Best

The fries are to die for. They're battered, and amazing. It's obvious that they care about the customers, in the preparation of the food and in service, all the staff is friendly ...

Worst

Saw the high rating on citysearch... Decided to try it.

Excellent in all categories, what a great surprise!!! 7/6/2007

Obviously, Monteaux is one of a kind. Where else on this website do you see the owner responding to nearly all reviews? We want to say thank you for the special touch and a great establishment. The beer list is impressinve and I am English born, so I appreciate proper beer. The food was remarkable, not what we were expecting from a public house, or any other "pub" in Portland. We thoroughly enjoyed a burger and the Shepard's pie. Service was friendly and accomodating. We would never have heard of this place, until it showed up on Passport unlimited, which makes it even better. We will recommend to our friends and will return as often as possible! Our only complaint would be the location: Beaverton. Still worth a drive from SW Pdx Pros: Service, beer list and hand crafted excellent food! Cons: Beaverton, the burbs more

California Burger - Melts in your mouth 6/29/2007

I've always had a great experience here - never bad service or inattentive waiters. I make a point to bring out of town relatives and coworkers here, because the burgers are outstanding. Try the California Burger. I dare you. Pros: Great happy hour menu, good food, friendly staff more

WORST customer service I ever received in Portland 6/22/2007

I arrived in Monteaux at 10:35 PM (25 minutes before closing) on a Friday night 06/23/2007. When we (just the three of us) first got there, the waitress immediately told us that we need to hurry ourselves in ordering since they are closing in 25 minutes. So, we tried to rush ourselves by calling our friends and asking them what they wanted so that we can order before they got to the restaurant. However, when the waitress knew that there were going to be seven of us, she immediately said this and I quote: "Guys, maybe you want to find other place to eat since we are closing really soon." I look at my cell phone's clock and it said 10:40. Basically, we were chased out twenty minutes before closing. Pros: Good food, cheap eats Cons: need to retrain the waitress' staff on excellence in service more

We Love Monteaux's 6/21/2007

Pros: The Menu!! Cons: None more

Our service was friendly.... 6/20/2007

I'm not sure about the reviews that have been posted about the service. My co-worker and I have been in serveral times after work (we are both female and aren't regulars yet - but we plan on it!) and the waitress (and waiter) that have served us were always very friendly. The Jamaica specials this month are AWESOME and so are the drinks. Hope they put the jamaican pork on the menu permanetly (the friendly waitress mentioned that they sometimes do that with the popular items). I look forward to going back - need my mojito fix! Pros: Tasty food, large portions Cons: Too many items on the menu - hard to decide what to eat! more

HORRIBLE STAFF 6/18/2007

If I had the option to give it NO STARS I would. The food is not bad at all but the staff are just not friendly at all. I need to get vickiloy's secret since she clearly states she is a female who has NEVER been slighted in the least. It sounds like she is a regular which probably explains why she hasn't been slighted. It seems anyone there who seemed to be a regular got pretty darn good service. I didn't only recognize the lack of service with myself but with others around me unless of course you were a man ordering alcohol. I was with 2 of my female friends and all 3 of us were very unimpressed with the service or lack there of. And don't try and get your food ordered in a special way say with something extra or without something it only seems to annoy the waitress. As another poster mentioned they are not rude just not friendly at all. The service is the only reason I will not return to this restaurant. I do eat out quite a lot and I have received bad service before but it was more neglectful than outright rude and unwelcoming. This restaurant has many upsides but I guarantee service is NOT one of them. Maybe I should start dining with Vickiloy. I might get better service dining with a regular. If you like good food and bad service then this is the place to go. All in all I would not for one second recommend this restaurant. There are plenty of places in Portland with good food and excellent service whether you are a man or a woman. Pros: Food Cons: Awful service more

One of my favorite restaurants! 6/14/2007

This is one of the friendliest establishments that I have ever been to. From the owners to the wait staff to the bus boy, everyone is friendly, helpful, conversational, and ready to serve each and every customer in a way that makes you feel like you're at home-except you don't have to cook or clean! The food is first rate. I have never had a meal that I didn't like and I have been going there since they opened. Their monthly emphasis on foods from different countries keeps the menu interesting and allows one to visit over and over without ever tiring of the menu. If I have been on a special diet, I have asked for special preparation and they always accommodate my requests with food that not only meets my needs, but tastes wonderful as well. I highly recommend this wonderful restaurant and always take friends and family there whenever I have the choice of the evening. This is one place where you just can't go wrong! (And, yes, I am a female and have NEVER been slighted in the least.) more

