An Oasis 10/27/2005

Amicus Books is indeed an oasis. The customer service is friendly and helpful, the selection is great, and the ambiance is fantastic. It's located upstairs in Hillcrest plaza in a cute little book-loft like store - very adoreable. I would highly recommend Amicus Books to anybody who enjoys reading and or learning - they have something for everybody. more

hard tofind books 10/25/2005

Amicus books can get you just about any book you might be looking for. I was looking for an out of print book that i really wanted and thought i's never be able to find, but somehow one of the employees there found a way to get it for me. It was a little more than I expected to pay, but I was still glad they found the book. I will go back there for any other hard to find books I might be needing. Amicus is a great place if you are an avid book reader. more

A very neat book store! 8/27/2005

Hey everyone! Please go and check out Amicus Books over in the plaza across from Saint Isadore's church. James and Kara are awesome, and the store has quite the variety of books. James and Kara were able to get a book for me in about 6 days that I have been looking for for years. I have really enjoyed my stops in to visit the store and had great conversations with James and Kara, as they are really neat people. So everyone, stop on by! more

Two Heads are Better than One! 7/28/2005

Where do I begin? Let's see first of all, I cannot type enough words to describe what an incredible journey James & Kara have been on since I first met them, after the opening of my business. There curiosity, drive and passion for having there own used bookstore, was simply amazing. Each week or so, they would come in and we would talk about our dreams, our hopes and our wishes for accomplishing in our eyes, the term a successful life. And now J & K are living there dream, as well as I am. Amicus Books, is a VERY special place, filled with lots of wonderful used, out of print books, with a little something for everyone, including myself. The very first time I got to make it over, I found a wonderful old Reader's Digest Gardening Book, that reminded me of my grandmother, when she was alive, and I cherish that book to this day. In fact, you can see it, behind my sales counter, and is a daily reminder of her, and her love of gardening. Maybe that's why I have a green thumb, too. I have to tell you, we have traveled many cities and towns, and while stopping at some of them, we have seen similar places, for instance, Green Apple Books in SF, and The Bookstore in Chico, and Ames Bookstore in Grass Valley, and we are EXTREMELY privileged to have Amicus Books in YC, and should thank James & Kara for going out on a limb and opening there bookstore. I am profoundly thankful and so happy that I got to be a small part of it, by encouraging them to do it. THANKS! J&K!! :-) Please support them, and tell everyone you know about them, cause I certainly am, to anyone I come in contact with who loves books, loves a great place to read & browse, and you will NEVER come across more caring, more kinder, more open-minded people as I have with James & Kara...We are SO very lucky to have them here in Yuba City, and hopefully for many, many, many, many years to come! Its a goldmine of treasured reading, and after reading this message, you need to get in your car and head right over there, RIGHT NOW!! What are you waiting for? Get going!! Oh, by the way guys, also thank you for adding us for a review, that was very sweet of you both!! And thanks for letting your customers know about us too!! I just get Warm Fuzzies thinking about these two people...You will get that same feeling once you have met them...They will definitely make you feel right at home!! See you guys, one of these days!! more

Well on its way to perfection 7/23/2005

While in Yuba City visiting relatives for a few days, we came across the sign for a used bookstore. As a family of book lovers, we were intrigued by the thought of such an establishment in Yuba City, which does not traditionally support such an enterprise. As we entered, we were delighted to find a welcoming, clean, warm, and beautifully detailed little shop that held a great many treasures in its collection. We were able to leisurely look through the volumes as music played in the background and found several items we had to bring back home to Maryland. The owners, James and Kara Davis, are knowledgeable and sincerely interested in serving as a well-needed literary resource. If all goes well, they will continue toward their vision of success, expanding their offerings and impact in their community. Visit this little shop soon and become fast fans as we did - we look forward to dropping by the next time we are in the neighborhood. more

Amicus books 7/17/2005

Awesome, unique used bookstore. Had books in there that were relevant for today and that I remember reading 20 years ago. Great selection/variety at very low prices. The owners are really special to get to know. They are extremely kind and genuine. They make you feel like you are part of their family. Tenacious in helping you find any used or out of print book you are looking for. Great atmosphere, soft music. Decorated well with sitting chairs to relax and read. I am thrilled we have such a place to go to in Yuba City. more

A Nice Addition for Yuba, City 7/15/2005

I have been waiting for a good quality used bookstore to open up in Yuba City. If the chain bookstores don't have what you are looking for, try Amicus. The people there are friendly and the selection of books is diverse. It is a great place to browse for interesting books that you will never find at the mall. Highly recommended! more

