Best

I went to Ayla and she did such an amazing job on my hair! I even got the hand wax done complimentary and loved it!

Worst

I got my hair done yesterday- an all over color. I am very pleased with how it turned out and my experience in the salon was fine. However, as I was walking out of the Fitger's co...

AVOID THIS PLACE FOR ANYTHING BUT MASSAGE!!!!! 5/26/2011

My mom and I recieved gift certificates from my dad and brothers for our birthdays...we made appointments on my mom's birthday for a relaxing girls day out. However it was anything but relaxing. we had our massages first and they were good and then it was on to nails...my mom was cut twice on her fingers, never recieved her hand massage, and was cut twice on her toes during her pedicure. The employee assigned to her was unkempt and unprofessional. the salon was dirty and run down. her massage feature on her pedicure chair was non functional and the water was ice cold. she wrote a letter to complain and still has not recieved any response. Avoid this place! more

Not Recommended 10/14/2010

I have visited this salon twice for different services so I could write a fair review. My first experience was for brow waxing. Despite explaining exactly what I was looking for, the stylist was not particularly responsive. I asked for my brows to be trimmed, and she didn't do it. She also lost my arch and left my brows uneven as the only way to correct this would have been to overwax the brow. I left dissatisfied. I gave the salon another chance by getting a haircut. The stylist cut far more length from my hair than we had discussed (at least 2" more in some areas). Technically speaking, the cut is nice, its just not what I had wanted. I didn't care for the professionalism of this stylist, as she pushed hair color a lot despite my commenting several times that I was very happy with my current color. The cut was $15 more than what was quoted by phone at booking; I believe the receptionist quoted the starting rate for a cut and scheduled me with a more senior stylist - this would have been fine had I known at the time of booking. The salon has a nice atmosphere, the location is kind of difficult to get to. The receptionists are courteous and the salon is clean. The services just didn't meet my expectations. more

FACT 3/23/2010

In response to the second review made about shearkatz in 2008. Im a former employee of the salon and yes i no longer work there, but im still going to back up my previous place of employment and my work as a professional. As an aveda trained esthetican and massage therapist I was trained a certain way on how to do a facial, yes you can switch it up client to client but when working in an aveda salon "they" like you to keep a routine, so If you are someone who wants more massage with a facial you request that in your consult which i do with EVERY client. ultimately you are there for a facial not a massage so most of your time will be from the shoulders on up. MASK- the masks that we use are a form of clay...alot of times they leave a resido from where the towel thats wrapped around your head meets your hairline even if you think you got all of it wiped away. TIME- i was blocked out for 45 min 15 min for clean up. Overall I think its a great place to go for a service. And if you arnt happy which MOST people are then they will refund you either in another service or money back. Pros: great location by the lake! Cons: only 1 product line used. more

Delightful time. 11/13/2009

When I arrived to this salon and spa I was delightfully tickled. I hadnt been to Duluth before. My husband and I saved our money for a small get away vacation so while he was upstairs at the brewhouse nursing a beer I was downstairs getting pampered. I requested a full day spa which included a half hour facial, a manicure, pedicure, hot stone massage and I got my hair done :) The facial was soothing, the esthetician obviously knew what she was doing. I felt kind of bad, I asked her a lot of questions about the products but she didnt seem to mind. The hot stone massage was my favorite! The thereapist did a good job making sure the stones weren't too hot and that I was comfortable. The manicure and pedicure were fun! I was excited that they had OPI nail polishes! The same girl who did my facial also did my hair. It wasn't anything fancy (l usually get my hair colored at home with some blond highlights) but she did an amazing job styling my hair! So since my experience was so positive, I'm confused as to the review Spaluv gave Shear Katz. I was given a tour of the spa and didnt see any cots or rooms where they have color. In my facial the technician stayed with me the whole time, there was no timer. When my masks were on she not only massaged my sore neck but my hands as well. My pedicure was very relaxing. I was taken to a seperate pedicure area and the girl did a great job painting my toes (I'm semi high maintanence about my toe nail polish). During my experience there was always someone there to either make sure I was comfortable or that I had tea (I LOVE Aveda tea, I wanted to buy some but since I'm traveling I decided to go to an aveda salon closer to where I live) Their full day spa package is the best deal I found in town! No where else offered as many options or as low prices as Shear Katz did. This was an amazing spa experience. Thank you Shear Katz for making me feel so pampered and refreshed :) Pros: Relaxing setting and great professionals Cons: No slippers more

facial on an egg timer. enough said. 10/25/2009

I've never submitted a review here...but when I ran across the 5 stars reviews I felt I had to. Over a year ago, I went to Shear Katz for a facial and they put me on a cot in a storage closet. A young woman came in every few minutes to apply product to my face...then she set met to an egg timer and left. All the while people were coming in and out to grab color or perms or whatnot. You can only imagine how relaxing this was. pedicures are not much better. Perhaps I would be okay with this if they had bargain basement prices. But that is far from the case. I will say I had a reasonably okay experience getting an up-do there. It didn't turn out exactly as I wanted but it was professional looking and the stylist was really making an effort to get it right. But after the facial experience I'll never go back. There are waaaayyyy better options in Duluth. Pros: great aesthetic, young, but competent stylists Cons: spa services are the worst i've ever had more