Very Poor Service, Unfriendly staff, extremely slow 6/11/2007

This is my second time dining at Monteaux & I am very disappointed AGAIN. I did enjoy the food the first time around & the service was prompt as far as keeping our drinks filled but beyond that is was really slow. The waitress we had the first time was not that friendly but I figured she might be having a bad day so I still tipped her very well and decided I would give it another try. My coworker and I arrived about 11:30am and we were greeted and seated promptly by the host. My coworker and I decided to order pretty quick and easy food that didn?t really require cooking to see if that might speed up the service. She ordered a cold sandwich & I ordered a bowl of soup and an appetizer. That approach didn?t work. We were still there about 5 min short of an hour. Despite the fact that this place was slow on getting the food out I still would have considered coming back. However, based on the service I will not patronize this restaurant again. Our waitress was not at all friendly. There was no smiling or any indication at all of her being happy to be there. The waitress helping her out was not any friendlier when she brought our food. They were not rude but they didn?t give off any vibe that was welcoming at all in-fact just the opposite. We were both very polite and in no way demanding. What really upset me was when three gentlemen sat next to us & all the sudden our waitress was all smiles. She was very friendly to them while laughing, being helpful in offering up good food to try, & overall being very welcoming. Definitely a contrast in service. On our way out the second girl, also at a table of gentlemen, was all smiles & very friendly, as in talkative and welcoming. Another contrast in service! As we were walking out our waitress said in a barely audible tone "thanks ladies" with no smile. Two bad experiences=Never returning to this restaurant. I don?t recommend this place at all. To the waitress who waited on us if you are upset about the tip then be friendlier. Pros: Parking Cons: Horrible horrible horrible service!!! more

Good food & Nice environment 6/10/2007

I visited Monteaux's a couple weeks ago for lunch. I arrived right at open with my boyfriend and we were acknowledged and seated immediately. It took a few minutes for our server to come to our table but she acknowledged us and said she would be right there. The waitress took our order and when our food arrived it was very good. The fries were perfect and and the calamari was awesome. I have had a lot of calamari because it is my all time favorite and this was the best I have had with a very yummy dipping sauce. I have only a couple complaints. The first was how long it took to get our meal. Two different tables were sat after my boyfriend and I by about 15 minutes. Both tables had just two people and they arrived after we did one of which ate and left before we were even served and the other served 15 minutes before us. My boyfriend and I and the other two tables all ordered hot food do I am not sure what happened there. That was a little frustrating since our whole point in arriving at opening was to have a shorter wait but it isn't anything that would stop me from going back. Although I said the food was really good my only complaint about it would be that the fish in the fish and chips meal was a little to greasy but still good. My boyfriend had a grilled wrap (unsure of the exact kind) and he said it was excellent. I would recommend this restaurant for a meal out as far as the food goes but the staff isn't all that friendly except for the host and the busboy. The waitress didn't seem all that thrilled to be there or having to wait on us. I think it is affordable with good food and a nice atmosphere. If you added friendly staff it would be perfect. For me service is really important and I like to feel like the waitstaff is willing and wanting to make my experience very nice so in that regard I will go elsewhere next time where I can find good food and good SERVICE! Pros: Good food, Nice atmosphere, Ample parking Cons: Long wait for food, Unfriendly staff more

Great Hamburgers!!!! 4/25/2007

My boyfriend and I absolutely love the hamburgers at Monteauxs! The Leprechaun burger is to die for! I would recommend trying a Teriyaki Sandwich and asking for a burger instead of chicken. It comes out incredibly juicy and always hits the spot! If you?re in for Happy Hour you?ve got to try the Chorizo Nachos. One plea I will make if an owner happens to be reading this review is that you please, please, please bring back the Meatloaf Sandwich with Tomato Jelly. No other Meatloaf Sandwich compares. Thanks again for crafting such a unique and mouth-watering menu! Pros: Great Hamburgers and Sandwiches Cons: A Little Too Dark more

Inconsitent but decent 4/11/2007

So to start I have to say that the idea of the resturaunt and the ambiance is great. To promote a different country's cuisine every month is a great idea and a lot of the time Monteaux's nails it. I've never had bad service there and it is very clean and well run. That said, the food can be inconsistent. I remember the first time I went the food was outstanding - I had the sheppards pie. Unfortunately the next time I went and ordered the same dish I noticed it was not nearly as good... too salty. The same could be said of the fries - one time great and crisp the other a little greasy. Also, some of the cuisine of the month misses from time to time (which I expect due to rotating menu) Overall I'd say it is a good resturaunt and it is one of the better ones in that area and can be a great experience. Hopefully they can get a little more consistent... Pros: Pretty good food and interesting selection Cons: inconsistent but not enough to stop me from going more

