Ridiculous 6/4/2011

We drove from an hour away to see someone in the hospital. My wife and I had been talking about getting some japanese food, but we did not want to go to the larger restaurants where they cook in front of you.\r \r We saw Tokyo which looked great from the outside and the parking lot was full so we went in. On a Friday night there was no one in the place. The decorations were pictures of their food hanging EVERYWHERE! There were also LARGE mirrors all around and I could see the guy watching us from different angles. \r \r They told us the food was ""tempura"" not ""hibachi"" and we ordered anyway. I knew it was over priced, but we thought we would try it. The salad had a sauce that tasted like peanut butter (almost unedible), the miso soup tasted like sweat (was undrinkable), and when the food came it had no taste and the plate was skimpy. \r \r No one was in the place, so I went to talk to the manger. All I said was, ""I'm sorry, but we don't like our meals."" He says, ""We said tempura not hibachi."" Long story short, he told me two or three times ""No Complaining."" So, we gave them $30 cash and left the food sitting there after eating literally five bites.\r \r It is no wonder they have no customers on a Friday night... more

Excellent Idako 8/1/2010

This is one of my favorite restaraunts and is a great place to grab a quick sushi lunch. One of the only places around that serves Idako (baby octopus salad) at all, and it is the best of those that I've tried.\r \r They have all the best ""standard"" sushi choices, but the chef will make you something special if you ask him nicely. The staff is all very friendly and will do their best to ensure that you have a great experience. \r \r The sushi classes are top notch and the sake tastings are a fun conversation starter for business luncheons or casual get-togethers. Pros: Fresh sushi, great seasoning, friendly staff Cons: A little expensive more

awful service 5/6/2009

im from alabama ,went to virgina to visit my friends before yesterday, at lunch time, i was really hungrey,i looked on my GPS trying to find a japanese restaurant around downtown, there was only 3 japanese restaurant was shown, i went to the other two but they closed cauz they only open for dinner, until i find tokyo, i was excited..and glad.\r i ordered lunch box beef teriyaki with sashimi and my bf ordered udon, he was taking a picture of the lunch box i ordered, because it was so less beef in there, and look different then the one i saw on the picture menu. then the owner came to us and took the menu i had and said: where u all from ? i thought he was just wondering cauz we are asian too, my bf told him we are from alabama, and then he said: i dont care, this is a restaurant. i didnt understand at the begining, my bf told me he is not happy cauz i took the picture, and then i called the server a korean lady, she was rude, she come to me and said: what?what do u want? i said : why the food look lot less then the picture menu i saw? she was said : because the beef is different.. then i asked her, well why it didnt say so on the picture menu that the meat is different? and then she called the owner and he came to me and shout at me: this is the way it is here ok..im the owner and nobody said anything about this before. i was really mad, i said, im a customer here, there is no reason for u to talk with me like this, u should listen to my opinion. and then he said : i dont care, just get up and leave, go go go! i was arguing with him and trying to let him apologize to me, but he drag my wrist and trying to pull me out, and still saying: just get out of my restaurant..\r i admitt the soup and salad was good(that was the only thing i ate) and the restaurant look really pretty, but i had the worthest expirence since i came to the US...\r no wander why there was no business at 12:00 lunch time, cauz thats how they treat their customer ,just because my bf took a picture of their lunch box which already has on the lunch menu, i still cant understand why he cant take a picture of the food!\r but i suggest u who go to roanoke or live there, if u want good service, u better dont go there, if u dont want them to treat u like me, my wrist still purple, if i wasnt my bf tell me to let it go, i would of call the police and acuse him intentional injury\r if u are a usual customer there, and u dont believe me, thats ok, why dont u go and ask the owner if this really happend! he probably going to find a excuse say something like: they was trying to steal our menu or something like that, i think he is afraid that im going to open a japanese restaurant next door~~ if im from there, i will open one just to make him feel sorry for what he did to me.. more

Excellent Waitstaff and Friendly Chef 12/19/2006

Took our son here as he was being shipped out to serve in Okinawa the next day, and experienced excellent, tasty food nicely served, helpful waitstaff, and a Chef that whiped up a special dish. It made for a special evening for all. Nice memory. Found this site on the web and was pleasantly surprised to find a quality Japanese restaurant in Roanoke having driven down from the D.C. area that night. more

Great sushi, artfully prepared 11/18/2006

Everything is tasty here. Good miso soup. Nice house salad with ginger dressing. Hot green tea. Smooth and fruity sake. The ""green dragon roll"" - fried shrimp roll with avocado slices on top - was excellent. The chef arranged it on the plate to look like a dragon in motion, with a piece of fried shrimp tail sticking out the back. I also tried the maguro (tuna) nigiri. It had that ultra-tender texture of great sushi. The service was excellent, the atmosphere warm and cozy. Try it, sushi lovers. Pros: Great food, excellent service Cons: A little pricey more

Decent sushi 8/1/2006

Tokyo is a decent sushi bar/restaurant that is family owned. The sushi is standard with little flair- not the best eaten. The nigiri pieces are small and a little expensive for the value. The sushi chef doesn't inspire with much creativity, just doles out the standard sushi. They close early too so get their early if you want to eat...even on weekends. Pros: Good service, family owned Cons: Very little creativity, small pieces, close early more
