their stay before getting adopted or while undergoing surgery. Either way, I will never be going back there. more

Wouldn't take any living creature there! 3/8/2007

Adopted a puppy rescued from "Hurricane Katrina" from SVA in March 2006. Went to pick it up, they admit that he is really from an amish farm in Penn Yan, NY. My assumption is that they purchase from puppy mills. Nevertheless, I have veterinary experience. They gave him vaccines at inappropriate ages and ignored proper procedure protocol (protocol that is set by NYS Law). He left the building without being neutered, and I'm sure many other animals do too. Thankfully we are responsible and had it done- how many adopters do NOT have that done and continue to allow animals to breed? Lastly, while they don't kill animals that are not adopted out- They have certainly admitted to several of their customers that they let "unadoptable" cats outside to live. They claim to spay/neuter first. Just like they neutered our puppy before he came home? Right! more

Do NOT go to or adopt from this hospital!! 8/14/2006

After having a successful experience at another local shelter, I was happy to find a sweet cat at Scottsville to adopt. They made one mistake after another and were so incompetent! They adopted out a cat who had a severe heart murmur, severe anemia, and an undiagnosed illness. The cat did not eat or drink for 48 hrs. following his adoption. I took him to my vet who promptly found the problems and said he would most likely die from the illness. There is NO POSSIBLE way that any competent place would not see that he was unhealthy. I do not believe that they even ran the blood work and pre-adoption checks that they said they did. These people do not deserve to be running a shelter. Save yourself heartbreak and do not go here! more

Not the best vet out there. 12/2/2005

We adopted a cat here. While they try to tell you it is cheap, it really isn't. It was expensive. There are cheaper places to get one. Also, I have heard horror stories about the Vet. Everyone says he is mean. I don't know this first hand however. One good thing is that they don't kill any of the animals if they aren't adopted after a certain time. However, if they are full then they just don't accept anymore animals. more
