Best

We love Lupes Escape and during the busy holiday season we really appreciate the great customer service and friendly atmosphere.

Worst

The food is one up from Taco Bell and prices aren't too bad. But if you want good mexican, there are lots of other better places. Don't understand the high rating on this one ei...

A little gem 7/3/2011

Lupe's has never failed us. We were sent here several years ago by a friend who used to live in the area, and we've never walked away hungry. The portions are HUMONGOUS and very reasonable (you can usually get a killer chicken quesedilla platter with rice, beans, and a cocktail for under $12). No, it's definitely not the fanciest place, and the chips may be from a bag, but the service we've experienced has always been warm and friendly, and the food piping hot and incredibly satisfying. Maybe you can find more ""authentic"" Mexican food deeper in Hillsboro, or fancier, higher-end dining in downtown Portland; for Washington County's best Mexican bang for the buck, this is our choice hands down. more

More like 'escape from Lupe's' 5/23/2011

Awful food! More Americanized than most Mexican restaurants are. Food is not fresh and sauces definitely do not seem homemade. Also, whats up with a Mexican restaurant that serves cold, bagged, store-bought tortilla chips. Homemade, warm tortilla chips are most common at any Mexican restaurant. Lupe's were stale and tasted old. All around failure. This place sucks! Let it burn! more

WOW THE BEST MEXCIAN FOOD EVER!!!!!!! 4/7/2011

So I was looking for really great mexican food and my freind told me about Lupes Escape. My first time was two nights ago and I must say I was very surprised on how great the food was and the service ( I think its family owened ) I had The Torpedo burrito and wow my eyes were bigger than my stomach! This burrito was 10 inches and big enough for two people... The food came out fast and hot and to start off they gave me chips and salsa that was to die for!!! You can tell that everything was made fresh daily and that they took time to make my meal. I felt like I was on Vacation the food was that great!!! Anyways Lupes Escape you will be seeing me alot more and im telling all my friends and family. more

THE WORST! 3/19/2011

My husband and I have been looking for a GOOD mexican restaurant in the Hillsboro area that we can frequent for a good meal and pleasant atmosphere. This place definately is NOT it! The food was incredibly bland. (I always thought Mexican food had some ""kick"" to it!?) The salsa was like pureed tomatoes with disgusting chips kept in a box in the corner! (Literally, not figuratively!) We read the reviews before we went but, like some of the others, I too have lived in Hillsboro for 45 years and have known Lupe's was a long-time restaurant in the area. How? I have no idea! The place was dirty, service was less than stellar.... I could go on about how disappointed we were but what's the point? The big chains like On The Border and Chevy's beat this all-over-the-place! Sad, sad statement... more

Good Mexican Food, Tasty and Hot 1/19/2011

My husband and I and our friends have been dining at Lupe's Escape for years. It is not fancy, but it is very good. The atmosphere is cheerful without being fake, and the staff is always welcoming. more

Quite possibly the worst Mexican Food I've ever eaten 1/7/2011

Living in the Aloha area, My wife and I often pass Lupe's Escape on our way to and from home. We finally decided to try it, and called in for a pick-up. I requested some beef fajitas, but was informed they don't carry fajitas (yeah, pretty lame for a Mexican restaurant). The hostess informed me on the phone that they did have been dishes that were very similiar to fajitas. I took her advice and ordered one order of beef colorado, and pork carnitas. I was informed that the food would be ready in 25 minutes for pickup. I arrived to the restaurant to find a open kitchen that was riddled with dirt, 7 cooks working in a 5x5 area that wasn't up to health code (happen to know a little about that), and the two waitresses seemed as though they were doing you a favor by seating you. I found it funny that the register had a sign on it reading ""please pay in cash, it helps us keep our costs low"". For a business to be open for 20 years, to still request cash payment usually means one thing. They employ illegal immigrants and pay them in said cash, not having to provide insurance and benefits (hey, who said they didn't save on their costs). Now, on to the food. Worst crap I've ever laid my eyes upon. The ""carnitas"" was simply a pork roast sliced and served over rice, and the beef ""like fajitas"" was braised pot roast cubes with sauce. Each of our meals came with a side salad, my wifes in an individual container, mine served in the sides container covered in sourcream and guac by the time I got it home, along with the salsa. They served store bought tortilla chips, and didn't even take the time to heat them for their customers. If you go to Lupe's Escape, expect to be disappointed. more

Best Place for Mexican Food. 10/25/2010

My husband and I have been going here for about a year now. Best house margaritas, and it doesn't matter what you order, everything is good. more

great mexican food 5/25/2010

I had dinner and had the chimichanga with beef and chicken and the beef and chicken were so tender they melted in your mouth, it was full of flavor and the service was excellent, my experience was great and I will surely return numerous times Pros: great margaritas and great food Cons: only one in around more

