Best

We have had experience in the bar area for dinner and just for drinks. We love the quietness, the staff is awesome and seems to know what we want before we even say anything. Ev...

Worst

The service was horrible. It took 45 mintues to an hour to get a pizza. I have NEVER waited that long to get a pizza at any other Italian resturant.

Overall good food and outstanding service 12/14/2005

Although this is not the ""best"" Italian restaurant I have been to, the food is pretty good and I am very impressed with the friendly, attentive staff. They don't offer the more authentic ""non-pasta/pizza"" dishes that you can find at some Italian restaurants and bistros, but the pasta dishes have never disapointed us. The portions are large and I feel well priced at an average of $13 a plate. In my opinion people who state that they are overpriced should eat at Denny's. They have a reasonable wine selection as well. Pros: Service, Good Food Cons: Primarily Pasta/Pizza more

Great! 7/29/2005

I have not had pizza there before but i can tell you the spagetthi is fantastic!!!! But 1 serving is enoogh to feed a family of four! I love the environment as well. more

my favorite italian joint, for what that's worth 7/21/2005

I work between 23rd, and the pearl districts so I've been to all of those trendy italian restaurants more than once, but for me Nona's beats them all hands down. It's definitely going to be a matter of taste though, the dining area, and bar are a bit on the shabby side, and the food is neither creative nor fancy. It is however, fabulous, and served in enormous portions. It's the place to go if you want homestyle comfort foods, but if you perfer a trendier setting, or ""creative"" italian food I'd suggest somewhere else. However if you want homestyle italian this is the place to go. Pros: huge portions, excellent meat sauce more

Excellent! 5/11/2005

I have never found a better pizza place. The food is top notch and in healthy portions. More seating would just make it better. more

Nothing but the finest 5/4/2005

Great Italian food including take out. The Pizza is semi thick crust and quality has been A+ since we first visited many years ago. more

Italian Food 2/7/2005

The spaghetti is overcooked, the spaghetti sauce often tastes burned, the chefs have no imagination. The Italian food is very American--what the Italians used to serve the American public in an Italian Restaurant while they served themselves different fare altogether! No imagination. Pros: Pizza Cons: Expensive for quality, Difficult access, Overcooked more

No good. 9/25/2004

I went there with my parents about 2 years ago. We ordered a vegetarian pizza with whole wheat crust (since I get whole wheat crust whenever it's available). Well, the toppings seemed cheap and scant, but the worst part was the crust! It was hard, chewy, and gross! Ever try to eat a tire? Worst whole wheat (or any crust for that matter) crust that I've ever had. But Ok, so the pizza's bad.. maybe the pasta is good? My husband and I lived so close that we decided to walk there one day, while they were serving the lunch buffet. I got a small portion of everything. EVERYTHING WAS AWFUL. The pasta sauce tasted so cheap and canned... kind of like, well, it came out of a can! Even my easy to please husband said he was not impressed. Pros: decent ambiance Cons: , expensive more

Alex 7/15/2003

A couple of words about their take-out service. I had friends over on Saturday night and decided to order dinner from Nonna Emilia. I ordered lasagna, cesar salad and garlic bread. And I just want to say one thing - WOW, I never realized lasagna may taste so good. It was excellent. Cesar salad came with some dressing which was also really really good. Three thumbs up! And I don't even mention anything about their take-out hostess that day ... It's like, you walk in, you see her, you're speechless for half an hour. Pros: lasagna, good service, take-out done on time more

It's Ok 2/14/2003

The service was pretty good, and my girlfriend's dinner was also good, but I was not happy with mine. I ordered the carbonara and it was the creamiest I've ever had. I could only it about a quarter of it because it was so rich, I did however finish the rest of my gf's pasta. Cons: a bit expensive more

nonnas rocks 2/8/2003

Nonnas pizza is homemade, and the tastiest pizza in town. The crust is perfect, they pile on the toppings, and it is served in an authentic italian setting. Definetly the best pizza in town. Pros: food quality, good value, great service Cons: always on a wait, small bar more

Food 1/21/2003

The service was horrible. It took 45 mintues to an hour to get a pizza. I have NEVER waited that long to get a pizza at any other Italian resturant. more

