Tucked away in the streets of Kailua, Boots and Kimo's is one of those "hole in the wall" restaurants with lines out the door everyday. They have really built a reputation for themselves over the years and have became a local favorite and a tourisy must go spot.
They are well known for there secret Macademia Nut pancakes which is so delicious and the pancake just melts in your mouth. Their omelettes are also filled with cheese and just nothing you can cook at home.
I have to say that the food is a little pricey but occasional trips down won't hurt the pocketbook.

My husband found this in one of the must go to books. We love the macadamia nut and banana pancakes and the macadamia nut sauce!!!!!!!!! It is to die for. People are missing the point if they don't order them. We hope to be back this summer for another visit to both Hawaii and Boots & Kimo's!!!!!!!

Buzz's is right across the street form Kailua Beach Park, which makes it the perfect spot for happy hour. The perfect beach day ends on the deck at Buzz's with fresh sashimi and a "BFRD" - big effing rum drink" - which is their mai tai. It's amazing, but strong! Then, you have to stick around to have dinner - order the fresh fish "Chinese Style", it's poached, with sesame oil, soy sauce, and somethin' else. Hit's the spot. I MISS IT!!!
Pros: Fresh Fish/ Great Drinks/ Best Staff
Cons: must wear shoes. :)

Our first time in HI was2003, we made our first stop pinky's pupu bar and grill and then visited four more times in that week stay. It was great and the drinks are second only to the food and great staff. We are planning a return trip in 2009 and after the plane lands it will be straight to pinky's for our first meal and island drinks. Great prices and lots of food to chose from..make sure to try the 18oz MAI Tai's they are out of this world. MMMMM yummy!

Baci Bistro is a popular eating and meeting spot in Kailua. I'm not sure if we met the owner but a man who looked like he ran the restaurant was very personable and friendly when we came up to put our names on the waitlist. Inside the restaurant there's a constant energy as patrons carry their personal conversations over delicious plates. I ordered the lobster-filled ravioli -- a different but tasty dish. Overall an enjoyable eating experience.

Assaggio is a nice non-chain restaurant located in the Ala Moana Shopping center. The food is traditional Italian and you can get full or half servings for ANY meal on the menu. It's a nice option for people who aren't starving. Plus they're reasonably priced.

One of the greatest things is being able to get a yummie burger after a long exhausting day at the beach. Every so often we drive from Mililani to Kailua just for a Teddy Burger. There isn't enough room inside this place, but you can get your burgers and pineapple shakes to-go. Cool you off and satisfy every craving.
If you have never had a Teddy Burger, go to Kailua first. Then next time you are exhausted from playing down in Waikiki go ahead and walk over to Teddy Burger (across from Zoo & Waikiki Beach).

As a "bookophile," I consider Bookends a place I could spend hours and really lose myself in. Unlike the big-name retail book/music stores with cafes, Bookends carries both new and used titles and has that familiar neighborhood feel to it. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and will certainly go out of their way to help you.
Because there are a mix of books here, you can peruse dog-eared copies and never-before-owned books all on the same shelf. Books can also be found in stacks on the floor and on tables throughout the store. Organization is not the greatest (however most books are categorized) but the fun part is sifting through the titles and discovering works you'd never heard of before. Bookends offers mainstream to offbeat and everything in between.

I lived in Northern Italy for years and am very picky... the food here is amazing, and the closest to Northern Italian Cuisine that I've found in the states. I'm from Kailua, but live in Portland now. Baci is a restaurant that I miss on a daily basis. Try Chef Reza's grilled shrimp with goat cheese/ mint & lime. Normally Italians wouldn't recommend cheese with seafood, but this is a must!
Pros: Amazing food...
Cons: none

I went there on a Saturday afternoon when I hurt my back. I didn't see Dr. Braun, but another young ER doctor. He was great, as was the staff. Quick-professional-courteous. I see some other folks complain about having to produce an insurance card. Not sure why -- this isn't an emergency room and is not obligated to give away things for free. I'd be curious if these people who complain about not getting seen without paying work for free in there own lives.