Serene 7/13/2005

Each time I ascend the stairs of the loft above Ruthy's, I smile when I reach the squeaky step. The sound evokes images of old, heavy doors, wooden ships, and the opening of treasured trunks. The stairway turns and I find myself stepping through the doorway and into this serene little shop. The atmosphere almost seems to change and I am immediately aware that I have entered a place where books are loved. Adored. Revered. I notice that there is not a bit of dust or moldy old book aroma, simply the best of books, old and recent, and the friendliest of shop owners. James and Kara seem to sense when I feel like visiting and when I prefer to disappear into the pages. I am still amazed at how helpful they were when I needed an obscure, out of print title. They chased it down and it was waiting for me the next week. Amicus takes on an almost magical quality of never being the same twice and there is always something displayed that seems to have been waiting just for me. Delightful. more

Treasured bookstore 7/3/2005

My husband is an avid book reader, and because of that I have been following him into many bookstores over the years. I have never seen a bookstore that even begins to resemble the lovely home of Amicus Books. Amicus is a serene and organized environment. There are corners to sit down and relax, and many wonderful topics to find knowledge and adventure. The owners of Amicus, James and Kara have a genuine quality that is caring and respectful to each person that enters. Amicus is a treasure for our community, and a great place for all of us to visit, young and old. Sincerely, (Treasure Found) Michele more

Hooray for Yuba City! 7/1/2005

I loved this bookstore! I was very surprised to see such a diverse holding of books. It was great to hear they are willing to listen to what all community members want or need in a bookstore. It is sincerely appreciated. more

Good Books, Great People 7/1/2005

(Not insinuating that the books are in any way substandard, or lesser than the people who frequent the store, but it just sounds nice if I say good then great.) Anyway, i was surprised by its existence at all, and nearly went into a tizzy trying to comprehend how it isn't known all over the area yet! But it will be, if the wonderful owners have anything to say about it. They offer a poetry reading/discussion group for young adults every Sunday, something rare in the Yuba/Sutter area, and exhibit care for the community as a whole, something you won't find at a Border's. Their book selection is superb, with a smattering of just about anything. Sci-fi, psychology, home and garden, new age-- all of it's there, and they don't have a single trashy book-- they pride themselves on it. more

Amicus Books is amazing... 7/1/2005

Amicus Books is amazing... quiet, peaceful and filled with unique books that will lift your spirits. I found a book that I didn't know was still in existence. Please visit Amicus Books so you can see for yourself how wonderful James, Kara and their bookstore really is.... more

WOW! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! 6/29/2005

Yes, Amicus Books is the best used bookstore that has ever been in Yuba City. I mean, this isn't your pulp fiction romance novel type of crap - this is an actual bookstore with books that have words worth reading. Science, Biography, History, Religion, Philosophy, Poetry, Psychology, Self Help, Metaphysical; they have something of everything. AND AND AND, its all very well categorized, clean, and in a very aesthetic environment - WoW! Right here in Yuba City! Give them your support, it would be totally worth having them around for a long long time. more

A Yuba City Oasis 6/28/2005

My husband and I thought we'd check out the new local bookstore and to our surprise found a little oasis. The owners are friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and extremely committed to their customers. The selection is mostly used non fiction and there are a lot of subjects to choose from. The atmosphere is very relaxing and peaceful. It's a refreshing getaway from corporate owned venues! Their hours are wonderful for those of us that work late. You can sit around after dinner and think, hey, let's go to the bookstore and they'll still be open. Go visit with James and Kara. You'll be glad you did! more

A Hidden Treasure 6/28/2005

After a bookclub meeting at Ruthy's Restaurant, I had the pleasure of discovering a new find - Amicus Books. Nestled upstairs in Hillcrest Plaza, it is an inviting bookstore filled with new and used books. The owners are friendly and knowledgable, and the atmosphere is warm and condusive to perusing the shelves - to find just the perfect purchase. Poetry is read on Friday evenings according to the owners. Try it, and see for yourself! more

LOVE this bookstore 6/28/2005

Amicus Books is what bookstores should be. It is upstairs, "through the iron gate" in the Hillcrest Plaza. It is cozy without being crowded, and the owners are extremely friendly without being fake. They have a wide variety of books, on almost any topic, and are more than happy to order anything they don't have. I HIGHLY recommend this bookstore to anyone who loves books. more

Simple & Elegant 6/27/2005

Amicus Books is a small, elegant book loft tucked away in the beautiful Yuba-Sutter Area of Northern California. Nestled in the shadow of the World's smallest mountain range - The Sutter Buttes - it has a lot to measure up to. However, it has a fantastic start. It is located in the Hillcrest Plaza-one of Yuba City's oldest and treasured shopping centers-just two blocks south of Franklin on Clark Ave; and has an awesome local and regional group of supporters. Great Hours! Tuesday -Saturday 10:30-7:30pm and Sundays until 3:00 The selection is wonderful, a little bit of everything but specializing in Non-Fiction subjects as well as out of print, collectible and rare books. In addition, we can order almost anything. Committed to the community, several projects have been launched including raising funds for local services and conducting various workshops such as the Green Chair Poetry readings.
