Best

We had a delightful Sunday brunch in July and decided to return for dinner in September. The food was excellent, as was the ambiance. Highly recommend!

Worst

Beautiful setting and grounds. The food was good but not great. Our big evening out was almost ruined by a service staff that prety much ignored us and required us on several occa...

A Gem off the beaten path 12/20/2008

The Riverview Restaurant is one of Portland's best kept secrets. My wife and I are so glad that we stumbled upon it on the computer and tried it out. It is set away from city lights in a large treed forest with a river running past the deck. Inside, a soaring ceiling, exposed beam ceiling and two fireplaces make for a very inviting evening. While a jazz pianist played Christmas standards and a few snow flakes fell past the windows, it was easy to forget that we were 8 minutes past the Troutdale truck stop. (Use exit 18 - Oxbow Park/Jordan). The Grilled Salmon over rice was outstanding and the Ravioli was delicious. I can't speak for the other entrees, but a lot of care went into the dinners we had. Even with our young toddler joining us, our waiter was very friendly and helpful. I can not relate to other reviewers describing poor or snobby service. We will definitely return to The Riverview and highly recommend it to family and others. Pros: Location, setting, food, service Cons: I have none. Kids are welcome but kids may not appreciate the restaurant more

UNEXPECTED SURPRISE 12/12/2008

My sister told me about this restaurant and I decided to take a group of friends there to check it out (10 of us). All I can say is that these people were on top of their game. The food was great (especially the salmon), the drinks kept flowing and we ended having an awesome night. The prices were actually very reasonable and there was even live music. We are definitely coming back and can't wait to see what summers are like here. Pros: Lots of parking, great setting, menu, can handle a large group more

Wonderful! 12/2/2008

What a wonderful dining experience we had recently at Riverview. The entire staff was so welcoming and attentive to our table. The service started with cocktails and crab cakes (so good), and led into perfectly prepared Seared Ahi for two of us, and Kangaroo Fillets for the other two. (I didn't try the Kangaroo, but they said it was really good) I also drink a lot of water, and this staff never left me with an empty glass. The four of us got to visit, laugh, and enjoy the ambiance of this beautiful restaurant. No one wanted to leave. I looking forward to my next visit!! more

snooty 11/17/2008

Every time I drive past the Riverview, the parking lot is empty. Even during peak weekend dinner times. What's the deal with that? I've been in there once and I don't see how you can get a view of the river from the ""Riverview"". Just views of the big nice trees and the other side. To actually see the water I think you'll need to visit Tad's. Sure, they are expensive but so are most of the other privately owned restaurants along the Sandy. The food was decent, but it kind of seemed like they were trying too hard. The interior is beautiful. But I never went back because it's just really snooty. It's like they only want to cater to pearl district type yuppies and don't care if they get any business from the locals in Springdale,Troutdale, and Gresham??? more

Impressed time and time again 8/26/2008

After visiting the Riverview for the first time I knew i was hooked. I have now attended on 3 separate occasions. The location, the food, the company and the experience make for the perfect evening. Whether you are looking for a romantic dinner or just a casual outdoor experience on the Sandy river, you will not be disappointed. I appreciate a good meal as much as the service and both are over the top at Riverview. The scenery and ambience alone will wow you. I highly recommend the Seafood tower, the curry appetizer and the Chicken portebello entree.. If you are in the mood for a more casual affair, I strongly suggest the Kobe beef burger. This was a well thought out menu and all items are appropriately paired. My hats off to the chef and the management.\r \r Whether you are looking for a nice dinner on the river or need to entertain mulitple guests, this a fabulous establishment and a must see in the greater Portland area. I promise a fabulous evening in a fine establishment that will keep you coming back for more. K- Pros: Location, location, location... Small step away to escape the hustle and bustle Cons: None as of yet more

Great Romantic Experience! 8/19/2008

As we sat next to what is a fantastic view of the Sandy river, we enjoyed a lovely evening of fine wine accompanied by the music of an excellent pianist. My husband and I held hands as we just took it all in. It helped create a special moment for us and I would like to take time to thank all at the Riverview for the great experience we had. I have to admit, I had not expected such an elegant restaurant to be located in such a beautiful place. The Riverview is a gem and I highly recommend the experience to all. The ambiance is fantastic, the food superb and the service exactly what you would want. I do suggest if you enjoy calamari, don't miss out on this appetizer. Thank you RIverview! Pros: A great place to get-away and enjoy a fantastic romantic dinner! more

