I can't think of any other place I would rather be than at the Boardwalk when I am in Santa Cruz. You have the atmosphere of an old-time fair with rides, games and food; the sunny beach; seafood restaurants; hotels with views of the ocean; and the wharf with shops, restaurants, and Gelatto ice cream. I wish I was there right now! If you like to skate, rent some skates and skate down the sidewalk that runs the whole length of Santa Cruz's ocean front. Get a view of the boats, lighthouse, sea otters, and surfers along the way. In view at all times, from all of these spots, is the rides on the Boardwalk. Very pretty at night when they light up everything. Be sure to see it from the near-by Wharf at night. The Boardwalk has an old fashioned wooden roller coaster (quite safe), a whole building with bumper cars, and an old fashioned merry-go-round, where you can practice throwing the gold ring into the clown's face. All of these rides sit on a boardwalk right on the beach. A few steps down the stairs and there you are in the sand making a sand castle. Be sure to venture down to the Boardwalk when they have their Clam Chowder Festival, or one of their 50's band concerts.They have a stage in the sand. I use to live in the Santa Cruz mountains and went to the Boardwalk many times over the years and always had fun.

The Red Room tends to be smoky, slippery and more of a meat market- which makes the Red Lounge (above the Red Room) that much more of a surprise and delight. Everything is red, from the detailing along the roof to the heavy red drinking glasses. Plush couches, cozy nooks, low lighting and a first class bartending staff make this the place to go. Besides their excellent drinks (try their Nuts and Berries- creamy wonder) their menu is wonderful with fresh organic produce featured prominently. It's a good place to hang out with friends, share an appeitzer and unwind from the weekend. It definitely gets busy though during the weekends.

My friends and I went to Saturn Cafe not knowing it was a vegetarian restaurant. I'm vegetarian so it was no problem for me, but they were a bit concerned. They really enjoyed their dishes but I have to say that the grilled cheese was tops! They also have the best milkshakes. The atmosphere is fun and casual and prices are reasonable. Definitely check it out if you're in the area!

Do you want to feel like a million bucks? Go and see Glen at La Salon Cruz. Not only is he personable and articulate, he KNOWS his stuff! He gave me a great color touch up that looks perfect ( it takes skill to match someone else's work and Glen did) . He also gave me great trim and showed me how to style my hair differently. We had a great conversation about a plethora of things. I have had my hair done all over the country ( L.A., Santa Barbara, and S.F.) and Glen rocks!!!!!. I was vacationing in Aptos for the week , I live 2 hours away and I will make the drive to let Glen work his magic again. Le Salon Cruz is LUCKY to have him on staff. What an asset. Great ambiance and music in salon too!

The food is really good, bountiful salad bar, hearty soups and great fish! I've had the burgers too, also quite good and HUGE!
Go on Wednesdays when the beer can races are happening - so much fun!
Pros: Fun place with good food and reasonable prices
Cons: It can be crowded!

My wife and I visit the California coast twice a year and everytime we go we have to stop in this awesome book store. The town of Santa Cruz is unique and this independent book store fits in perfectly. They have a good selection of books and intersting things that you won't find at other stores. Last time we were there we bought several neat maps of Paris, London, etc...that I have not been able to find anywhere else. I would recommend stopping by if you are in or near Santa Cruz.

This place is a favorite with me, just because it has so many good memories. Very much a part of Santa Cruz, this place is almost directly on the beach. Downstairs it is a quieter dining experience with table linens, attentive waiters and quiet music. Upstairs it gets a bit more rowdy. :) But in a good way. One of my favorite things to do is gather a group of girlfriends and go there for drinks and appetizers- their nachos are wonderful though, if you like nachos be sure to order your OWN plate. :) Fun place to go.

el palomar serves great mexican food in great ambiance. it is located in downtown santa cruz in an old hotel. the ceilings are high and ornate. there are many tables, but there is still often a wait. you can wait in the bar where you can order drinks and appetizers and watch sporting events on small, high tvs.