Faithful Client 10/22/2009

I have been a client of Doug Peterson and his team at Shear Katz for over 15 years. Every visit I have is great. Doug and his team are always on top of the latest trends and his therapists in the spa are out of this world! I know because my husband and I travel year round and I favor Shear Katz over any other, anywhere! They are friendly, "Minnesota Nice" and have given nothing but the best for over a decade for me. Thanks Doug! Pros: Location and Staff Cons: My lipstick was discontinued more

BEST SPA IN NORTHERN MN 10/22/2009

I came in with my mother who is going through chemo for breast cancer. The staff made sure that everything was perfect for our full day spa packages and even worked around some of the treatments so that my mom could get the full experience without feeling left out (she could get a lot of massage so they gave her a body wrap and reflexology) We were able to relax and have fun. The atmosphere was calming in the spa and fun and full of action in the salon (there were girls getting their hair done for a wedding) The whole day was wonderful and helped my mom feel beautiful. Thank you Shear Katz!! We will be back! Pros: Staff is amazing Cons: Bathroom's not in salon/spa more

Great Space, Great Staff 10/18/2009

This salon and spa are wonderful. I visited with my sister and we enjoyed a great variety of services. We both got half day spa packages. I would definitely recommend to any spa goer! Thanks to the team at Shear Katz for a wonderful experience! Pros: beautiful location Cons: no restroom in spa to use between services more

Poor Services for Men 3/14/2009

Poor, overpriced, mens' services. Rude front desk staff, While the location is convenient (right in the fitgers mall) the spa is geared primarily (and rightly so) toward women. One expects, however, that mens' services be more than a gloss over. I was charged well above the advertised price for a horrible manicure. Pros: Great space/ambience Cons: Curt/Rude staff. Exposure to passersby more

Best salon experience yet 1/20/2009

I visited Shear Katz salon for my first time last week. I was first impressed at the cleanliness upon entering the salon. The receptionists are very friendly as well. My stylist was Rhea who was farely new. All my insecurities about a new styist went away however, as she did an amazing job! Hands down the best salon experience. I had a root touch up and for the first time the color matched my ends! She also gave me a complimentry hand massage and parfin wax treatment which was amazing! The owner also slapped a few highlights on free of charge! The results were great and I will never go anywhere else from now on! Pros: friendly staff, peaceful atmosphere, Cons: a litle difficult to find in the Fitgers more

Excellent! 1/2/2009

I was worried to go to Shear Katz after reading the other reviews here, but I had a Gift Certificate for a massage and a hair cut. The massage was probably the best I've ever had, and the hair cut was wonderful! This was the first hair cut I've ever actaully loved! I would highly recommend Shear Katz to anyone, and have already bragged about them to my friends. The staff is very friendly and had the best advice for me about Aveda products, the massage was perfect, they offered me a beverage when I got there and even offered a complimentary make up application after my services! I will definately be back to Shear Katz Salon!! Pros: Great Salon, Beautiful Spa, Excellent Customer Service Cons: It was a little hard to find! That's all! more

Go to Trends instead 9/6/2008

I am very disappointed in my experience with Shear Katz. I received a gift certificate to Shear Katz from my husband for my golden birthday. I was so excited and scheduled an appointment for a 60 minute facial. It seemed as though the whole process went by rather quickly, but I was not able to confirm this until I was back in my car. When I looked at the clock in my car, I realized the reason it did not feel like an hour was because it was not an hour at all. Of course I was charged for an hour facial, despite not even being parked for a total of an hour. Fortunately, I had my cell phone to call the receptionist because after realizing that I still had remnants of clay mask all over my face I was certainly not walking back through Fitgers...it's bad enough that I had to do it once. I was informed that I would be sent a gift certificate for the difference, which I declined, as I will never return to Shear Katz for any service. I was then offered another gift certificate for a mini facial, which I again declined. Finally, they agreed to refund the difference back to my card. So I ended up paying $50, including tip, for a rushed through facial that involved little massage and even less customer service. For $50, one can get an hour massage at Trends in Superior, where they give you a great facial, massage and even rub your feet. Pros: cute salon Cons: poor service/not worth the price more

Immature stylists! 5/18/2007

I visited Shear Katz because my husband had purchased me a spa package for Valentine's Day. The website looked great, and I was eager to go. My massage was fantastic, the facial was okay, but the cut and makeup application were terrible! I was hoping to leave the salon feeling relaxed and renewed, but instead I was on the verge of tears. Brianna was my stylist and she was just terrible. I will never go back. She spent more time eavesdropping on another stylists conversation and kissing butt with the owner than on my hair! I am still very angry that my husband spent over $150 and I had such a cruddy experience! I will go back to Trendz in Superior next time, they know what they are doing there! Pros: Gorgeous location, wonderful massage therapist Cons: Brianna is a terrible stylist! Inexperienced! more
