Editorial review from Citysearch 8/18/2013

I used to go to the Tokyo Lobby in San Gabriel. I was hoping this experience would be just as good. I was extremely disappointed. The quality of the food, such as sushi, and the teriyaki chicken was very poor. The waitresses are also not as friendly. I will not be going back. They should have closed this location and kept the San Gabriel one open. I just found out it is not the same owners anymore.....makes sense now. more

Reasonable prices, but not enough food to satisfy you 3/9/2009

First off I had No idea that Tokyo Lobby was owned by Koreans. Its kinda funny when you think about it. Ha Ha Ha. Shouldn't they be serving Korean food? Anyway I have to admit their service isn't all that great, but their shrimp tempura rolls are quite yummie, and their terriyaki is so so, not the best I've ever had but edable. I hate that they don't give a salad with your meal and even though it's really not a traditional japanese soup, I would much rather have eggflower soup then their miso soup. more

Decent, typical Japanese food 5/30/2008

It's not the best Japanese food (apparently the owners are Korean?), but it's not bad. Very typical fare - teriyaki, sushi, edamame, miso soup, etc. The prices are reasonable and the Asian-style decor is cute. There are also two plasma screen TVs which usually play popular sporting events. They are very accommodating of large parties and special occasions. Pros: Decor, prices more

Tokyo Lobby has been purchased by Koreans 9/29/2007

First of all, Tokyo Lobby has been purchased by Korean owners. They still use the Tokyo Lobby name, but the menu and food no longer ia authentic Japanese. I was a loyal patron of this restaurant, but since the new owners bought the place, the food is junk and I no longer go there. What a shame! Tokyo Lobby was one of the few Japanese restaurants serving authentic Japanese food. Pros: NONE! Go for Lunch 6/26/2007

We went on Monday 6/25 and got right in. I had the lunch special $6.09 for chicken teriyaki, vegatable tempura, sukiyaki, and a two piece california roll along with the usual salad and miso soup. It was good and you cant beat the price for lunch. My friends had the chirashi and fried chicken. No complaints here. I would go back. Total bill for three was $35 including tip and green tea ice cream! more

inexpensive but ""okay"" quality 4/9/2007

I would come to Tokyo Lobby a lot during my high school years when I couldn't afford ""real"" Japanese food- not be an elitist or anything. I wouldn't mind going there nowadays... their waiters and waitresses are extremely friendly and their food is pretty inexpensive. I like their rolls, but I wouldn't recommend their spicy tuna roll though... it comes out really tiny and not very flavorful. Also, I don't enjoy their beef teriyaki. It tastes a bit strange... their chicken is good though! Also, there are only open during meal time hours, like most Japanese places. Pros: inexpensive, decent rolls Cons: spicy tuna and beef teriyaki more

Memories of Childhood 7/19/2006

Yes, I know, I know. The quality has gone down, and I frequent the Hacienda Heights location more than the San Gabriel location because it is much cleaner and has higher quality food. DON'T order regular beef teriyaki, chicken teriyaki, or cha siu. If you want good food, order the black cod, sukiyaki, nabe, tempura, sesame chicken, or specialty beef tempura (filet or NY). The San Gabriel place used to be Asian Al's in the '80s. You always had friends there every time you went in. Now, most people will drive to Hacienda Heights. more

Nice choice 4/4/2006

Although, this place is not a ""great first date"" choice it is a lovely place to have a meal. The service has always been friendly and quick. I always have ordered the C Special. Teriyaki Chicken and Rice. The entree comes with a side of cabbage and miso soup. My boyfriend and I simple LOVE the freshwater eel (I can't think of the appropriate name at this time) we usually have 2 each. It's so fresh and appealing. The price is fair and yes the wait can be awhile, but no reservations are allowed unless you have a party of 8 or so. Pros: Service, Food, Location more

Good if you go for Lunch 9/11/2005

I went to Tokyo Lobby twice. One time was for lunch and the other was for dinner. The lunch was ok cuz they do have great price for it and for some reason I think the lunch food was better than the dinner one. For dinner...I will not recommonded for this place cuz it does not worth the price to go. I ordered the sushi boat and the Teriyaki was over cooked, the sauce was too sweet, and the sushi was just alright. more

So-So restaurant 9/5/2005

I did not find this place to be that great. I went on a Saturday night...the food was average (note I had an Udon bowl w/o sushi so I can't comment on the sushi/sashimi), the restaurant was REALLY loud, and because it was so crowded and a lot of people were waiting we got the check within 5 minutes of getting the entree! MAKE RESERVATIONS or wait a long time!!! I have to disagree with the first review, this place is NOT ROMANTIC. I went there on a first date and found that we had to raise our voices over the crowd. There is no separate area for smalller, quieter groups. If you want a place to eat with friends or family away from the chain restaurants this place is okay. If you want to have a nice night with a date or significant other don't go here. Pros: reservations Cons: crowded more

Quantity, not Quality 8/15/2005

We've tried this restaurant several times in the past but it's been over 7 yrs since the last visit. The food is still very average even if they give you large portions for the combo plates. My sashimi was chewy and rubbery. The tempura was crunchy but not light. I liked my friend's fried oyster. They are always busy, even on a weekday. Don't expect the best service. Since we only dine here intermittently while visiting in the area, the food is tolerable. The menu is daunting, pages and pages of a poorly put together scrapbook. Someone needs to rework that book. Pros: large portions, parking Cons: average food, slow service more
