no love for keith 2/27/2011

Great selection ! Not a place that I can recommend. However. I might do my research there. but the service and integrity would have me buying elsewhere. I feel that I was treated unfairly in my purchase and trade. I would have rather not even have dealt with the owner, as I might be able to write my bad experience off to disinterested employees. I felt lousy for having left my money with this business. more

Keith's Sporting Goods 2/19/2011

Bought a Walther P99 this month. I had no issues, thought the employees were helpful, and they seemed very nice. I bought the P99 for a decent price. They have a great selection of new and used firearms. I recommend them to anyone looking for something to shoot. more

Avoid at all cost 2/5/2011

NOTE: After reading through the various reviews of this business, I was surprised by the comments. Not the negative ones- those seem consistent with my own experience- I was surprised by the many positive comments. I strongly suspect that someone related to the store may be the sole person responsible for positive comments on the net.\r \r I went to the Rose City Gun and Knife Show and checked out what Keith's Sporting Goods had on their tables. I got excited about a S&W Model 19. It was pretty beat up, with worn blue finish. It seemed to be in fair shape mechanically though. I like guns with scratches on them so I don't have to live in fear of putting the first dent in them- also they're cheaper.\r \r The gun was listed for 435 with a 25 dollar "special discount", so 410. Do not do business with this merchant 2/4/2011

I went to gun show and checked out what Keith's Sporting Goods had on their tables. I got excited about a S&W Model 19. It was pretty beat up, with worn blue finish. It seemed to be in fair shape mechanically though. I like guns with scratches on them so I don't have to live in fear of putting the first dent in them- also they're cheaper. The gun was listed for 435 with a 25 dollar ""special discount"", so 410. My brother helped me check the prices online and this seemed to be high for a gun in it's condition. I asked Keith (know he was Keith because an employee told me he was the owner) if he would take 325 for it. He got mad at, told me I didn't know ""the value of guns"" (I guess that makes two of us). And just turned his back to me and walked away, as if I had personally insulted him. The funny thing is that I would have been willing to bargain up in price quite a bit. People go to gun shows to haggle, and I was willing to go above my first offer, had Keith made me a counter offer. Or he could have just said ""no"". I can respect that too. Instead he lectured me and turned his back to me. I have never been treated this rudely at any gun show, or place of business in general. Obviously I didn't end up buying anything from this merchant and I'm glad that I didn't. I got to experience Keith's treatment of customers right off the bat, preventing me from making the mistake of buying from him. I would warn anyone thinking of doing business with Keith's. Considering how poorly I was treated trying to buy a gun, can you imagine how bad it would be if you were trying to get him to honor a return on a problematic gun? Every other merchant at the show was amazingly nice and polite- I suggest you buy from one of them. more

Great selection prices and sometimes service 2/1/2011

Keith's is probably the best shop in PDX metro for variety of hand and long guns, though gunbroker is pretty good as well. Not so much for accessories. You go to Keith's because they have what you need, and they are efficient - I called about a specific model, they told me quickly if they had in stock and what they could order, but had to check with their vendor, and promised to call me back - AND THEY DID. So many other shops say they will and don't. So +1 for efficiency. They had in stock a less common variant of one of their standard products, so +2 for variety and stock on hand. As for chatty customer service, it depends, some of the counter help will chat over the counter, some will answer technical questions fine but if you try to make conversation they will be stonily silent & pull the East Coast vibe on you (I'm from Boston so I can say that :-)). But that beats some places where you get some old blowhard who lectures you like you are 5 years old.... So, don't go there expecting to make a friend, but for quick and efficient service. And their prices are very good as well, found what I was looking for for less than I would have paid on the 'net, with shipping & transfer fees taken into account. So all in all, a decent place. more

Buyer Beware. 2/1/2011

Unpleasant employees, very poor return/exchange policies, and ok.... prices. And why would you buy here....\r \r One time customers and poor attitude, they have no clue about maintaining relationships with customers and would rather get your dollar once and burn a bridge.\r \r Being a conscious buyer i do my research before making purchases, Keiths is not bad as far as prices but is in no way worth the trouble. Everything they sell has a short return policy and that is assuming they actually return/exchange, in my experiences they dont... Sure they can order a lot and claim to sell a lot (the most in oregon) but if this is true they should still be friendly and have 21st century policies without the smug attitude. When you are helped... they almost act like your putting them out, like you as one customer are not worth the time, and trust me if you have any problem with a purchase they are not the ones to go to, after they get the money they could care less about customer service. Anything with research can be bought cheaper than Keiths shopping around whether online or otherwise. Trust me you may give them your trust, money, business, and respect but THEY WILL NOT RETURN the FAVOR. Go buy something cheap or pay them a visit and you will know what i am talking about. more

