Excellent and original! 3/4/2009

I read another review stating that tsunami was expensive and unimpressive. Good is never a word that I would use to describe tsunami, it's incredible. I've been a regiular customer there for quite some time now. The point of tsunami is not to be described as trying to be elegant. So many restaurants are intimidating to so many customers. People want an environment where they can not only be comfortable but also have outstanding original dishes. Regarding the prices, Tsunami's seafood is flown in fresh almost everyday and I can guarantee that's not the case at the other 'good' restaurant this frustrated customer spoke of. Also as a regular there, I can vouch that no customers have juststood around 10 min before being noticed. Servers, hosts, any employee always adresses a customer and either seats them or tells them someone will be right with them. I've been there enough to witness high volume nights. The only way a member of the staff may be 'chatting' in the kitchen is if the kitchen is closed and it's after 10 pm and it's no longer necessary for the host to be on duty. I've seen many of customers come in after the kitchen has closed and not understand why they can't get dinner. This sounds like an inconsiderate person who has no conception of the fact that servers are not servants. Tsunami has excellent choices and a small plate menu that changes nightly to add constant diversity. The small plate menu also provides a smaller still generous portion size and prices around $14. It's a wonderful reasonable option for anyone that's looking for breakout and inovative cuisine. Tsunami is what it is after 10 years thanks to an incredible staff and an always impressive experience. I love it! more

Tongue Tantilizing 5/11/2008

Just what I have been looking for. Great food, friendly and professional staff. The interior is artsy and relaxed. My husband and I had a wonderful anniversary dinner there. We had the Mezze appetizer, scallops and basmati rice-delish, beef fillet with sides and we really went overboard with dessert. The bread pudding beignet with chocolate dipping sauce was slap-your-sister-satisfying. The chef even came out to greet us which was a plus. I highly recommend for those who are looking for something different and taste challenging. more

Good Food at a high price 8/12/2007

The food at Tsunami is very good. However, there are alot of restaurants in Memphis with good food. I thought that the prices were way too high for the items listed on the menu. Four scallops and a small ( I mean small) amount of rice cost 22.00. The scallops were very good and well presented. My friend got the tuna. It was also very good and presented well. The atmosphere at Tsunami did not wow me either. The hostess took a good 10 minutes to realize we were even there. She was in the kitchen chatting. We had to flag a busy waiter down to finally go get her. The tables were small and close together. The restaurant gave off more of a cafe vibe than an elegant restaurant. This restaurant is also very loud. My friend and I had to try to talk over people several tables away. Waitstaff was also unimpressive. Too many nicer restaurants on Cooper Young for the money. Pros: Food was very good Cons: Price, Service and Ambience more

Incredible Sushi 6/1/2004

I was surprised to see a woman -- and an African American woman at that -- behind the sushi bar. But can that woman make sushi or WHAT? This was some of the best sushi I've eaten -- and I've eaten at some of the top sushi bars in NYC, LA and SF. Great decor, too! Would love to go back! Pros: food, fish, fun more

Great Food Experience! 4/6/2004

This was one of our best meals ever. The food was flavorful and good for you. The restaurant offers smaller portions at reasonable prices, so it leaves plenty of room for dessert! We started off with the Sesame Chilled Noodles and Spinach with Goat Cheese Salad. For our entrees we had a perfectly seared Ahi Tuna that was lightly coated with just enough of a pepper spice mixture along with an accompaniment of wasabi infused cucumber salad, and a grilled Ono with a delicious spiced coconut sauce. For dessert we had one of the best and original desserts we've ever tasted, the Mojito Soaked Rum Cake with Lemongrass ice cream. It tastes just like the name of the dessert. We will definitely dine here again. Pros: Outstanding Food, Great Service, Great atmosphere more
