I have a hard time figuring out exactly how to review Sugar Mags, because the kitchen was having a bad day the morning we were there. So I will stick to the basic descriptions of the atmosphere and food I think....
The restaurant: I have never really ""done"" Gloucester, so when I read a great review for Sugar Mags that said it was in a great area to walk around, I was in. We drove out to Gloucester on a Saturday morning with the legend of SM's pancakes playing in the back of our heads. We finally arrive on Main Street Gloucester, and the reviewers were right, it is adorable. This was the perfect location for a destination breakfast!
We head into the restaurant, and it is a basic cafe space. Counter seats and tables, not really good for a group larger than 6 people. The high ceiling help lighten up the room. It is a perfectly pleasant cafe setting. There is a longish line, we put our name in and the hostess tells us it will be about 20 minutes, we only waited about 10. That was the last time a wait was underestimated!
After sending the waitress away 5 times, we finally came to a consensus order: Blueberry Pancakes w/ Maple Cream Cheese Butter, Ham/Carrot/Potato Hash, and an Egg White Frittata w/ Garlic, Onion, Goat's Cheese, Potato & Jack Cheese.
This is the part I will leave out do to a bad kitchen day...**whistles and looks around the room for 40 MINUTES**
The hash is AMAZING! It is almost so good I think about not using hot sauces for a minute. It is cooked perfectly, browned and crispy on the outside, and is not fatty at all. The pancake is too die for! It fills up the entire large plate, and is probably 1 inch think, but still fluffy. The maple cream cheese butter sends me to heaven. The frittata....well...it did have to make a trip back to the kitchen in order to not be raw...but after that it was decent.
The waitress was very nice, even if she did avoid us for those 40 hostile minutes. She apologized, brought us a muffin, and took 20% off our bill, so that was nice.
I would definitely head back to Sugar Mags. I think once you know what to order, this could be a favorite spot!
Pros: Amazing pancakes, creative menu
Cons: On this day, the kitchen was REALLY slow