A formerly loyal customer..... 1/31/2011

I was a loyal customer at Keith's for 15 years. I now live 1.5 hours away but would still drive there to buy because of price, selection, and I did like Keith. I always saw firsthand how bad the customer service was but when the stars aligned and one could get some attention, especially from keith, it was good. I was aware that other gun shops would actually be cheaper on a gun I was interested in, but I remained loyal. I bought and consigned a lot of guns at Keiths. This last June I saw Keith at the gun show and offered a trade deal, he countered a little lower than I wanted. I said I wanted to think about it. I returned 30 minutes later to do the deal but he then he refused to do it. He said he had ""always been fair to you, but you walked off."" He then went on to condescendingly lecture how I should have taken the deal at the moment, how he had always been fair to me, and he wasn't going to do the deal because I had decided to think about it. That was the best reason he offered. I was stunned he would treat anyone like that let alone a customer. I walked off but came back ten minutes later and patiently waited for keith to tell him I was disappointed with his attitude and that it was a blow to my loyalty to him as a customer. I even told staff I was waiting for keith and they would pass it on to him. He walked passed me more times than I could count and intentionally ignored me. I waited 15 minutes to no avail. I determined never to buy a gun from that man again. I went from the show straight to Northwest Armory (who I used to think did'nt cut the mustard compared to keiths) They gave me a better trade offer than keiths did for the gun I was looking at. I also bought a second gun from them that day. Since then I have bought a third gun as well as accessories. I have found a place that has great service, matches and often beats keiths on prices, and is not staffed by arrogant fools. Stick with Keiths to see the most selection in one place, but there are other cheaper stores with a whole lot less stupidity involved. What I learned from all this is a store goes bad from the top down! more

Great store if you know what you want. 1/20/2011

Wow, Ive never seen so many bad reviews...hahaha.\r My personal experience is that quite a few people shopping for firearms want to chat it up....I don't know why this is. I'm guessing people just want to show that they have lots of experience with firearms and not sound stupid. If conversation is what you want, definitely go to another store...this place is BUSY! \r If you've done your research and know exactly what you want, then this is a great store with very competative prices. \r Ive made two pistol purchases there and found the process very streamlined. The key is to patiently wait your turn and know what you want. If you are there to window shop and touch every weapon in the place save your time and go to Cabelas....you can look all day there and chat up as much as you want.\r A word of advice to Keith's would be to get a number pull thingy so people are helped in the order that they have arrived. more

Selection, Service, and Prices! 11/25/2010

During my visit yesterday, I counted six people working the counters at Keith's. The parking lot was full, and every one of the people was working with a customer. I knew exactly what I wanted, and when one of them was able to help me she was polite, prompt, and knowledgeable about their inventory. She had to run across the street to an inventory location for the gun I wanted, but she did so immediately and within a couple of minutes a young man brought the gun into the store. I checked the gun in the box (just a serial number match), agreed to buy, and she immediately gave me the background check form and turned me over to the young man who was getting state background checks done on the phone. He had been waiting for the State to answer for a few minutes, but once he got them on the line I believe I heard him complete six or seven applications in a row. I filled out my paperwork, gave it to him, and while he was working with the state I paid for the gun. The whole process from beginning to end, walking into the store and walking out with the gun, took about 20 minutes. These people work efficiently and fast, and they know what they're doing. Folks, this is a business, and a high-volume business at that. I think that Keith's is set apart by the size of their inventory and the number of guns they sell. They have very competitive prices and massive selection, so if you can do your research on the Internet and walk in knowing what you want, there's an excellent chance that you'll walk out with that gun, and you'll do it pretty quickly considering the number of customers in the store. If you go into Keith's expecting the ""social club"" atmosphere of many of Portland's gun shops, if you need instruction or education, you're probably going to be disappointed. Keith's does seem to expect you to know what you want. I've been there when there were not many customers in the store, and I saw customers getting plenty of time from the sales people, because they didn't have a line waiting. If the place is crowded, and if you have customers waiting and you're faced with somebody who's undecided, aren't you going to try to move them along? If you walk in knowing what you want, you should expect to walk out a happy customer. If there's a crowd in the store, the way I see it is that those customers who just want to chat with the sales people and handle a bunch of weapons, and are really undecided, are being inconsiderate of the rest of the customers in the store, and unrealistic. If you're one of those ""shoppers"", you'll be happiest at a gun show, or one of the unsuccessful gun shops in Portland that have no customers in the store and not a whole lot of inventory, either. Keith's is a business, a high volume, competitive price business with an excellent selection. The behave like good business people should. If you need a lot of social interaction, go join a club. more