Love it 1/7/2007

It's unfortunate the last two comments might leave a reader with a bad impression of Monteauxs. I have to say I have never in the handful of times I patroned the restaurant, had bad service. From the moment I walk in the door to when I leave I have always felt more than welcome. The severs are always smiling, chatting amongst each other and with costumers ... all customers. This is one of many reasons I come here; the waitstaff genuinely seems to like their job. The food of course is the other reasons. It's good, simple as that. Granted I haven't had all the menu items, but what I have tried is superb. Where else in suberbia will you find good pub food? Certaintly not at ..... If you have never been and decided to read some reviews first, which is something I do often, give Monteaux's a chance. You won't be dissapointed. Pros: Not a chain, happy hour, great service Cons: can be too dark inside at night more

The anti-suburban establishment 11/25/2006

When my husband and I moved from our downtown apartment to our new home in Aloha/Beaverton, we believed that outside of the occasional drive back to the city, we were resigning ourselves to nothing but ho-hum chain restaurants. Not so!! We discovered Monteaux's about a year ago, and have enjoyed regular visits ever since! The country specials are a great way to try something new, and while not all of them have turned out to be my favorites, I've really enjoyed several of them and like having the opportunity to step out of my dining "comfort zone". Unlike some of the other reviewers, I've found both the food and service quality to be quite consistent in each of our 10+ visits. Their seasonal dessert special of pumpkin cheesecake is to die for too - don't miss a chance to try it! Well done Larry and Sal, we're thrilled to have you in our neighborhood!! Pros: Great beer selection, creative menu with lots of variety, nice low-key atmosphere Cons: Location doesn't allow for much outdoor seating in the Summer more

Good Happy Hour 7/27/2006

I was looking for a place to spend happy hour this evening, and I came across this place as being fairly close to my house. I read the reviews on Citysearch, and was impressed that the owner took the time to reply to some of them. I like family owned, non-chain businesses. My husband and I went there for the first time today for happy hour. Pros: good happy hour! Cons: strip mall! more

Caustic Customization 7/16/2006

Stopped by for drinks and cheap eats, but was greeted with one of the stingiest happy hours I've ever come across. I ordered the $3 cheeseburger and, being intolerant to mayonaise, made a request that my meal be served sans sauce. My inquiry was met with a statement that the kitchen cannot fulfill custom orders. Custom? Medium-rare is custom. The addition of bacon is custom. I was omitting a step, therefore saving someone in the kitchen time. I didn't realize the customization required by omitting sauce. So I asked the visibly impatient server for more time. A slight roll of her eyes, and she was gone. We did not see her again for nearly 15 minutes. Pros: Decent beer selection Cons: Server's attitude more

inconsistant but decent place on the Westside 7/4/2006

Monteaux's is an interesting place. I have had great food here and then just so-so on more than one occasion. The decor is nice, with inviting colors and a nice layout inside. The restaurant does monthly ethnic food themes and I think this is where the inconsistancy lies. It is a great idea but one that doesn't always deliver. With a little more research and testing of dishes, it could be a great magnet restaurant, with a unique draw that could mean big business. As of right now though, the concept needs some tweaking. The drink selection is big and they even have a decent beer selection that includes hard to find hard cider. Pros: Good deals for decent food and drinks Cons: Inconsistant quality more

What an absolute delight!!!!! 2/20/2006

I've been to many restaurants out of the city and let me tell you, this one by far exceeds any other locally owned business I have been to. When you enter the building you can tell the people care about every aspect. From the smiles down to the very personable service. Can I say how nice it is not to have the cookie-cutter server who wants to kneel by your table and try to sell you things they have no idea about? The food and the atmosphere are enough here. But you also have the extra added bonus of feeling like you belong and they look forward to seeing you. Try the halibut and don't miss the monthly specials. The clam chowder is divine..... Pros: prompt service, hours, great food more

Best French Fries 12/17/2005

The best french fries I've ever eaten are served here! Go just for the fries. We love to eat here and go often. Highly recommended. more

Disapointing 12/14/2005

Pleasant, warm atmosphere. Very average food. Extremely unattentive servers do not smile or exchange any friendly words. The restaurant was not at all busy, we were seated cetrally and still were paid little to. In speaking with friends we learned that they had a very similar experience. We will not return. Pros: Warm colors, attractive decor, easy to find Cons: unfriendly, unattentive, average food more

A Favorite for Several Years 11/29/2005

My friends and I are regulars at Monteaux's. We love this place. The owners Sal and Larry are always inviting and the serving staff is stellar. The food is consistently good and they are constantly finding ways to improve or expand the menu offerings. The monthly specials by country are a fun touch and a good opportunity for variety. The caramel apple martini is fabulous if you're in need of a cocktail. Also, the bananas foster french toast offered for breakfast on weekends will make you go weak in the knees! Pros: Great Staff, Warm Environment, Good Food & Drinks Cons: Coke not Pepsi ;) more