Totally Disappointing 5/8/2010

After seeing all the great reviews my family decided to try Lupe's I decided to believe the reviews stating that poor reviews were written by the competition. What a total disappointment! My main reason to try it was because I was craving chips and salsa. The chips were really stale, generic tortilla chips (not even the semi-authentic ones you can get at any grocery store). And the salsa was bland and sweet. The flautas were filled with very under-spiced chicken...it had no flavor. It's like the people who are cooking have never tasted authentic mexican food. The only bright spot was the Jalapeno Poppers (perfectly cooked and served with an awesome Raspberry Chipotle Sauce). Would definitely not go here again. Save your money and go to one of the carts downtown. Pros: Decent Margaritas; Great Jalepeno Poppers Cons: Bland Food; Stale Chips; more

Decent food. Decent price. Ok atmosphere. Ok service. 2/25/2010

PROS: Pros: Good food. No crowds. Cons: Old and cheap ambience. more

To die for!! 8/24/2009

The staff is amazing and very friendly. Food is amazing, great place if you are driving through defiantly stop by this place!!! On of those little amazing spots!!! Pros: Best mexican food in metro area Cons: Nothing at all more

We luv this place! 5/23/2009

Me and my friends and family love this restaurant. When we consider having Mexican food, this is the place we always go to. The food is fresh and absolutely delicious! The few people who have given Lupe's Escape a negative review must work for their competition (such as Juan Coronado, etc.) Pros: Excellent food, friendly service, reasonable prices Cons: Can get crowded more

A Favorite! 3/30/2009

Love this place, have been going there for about 10 years. The food is fresh, tasty and affordable and the atmosphere is fab. Definitely give this place a try, you wont be sorry! Pros: Great food, drinks and price! Cons: busy! more

Microwaved food. 3/6/2009

This place has terrible microwaved food. You can see all of their microwaves in the kitchen. Pros: The rice and beans are okay. Cons: Microwaved food, bad menu selection, bad margarita's, bad chips & salsa, dirty & grungy. more

this is not really mexican food... 3/3/2009

having recently moved to the OR from AZ, and having grown up in the southwest, ie Phoenix and San Diego and having lived in northern NM for twenty years, I consider myself to know decent mexican food and I must say the while Lupe's is cute, the food that we had there the one time we visited was pretty definitely the worst excuse for mexican food I've ever experienced...had better in south Florida and Cleveland, OH. Pros: nice colors on the wall, liked the hats Cons: food was unrecognizable as mexican more

A Hidden Treasure 10/15/2008

We've returned to this divey little restaurant time and time again. The food is excellent. Authentic, fresh and delicious. The service is good or bad depending on the time of day and how busy they are. Pros: Great Food, Great Value Cons: service can be slow when they are busy more

Best Mexican Food around 6/5/2008

This is my first-time message. I worked at Lupe's back in '83 as a diswasher, I was 13 years old. This place has been around forever! My grandfather was mexican therefore a lot of cookin' was a must. I really enjoy the food here. Everytime we want to go out for mexican food-it's always Lupe's. I've been to many resturants in this area only to return to Lupe's. Pros: food,service-chimiconga's Cons: hours more

I'm messing with everyone's sacred cow--or pig, but... 5/17/2008

Really, I am not looking to rant--we have passed it enough times and we love a good divey Mexican joint--and went in with those paticular rose colored glasses on. The smell as we walked up was very promising... The place was dirty, and that is not really a knock because, well, it's a dive and that is just part of the casualness of a place. The menus had ""samples"" of many of the dishes. OK, that'll slide too. The salsa? Oh, I am sorry, sugar has no place in a salsa. The salsa is Just Wrong. Funky chips--and I will not abide with the arguement that you cannot get decent tortilla chips in Oregon, they are out there, I know, and I love 'em--these wierd little things at Lupe's are not good, not stale, just not good. And that poor pig that died to be my carnitas...steamed canitas? Nope, that ain't right. Cook it in a flavorful broth, then shread it and fry it up, that's how it is supposed to be done--and this wasn't a bad day in the kitchen--though a peak in the kitchen as we left would gave us the impression that they had a very, very bad day--no, this seemed to be how they cook carnitas there. The pico de gallo was make from those crappy green-on-the-inside WinCo romas, I reconize 'em. The guacamole was actually good, the service, very good--God love the servers there. So are we heading back? Most likely no--though to hear you all rant about this place, maybe we will--the bar specials looked good and liquor can hide a multitude of sins in a kitchen... Pros: Servers, guacamole, easy in and out and good parking, easy to find Cons: the kitchen and the housekeeper--though if they get a cook, the latter becomes endearing more
