Chapter 7:
This is the more common form of bankruptcy relief. It is called liquidation although for most of people who file it will not result in loss of any property. Chapter 7 wipes away (discharges) all of your unsecured debt (credit cards,medical bills,unsecured loans,etc.) In almost all cases you can still keep your home as long as you agree to continue to pay the mortgage.
Chapter 13:
This is a reorganization of your debt. You agree to pay back your creditors through the court,a certain sum of money (usually between 10%- 100% of the debt) depending on your income and assets. At the conclusion of a Chapter 13 bankruptcy case any debt remaining that is unpaid is wiped away (discharged) just like in a chapter 7 Bankruptcy.
