Best

This is the best Mexican food I have tried in the entire Austin area. This little ""hole in the wall"" strip mall place beats any number of other places I have tried since moving...

Having travelled Mexico extensively and being quite the critic on REAL Mexican food, the name "La Cocina Michoacana" caught my eye as possibly a good authentic Mexican restaurant....

Probably as good as it gets! 7/19/2006

Having travelled Mexico extensively and being quite the critic on REAL Mexican food, the name "La Cocina Michoacana" caught my eye as possibly a good authentic Mexican restaurant. Boy was I right! First of all, this is a small, family run business. The name means "The Michoacan Kitchen" (Michoacan is a state in Mexico). Most of the staff does not speak English, however (I'll withold their names) the young girl and the older slim woman speak English rather well. This is a good sign that you're in for some real Mexican food. To make a long story short, I've been going there for more than 2 years now. Even before I was a regular, from day one the service and food were top notch. The dishes served here are authentic southern Mexican food. They even have 'machacado'. I challenge any authentic Mexican restaurant to offer this dish. La Cocina passed with flying colors. The food is very good, cheap, and are served in perfect portions. The service is top of the line. Expect friendly conversation, attentiveness by the waitress to your drink levels, and a genuine informal person to person type experience. As stated before, this is a Mexican family that treats their guests as if you were in their home having dinner at their house. I can go on and on, but this place is my best pick for Mexican food in Austin thus far. Awesome, friendly service combined with absolutely delicious food at low prices provide for a combination that sets the highest standard for the casual dining experience. 5 stars all the way! UPDATE! The original owners sold this restaurant and now it's called 'Los Reyes'. We decided to eat there to find the food was only 'par' and not exceptional. The prices were higher and many of the original, authentic Mexican dishes are no longer offered. The service was prompt and friendly, but we'll not be returning. Changed to two stars from 5. more
