Editorial review from Citysearch 9/4/2012

Ate there on 8/24. Although we have eated there before this visit was horrible. Becky gave us the worst service ever. My seafood platter was cold, tasted very old & 2 pieces of fish had a fowl taste. When Becky came to clear our plates (which was the only time she had come back to the table) she noticed my uneaten meal & ask if I wanted a box. When I said No, that I didn't like it, I got a shoulder shrug. This place has really gone down hill recently. more

normally this place is awesome, but.... 9/30/2011

I have eaten here MANY MANY times and have always been happy with my food (even if it is pricey). The last time I went was a Sunday after church and the waitress (Jill?) was completely snobby & rude. On top of that, my boyfriends $5 glass of orange juice was hot and when they brought my hamburger, the lettuce was wilted and tasted disgusting. more

get there early ! 6/27/2011

always a wait at the monument, when they moved downtown georgetown it put 3 other places out of buisness. Food is fresh all the time, staff is always running around in what is a controlled chaos to an untrained eye. Love the burgers, wish they still did kobe beef. I must have been the only one ordering it because they dropped it from the menu. I think the ""open market"" they have is a bad idea and really gives a black eye to a great establishment for going over board. I do not want to buy tomatoes and celery from a huge square box off the side of a great diner. Can't believe the council agreed to it. more

Really Good Diner 4/29/2009

I went to breakfast at the Monument Cafe for the first time a few months ago. There was a little bit of a wait but it was worth it. The food was very fresh. I especially liked the pepper bacon. You can't go wrong with pepper bacon! I decided to stop by there for dinner and was impressed with that as well. The chicken fried chicken is very good. The waitress told me that the chicken fried steak was really good, too. I decided to order it on my next visit. I wasn't as impressed with this selection. But maybe chicken fried steak isn't my thing. Also--you need to know the ""trick"" for getting the scrumptious bread. They frequently run out so if they don't bring you any--just ask for it. They will give you some as soon as the next batch is ready. And be sure to check their website for the daily special and desserts. As far as all the people complaining about the management, it's really been a non-issue for me since I haven't really had any reason to interact with them. Our servers have all been pleasant and attentive. And--on any given shift--I've counted upwards of 20 employees workin' hard to take care of the customers. *This next part has nothing to do with the food or service* The new location is really nice. I just wish they would do something with the interior. It's stark white. No color. I think it would be nice if they painted the place or added some decor. Nothing crazy--maybe just a light green for the walls or...something! It's a little too visually sterile looking for my taste. But the food makes up for the lack of atmosphere so you owe it to yourself to stop by the next time you're in Georgetown. Pros: Fresh Food more

simply the best 4/11/2009

this is the real deal - a cafe that actually makes all its own food and uses mainly local suppliers - it is a community place and very family friendly Pros: real food more

Agree Bad Management, Overworked Waitstaff 1/16/2009

I have to agree with the comment about the managers and overworked waitstaff. been going for years and loved it but in the past couple of years with the change of management, not so much, We love the food and the owners but when the general manager david was hired, i really dont think it was for the best. Now on top of it all, you now have Jeanette who was a waitress, who we avoided at all cost, always insisting on sitting on the other side of the room where she was stationed. Between the two of them yelling most of the time, its too much, cant enjoy ourselves and the feeling of once being a part of the monument family Pros: great food, great waitstaff in the past Cons: bad management decisions (who was hired more

