fab views, great ambience, and LOBSTER! 6/7/2010

The Lobster Shack is open seasonally Late March to Late October, with varied hours depending upon exactly when in their open months. Located on the water, with two fantastic views of lighthouses, and a short walk from a view of Portland Head Light. Outside and indoor seating, orders are called off by number and you serve and clean tables yourself. It is BYOB - which means you can grab your favorite local brews and bring them along for your lobster feast. I had the Lobster Roll, clam cake, and clam chowder. Everything that is fried is cooked in canola oil with no trans fat, that being said the clam cake was definitely all fry and no clam. Overcooked and too crispy, the only saving grace was dousing it in the tarter sauce. The clam chowder however, was light and delicious. A light broth base, without out the heavy cream thick consistency of many other chowders, and chock full of potatoes and clams. Finally the Lobster Roll, a toasted roll piled high with pieces of lobster and a huge dollop of mayonnaise. Market Price was $12 and that made it on par for other places in the area. Worth the drive, a mere 20 mins outside of downtown Portland. Pros: view of the ocean, decor inside, quality of food Cons: make sure you get here early or you will wait!, pricey more

A Bit Disappointing 10/2/2006

Make no mistake, the lobster roll here is still good but it does not compare to far more superior rolls you can find further north. That said, the real star of the menu here are the deep fried whole belly clams. The clam chowder is a thin brothed styled soup, not the thick and creamy type more commonly found along the coast, which can be either a good or bad thing depending on your particular taste. \r \r For the non seafooders, the shack offers excellent burgers and other non seafood fare that are generally pretty good. But most everyone who makes this trek opts for the lobster roll. Pros: Whole Bellied Clams; thin brothed styled clam chowder; great location. more

Best View in the Portland Area 9/17/2002

The view is the thing here. You can sit outside or inside and have a fine view of the ocean. The food is good basic downeast seafood. Desserts are great too. Cons: limited parking, crowded at times more
