Editorial review from Citysearch 11/7/2012

This place is utter waste, not worth my money & time. Like the other Customer mentioned the owner lady of this restaurant is the rudest I've ever seen, she acts as if we Indians are eating their for free, she has no class. The food was tasteless so we were not able to finish what we took from the buffet and the owner kept looking at our plates and eventually came over and mentioned that we are wasting their food. Absolutely ridiculous, please do a favor for yourself and don't ever visit this shoddy place, they will treat you like trash. If you are craving for good vegetarian food check out the original Udipi restaurant (different owner) located in Hilcroft/Katy, you will not regret your decision. more

Very poor service 3/20/2012

the food is not exceptional. its just ok. very few options for a buffet service. it was cold, although the lighters are lit up to warm up the food. the owner was not courteous to the kids attending the party, she took the liberty to discipline them, make them eat the food that was actually not nice. She also made comments about food that was left over on our table. agreed that you shouldn't waste food but what do you do when it doesn't taste good? not something i would recommend. this is bringing a very bad name for the other udipi restaurants around town. more

Great place for baby shower 11/25/2010

We had our baby shower at Udipi. The staff went out of the way to ensure that the place was well decorated (pink for our baby girl) and had a custom menu fit which included vegetarian and jain selections. The team was very attentive as we requested food to be brought out - and were very flexible and easy going about the whole process. more

Great variety, delicious cuisine 11/8/2010

Warm and friendly atmosphere and great food. Smiles greeted us along with the heavenly aroma of Indian food lovingly prepared by people who care about quality. We were made welcome, all questions answered in a helpful way. The selections we chose were the Tomato Rice and its name does not do justice to this lovely tasty dish. Also had a North Indian curry and one of the house specialties with lentils. Highly recommended! more

Even enjoyable for carnivores! 11/5/2010

The second I walked in, the aroma of the food told me I was in for a treat. As a carnivore, my skepticism over vegetarian food being good enough to replace meat was quickly dashed. We had a large event in the banquet room. The buffet, from the appetizers to the entrees, was flavorful and satisfying. I now know I can get great food without having to rip into animal flesh! :D more

Horrible food greedy owner 7/30/2010

This is not the same udipi cafe that existed last year by Mr Satish. The food is horrible hardly edible, and buffet is terrible. it is a big letdown. Boycott this restaurant or stand to lose 10$ for a buffet and then get acidity more

Great food and service! 3/2/2010

First off, full disclosure - I have a close family relationship with the owners. That being said, every time we visit here (at least once a week), the food is fantastic. And guess what? When we put in the order, the kitchen usually doesn't know it's for us as ""VIP"" to the owners. They think it's a normal order. The dishes come out great anyway! Most recently we had the mattar paneer which was delicious. Not greasy at all, right level of cream, very soft paneer. My favorite being South Indian myself is the masala rava dosa. Super crispy every time...it does take a little bit longer to make than most menu items but well worth the wait. Pros: Fantastic Rava Dosa more

NOT THE REALL UDIPI. BAD FOOD 1/2/2010

I went to the newly opened Udipi Cafe in sugarland not far from the old one adress 3551 instead or 3559. Anyways I think the food wasnt that great and i wasn't pleased with the service and the waiter dose not speak english very well at all, and the food DOSE NOT TASTE LIKE THE REAL UDIPI ( considering i've been to every single location) at every other location the food is excellent but for some reason the food at Sugarland udipi isnt good. When I complained to the waiter regarding the food i asked "" Are the cooks the same ?!"" and he said that the management has been changed and that the owner of all the REAL Udipi's has sold the Location in Sugarland to some one else. The over all Service and Food was not like the old udipi I'm Sorry to say i would not recommend this place to anyone!. I will instead go to the Udipi Cafe in Hillcroft wich is a few miles away and the same old Udipi food and GREAT SERVICE and GOOD FOOD.! Cons: The Food is not South or North Indian and the food isnt good more