River Bank beauty, Great customer service, delicious cuisine 8/19/2008

My husband and I were recently at the Riverview restaurant. We had a wonderful time, out on the beautiful deck. The river bank was the perfect spot for this warm and inviting restaurant. The service was prompt, and our glasses stayed full. Our waitress was informative and courteous. The food was so upscale, but welcoming at the same time. The curry appetizer was so flavorful with little hint of spice, it made me want more. We are big steak connoisseurs, and my husband said, it was one of his top five. We definitely look forward to going back soon. Pros: Location, Cuisine, Customer Service, Ambiance more

Excellent, made our conference dnner a big success! 8/16/2008

What a fantastic evening. Our group of professionals from around the state was treated like we owned the place. The staff went out of their way to make sure our group dined out on the deck, under the beautiful fir trees, next to a lovely landscaped garden and of course right along the Sandy river. The restaurant offers a special menu for groups so it helped tremendously in our planning efforts. The food was excellent and the service exceptional. A big thank you to everyone at the Riverview for making our annual conference a memorable one. My colleagues are still talking about it. Pros: A bit thumbs UP! more

Nicely Decorated - AWFUL SERVICE 8/11/2008

Had lunch at the Riverview while visiting Troutdale/Gresham area. Impressed by the decor and beautiful setting, but that's about it! Staff seemed reluctant to provide service. They were short, and looked very unhappy. Still we wanted to give them a chance, and thought that, maybe, the food would be great and the server would warm up. WRONG! They maintained the gloomy aura the entire time. The server had, absolutely, no rapport with his customers. Besides a couple of occupied tables on the deck, we were the only other table to serve in the entire restaurant. It still took a full hour for our food to arrive! The entire time, the server hardly even came back to check on how we were doing. He offered no apologies for the food taking so long. We were basically ignored with the exception of filling our water glasses twice (without uttering a word while doing so) before the meal came. When I got my Crab Cake Caesar, the crab cakes were cold inside!!! The flavor of crab in the crab cakes were non-existant. I can taste more of the starch than the crab! I have always been very leery of sending food back fearing what the staff would do to it behind the scenes, but I had to send it back. It was, simply, not palatable the way it came. \r \r We were, extremely, disappointed with the entire experience. We had high hopes for this restaurant, and would have loved to be repeat customers. The menu looked impressive. We would have loved to go back for dinner; however, that is no longer the case due to the poor service. A piece of advice: Great service can make mediocre food taste great, but great food, can do nothing to improve horrible service. Pros: Ambience, Parking Cons: Horrible Staff and Service more

JUST FOR THE VIEW ALONE! 6/24/2008

This place is awesome.. the view is right along the river.. Yoshida has done a wonderful job of decorating. It's big and in some cases ostentacious but the garden area is really quite nice.. there are lots of big trees about.. I sit outside and order from the happy hour menu. I LOVE their ceasar salad.. it 's never horridly busy so it's almost zenlike. The help are delightful and want to please. I always feel relaxed there. I just wish more people would discover it as I worry it might not be there much longer otherwise. The HUGE downside is that their prices are rather high, and that is why I usually order off the bar menu or am extra careful what I purchase. Pros: Beautiful scenery, lovely outside, lots of parking, middle of nowhere, but easy drive from PDX Cons: prices can be a little high more

Relaxing environment, great food 3/24/2008

I have been here three times......each time I have left just as happy as the time before. May I make a suggestion? Try the Salmon.....it is so wonderful it will melt in your mouth. This last Friday I had anticipated the Salmon dish and was NOT disappointed. Every bite was delectable, along with the specialty drink ""The Riverview"" which happens to also be one of my faves. The restaurant ""mood"" is so relaxing with dim lighting, mock candles on each and every table, and a lovely piano tune performed ""live"". I would highly recommend this for a special date or night out with a loved one. One suggestion though......there was a waitress who worked there who was wearing some really LOUD shoes that clicked very obviously when she ""trotted"" to and fro, to and fro, to and fro..... across the entire restaurant floor. It was a bit disturbing to hear because it broke the ""mood"" that the restaurant really sets. All the other employees were wearing ""soft sole shoes"" that were a lot less conspicuous to those who were dining. Luckily we were pretty easy-going people or I might have had to say something. (:\r Other than that, the restaraunt is FABULOUS. Just wear those soft heels. (: Pros: ambience, food, service, drinks Cons: loud clicking shoes worn by employees clash with the ambience that is promoted more