Zesty Italian 1/13/2003

Best westside family Italian resturant my Italain family has been going there for over twenty years. Great thick or thin crust pizza traditional or gourmet varities. Pasta portions are huge, there is always enough for two meals from one serving. Service can be a little slow when it is crowded. Flaw gnocci is usually over cooked, no seafood except calamari and claim sauce. Meat and marinara sauce is the best in all of Portland, great homemade French dressing. Pros: sauce, portions, pizza more

Nonna Emilia's is the best 1/9/2003

Nonna's has the most incredible Italian food ANYWHERE. There pizza's are super heavy-they feel like they weigh 10 pounds each. All of their food is wonderful-there lunch buffet is the best around. Pros: hevay pizza-10 lbs+, best Italian food, great prices more

Yellow Too Thick Crust 12/31/2002

The place has gone down hill in the last year or two. I went a few times after they changed the crust and added yellow food coloring. No idea why. They were always heavy on the dough and lite on the toppings, but when they changed the crust, I gave up. They also have an odor problem in the bar area (cat), and a mildew smell in the large dining area. A much better choice is Giovani's in downtown Beaverton on Broadway, right across from the Beaverton Bakery. The owners are related, but there is no comparison in the pizza. Pros: lively atmosphere Cons: cat odor in bar, pizza crust, skimpy toppings more

Best in the west! 12/5/2002

I have been eating at Nonna Emilia's since it opened. I consider it the best Italian food in Portland. The pizza is to die for. more

Comfort Food, and Lots of It 11/27/2002

Nona Emilia's might not have the most creative menu in the Portland area, but they make up for it by offering good quality Italian ""comfort"" food at reasonable prices. The general atmosphere of the restaurant is comfortable and classic, and the service is uniformly excellent. Their pizzas and calzones have a solid following, and one seven dollar calzone, larger than a football, supplied five meals to my boyfriend and me. Each entrée is sure to provide leftovers. Go to Nona's if you want traditional Italian fare or distinctive pizza. Pros: great prices Cons: not creative more

Not Emilia's 11/16/2002

I've heard about Nonna Emilia's for years -- now that I've eaten there, I wish I waited longer. We had the gnocchi and the tortellini, and at around $12 per plate I expected more than frozen pasta drowning in bland sauce. Boxed wine and chopped salad? Combined with the (very nice) strolling accordionist, it all seemed as if they were trying for kitsch rather than cuisine. The staff was so nice and the atmosphere so friendly, it's a shame I hated the meal. I'll keep going to the east side for my pasta. Pros: nice staff more

This is still my favourite restaurant! 11/9/2002

This was one of the first restaurants I visited when I moved to Portland and it is still one of my favourites. The portions are huge, especially if you order a calzone. It is easily as wide as a large pizza pan. However, the long drive and expensive prices may keep some people away. Most plates are $10-$20, but keep in mind that half of that will come home with you for lunch the next day. The drinks are great as well, and there is a bar attached to the restaurant (but far enough away as to allow families to dine in peace). I suggest asking for a table against the back wall near the kitchen. Though you may hear some noise from the kitchen, you will be kept away from the entryway which is easily the worst place to sit. So many people coming and going is very disrupting. Pros: Good food, Romantic environment, Large portions Cons: Expensive, Out of the way more

Yummy in my tummy! 11/7/2002

Nonna Emilia's is one of the best pizza resturants in Portland. Its totally laid-back but nice enough to bring someone out on a fun date with a sit-down dinner... The place is pretty dark and can turn into a karoke night when the accordianist comes out. The pizza is absolutey yummy! Try 'That's a Sarah' or is pizza isn't your thing try some calazone or lasagna... Definately worth it to bring your family or go out with some friends! more

Nona's Oby ver Giovani's 11/6/2002

The last reviewer obviously hasen't eaten at Nona's in a long time. It's been years since they went to a yellow flour. I just went to Giovani's last week and was really disapointed in service and quality of pizza. I vowed I wouldn't go back. I wonder if that's why Giovani's is not on the top 10 list? Pros: Unbeleivable pizza, God Pizza Cons: Long waits, Expensive Pizza more

Best Pizza in Town!

Editorial

A lively accordionist roams the dining room on weekends, giving the place a kitschy if not somewhat authentic Italian feel. The plump, chewy focaccia and heavily battered...