Worst food. Greedy Owner. Poor Customer Service 1/1/2010

Buffet was very bad. Nothing is in order. Heavilly salted chutney made us sick for 3 days (Realy very terrible..) Please reconsider if you are planning to visit here. Pros: Nothing to mention Cons: Over priced. Bad taste. Not worth in any ways more

Bad Food. Over Priced 11/27/2009

Recently we dined at the new location at Katy. Food was terrible. Tasted like warmed up frozen dishes bought from web. None of the dishes (including) dosa was worth for the $9.99 paid. Pros: May be Service! Cons: Very poor quality and Expensive more

Big Let Down ! Overrated 8/15/2009

Visited Udipi Cafe based on the reviews. Either it was one of those exception days - or with passage of time, the quality has come down. Pros: Veggie Fare Cons: Not too clean, poor service, poor food quality more

Pest Problems 5/29/2008

Yesterday, my girlfriend and I were greeted cheerfully by the server. As we were sitting in the booth on the right wall, we both noticed a ""small, brown, oval, flat-bodied insect common in areas of poor cleanliness"" scurrying across the floor under our table. We stayed a little while to wait until the server came by again to inform him of the pest problem. For some reason, knowing the restaurant had pest problems, we tried what I've assumed to be bhakri. I pick up the second round chip and saw an ant, which my girlfriend swears was fried with the chip. I then decided to tell our server, but told the chef instead. For some reason, he was out of the kitchen when I approached him. After telling him about the pest problem, he told me that his restaurant, just a day before, passed the inspection. Having the chef lie about the problem made it easier for us to leave. I'm not reviewing the food, since I wasn't there long enough. From my experience yesterday, I would discourage you from this restaurant unless you prefer sharing your dish with the ants and ""small, brown, oval, flat-bodied insects common in areas of poor cleanliness."" Pros: Service was good Cons: Pest problem ruining dining experience more

Chameleon Consistency 3/23/2007

This is a good place for anyone who wants a good spread of vegetarian South Indian food on the menu. It is not a good place for anyone who wants great tasting vegetarian South Indian food. If the cuisine is a novelty to you, then by all means go. On the other hand, if you know how the stuff?s supposed to taste, then you have an even chance of being dissatisfied. The same dish tastes good on some days and awful on others. Pros: A long menu. Cons: Bored chef(s) turning out boring food. more

Great food 2/16/2003

I adore indian food, and this is one of my favorite places in town. They give large portions for a low price, and the food is delicious. Even die-hard meat lovers seem to like their exclusively vegitarian menu. It's definatley worth a trip there. The waitors don't speak much english, but they are very nice, and they somehow always manage to get the orders right. Everything I have tried on the menu is good...I don't really think you can go wrong. Their mango chutney is to die for. It is a perfect accompanyment to everything on the menu. Pros: Inexpensive, Authenic cuisine, Good service more

A Little Better than Madras 10/30/2002

I am a long-time MP fan, but I prefer this place. I especially like the Chinese-style cauliflower. The ambience and service are slightly better than MP. Don't get me wrong - I love both... Pros: Great Food Cons: No meat more

Best Place to Eat Dosa & Thali 5/28/2002

Waw, the food just tasted so great here, much better than madras. I really loved the food here. You should try this place too, it's fun to go with friends and family as they have huge place to enjoy! more

MONTROSE INDIAN 5/27/2002

Very good South Indian Vegetarian. Much better/friendlier service than Madras Pav. Best coconut chutney and Medu Vada in Houston. Lunch buffet prices are steep, and the Sambar is usually watery. more

  • In Short
Udupi features cuisine of south India where sustainable benefits are reaped from the earth, not animals. Expect a brisk business of many local Indian families and natural non-carnivore types. It takes culinary ingenuity to come up with more than 40 interesting choices using no meat and scarce dairy, but Udupi manages quite well. Try the uthappam, a massive savory potato pancake stuffed with buttery onions, peas, fresh mint and shredded carrots.