Fantastic Fare and Fun Atmosphere 12/21/2008

The new site for this famed old Georgetown favorite is roomy and family-inviting! It's farther north on the same S. Austin Ave., but easy access for anyone in neighboring towns, including Austin proper. The waitstaff make you feel like you're part of the family, which fits the dining atmosphere and gets your taste buds ready for the treats that follow. The special for the night, the chicken quesadillas, were just right, with just enough zing for a Southwestern taste. Try the rice and two other sides of your choice. Two parties at our table had a superb club sandwich dinner, and a young diner gave us his teenage thumbs up on the bacon cheeseburger. The shrimp were huge and juicy, for my 81-year old mother, along with the sweet potatoes, zucchini, and squash, downed by a combination of people from the table, such that none were left. Two of us had the old favorite, chicken fried steak, and neither of our dinners were left standing. My broccoli was cut perfectly and blended well with the main course, and the mashed potatoes not only tasted superb, but were just the right amount for the dinner, not over-filling. One side order deserves special mention, and that is the carefully chosen combination fruit salad that leaves a taste you want to take home with you. Give the new site a try, go with fun and great taste in mind, and you won't leave disappointed! Pros: Food, service, family atmosphere Cons: Parking a bit inconvenient if crowded, and family-level noise if you're looking for a quiet getaway more

noise factor 12/4/2008

We have been regulars at the Monument since it opened and have always enjoyed the good food and service. However, while the food is still good the quiet diner atmosphere is, sadly, no more. The ""new"" Monument has the kitchen and even the dish washing area open to the dining room. Really, what were they thinking? Our recent visit was horrible. The constant clanging of silverware and the banging of dishes made so much noise that everyone had to shout above the din to be heard, which added to the overall noise factor. We finally gave up trying to carry on a conversation, ate our food, and left disappointed. We regularly bring clients and out of town guests to the Monument, but no more. Too bad, it was a decent place. Pros: good food Cons: kitchen noise more

Great servers, poor management 10/19/2008

great food and friendly excellent waitstaff but management seems disrespectful to their servers. i have a hard time enjoying my meal while listening to the shrill voice of the female manager (janet?) lecturing and threatening her waitstaff. Having spent some time waitressing when I was in college I am amazed at the level of service these young servers (mostly college or high school kids) provide. they sometimes seem stretched thin though as i have often noticed they are asked to host, bus, and wait tables during busy hours. the most noticeable occurence of this is during the busy lunch rush when there is no host at the door and the servers are already busy at their tables. Management, if you want to maintain good customer service i suggest you figure it out and pay the labor costs required. Maybe Janet's time would be better spent helping the people waiting at the door instead of yelling for her servers who are already busy taking care of their customers to do it. Pros: good food good service Cons: management seems concerned with the wrong things more

We really enjoy eating here! 10/3/2008

My husband and I have eaten here numerous times. The food is always really good and the portions are large. We enjoy their dinner specials and fresh-baked bread. If you like home-cooking, this is THE restaurant in Georgetown for you. The staff is always friendly and the atmosphere is really nice. This is a great family restaurant worth driving to. Pros: Food and ambience Cons: Could use larger drinking glasses more

Organic Food, Tastes Great, Good Service, Friendly Management 7/25/2008

The food is good. This is a cool little cafe. I hear they are expanding too. Everything is organic. Old people, families, teens, yuppies, everyone around Georgetown goes this. This is a great place to eat if you visit central texas. I like any fish dinner they serve. My 3.5 year old enjoys the biscuit with honey. They have great desserts but we like the Nikki's fruit salad too. Pros: Organi Food, Tastes Great, Nice People more

Good Food 4/3/2008

It's good food and a fun atmosphere. It's clean and the portions are plenty. I have to agree that sometimes it's hard to get the servers attention and you have to wait for them to notice you which takes away from the enjoyment. But overall you can get a great meal at a decent price. Pros: Good Food Cons: Servers could pay closer attention more

good of yu're green! 3/15/2008

i am so glad to see that there are still people out there that take the time to care about our environment! Everything's is fresh, organic, and green! These are the good folks that deserve to stay around for along time! Such a pleasant trip to the cafe, and the atmosphere could not be beat! Again, good job guys! Pros: good, organic food more

Good food, but inconsistent service. 3/13/2007

We have been frequent diners for several years. We appreciate the fresh made food, and the use of natural and organic ingredients. The quality of the food is very good. The quality of the wait staff is very inconsistent Pros: Food. Use of Natural/organic ingredients. Cons: Inconsistent wait staff. more
