A few months back, my car broke down and was out of commission for a couple of weeks. I was living in suburban Norfolk on the Virginia Beach border and working primarily in downtown Norfolk. I had absolutely NO problems taking the bus, other than once having my bus blow by me without stopping when I was standing right in front of the stop. The buses are fairly clean and the fare is cheap. I also use the Elizabeth River ferry occasionally, which takes you from Norfolk to Portsmouth (or vice versa) for only $1 and is MUCH faster than driving during rush hour. Regular buses quit running in Virginia Beach around 7:45, but if you need to go anywhere within Norfolk and don't have access to a car, taking Hampton Roads Transit public transportation is a great way to get to where you need to go.