Focus is on sales, NOT CUSTOMER SERVICE. SHOP ELSEWHERE 11/13/2010

Keith's has a great selection, but honestly, I've found a lot of the same guns elsewhere, priced identicially, and without the attitude. Yea, they'll argue that they are a big, successful volume business (so what), but the bottom line is that Keith's seems to suffer from the kind of cocky arrogance you typically find in a business that has a recession-proof commodity with lots of willing customers. Success goes to their heads; they become bored, complacent, and distinterested in building longer term customer relationships. BEWARE. You can do better (or at least just as well) elsewhere and with much nicer sales people. more

great selection 11/5/2010

They were referred to me by a friend. He said they had the best selection near Portland and also carry consignment pieces. Also read reviews that they have good prices. Went today and was impressed with the selection. So many reviews complained about the customer service so I was expecting bad service but received the opposite! The girl who helped us was friendly and knowledgable. It was extremely busy as well since it was a Friday afternoon. There was a lot of staff there and everyone was nice that we talked to. Ended up walking out with my first hand-gun and I'm sure we'll go back many more times. more

Lotsa' Guns. No Service 10/15/2010

Great prices, great selection, espcially used. Horrible customer service. After one purchase, I have since started using going to The Gunroom or The Gunbroker in Tigard. I pay a little more, but would rather my $$ go to a company that treats it's customers like they want them to return.\r more

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE, OVER AND OVER AGAIN 8/21/2010

I cannot believe that Keith allows these type of business practices to go on. I have purchased many handguns from there ONLY because their cheap....but so is their work ethic and customer service skills. I have, and recommend to anyone with a sense of self respect, decided to pay a LITTLE more money for a LOT better shopping experience and less frustration due to the lack of customer service. All the negative things said in these reviews are 100% true and the ones that say good things must have looked like money. more

A++ 8/18/2010

Well I'll start by saying in my opinion Keith's Sporting Goods is the best the Portland area has to offer when it comes to everything I'd want out of purchasing a firearm. I recommend them to everyone I know with an interest and until I logged onto this site I had never heard a bad thing. Hence the signing up and posting my own review :). I go to Keith's because of their prices first. I'm not sure if they offer a price match or anything of the sort but I've never been in the market for a particular item they carried and could find it anywhere else cheaper. Prices aside, they've always been informative without force feeding me their opinion. It's one thing to give an honest opinion on an item when asked. Another to tell me as their handing it to me for inspection how unhappy I'll be for purchasing this item because of . I experience this in a lot of other places. Not Keith's. I have no issues with their Customer Service. Sure, it's not like you get greeted as you walk into the door like Walmart, but then again I'm not shopping for underwear. I'm looking for a firearm! You walk in, look around for what you want. And who wouldn't want to browse through that selection. I usually end up walking out with more than intended. When I see what I actually came for or something that interests me you catch the attention of someone. You'll be next in line. That simple. Once you have them in front of you they'll take care of you. Their Customer Service has shocked me at times. I can recall walking in to purchase another firearm a few weeks after making a purchase. I got delayed on the background check. Keith's wife, knowing that she just sold me a firearm and there's no way I should be waiting again, hopped back on the phone and talked to them. Explained the situation and 5 minutes later I was pulling out of their parking lot with my new pal. The firearm, not the wife. I highly recommend them for everything related. The drive may be a little long for some, but you'll make up for it in money saved. I've never walked out unsatisfied. If you do, turn around and give them a chance to make it right before instantly forming a bad opinion. You might be surprised. more

Keith's Sporting Goods (Gun Shop) 7/17/2010

Well, first off...customer service was less than desirable at this location. I am in the military stationed in another state and I came here to purchase a few items. I spent $2,500.00 not a fortune, but I would expect to be treated with a little more respect as a customer than what I received at this shop. If I asked any questions, it was obvious that I was simply a nuisance to the individual who was showing me weapons, and any request I had produced contempt. I bought a handgun the week prior and received a $100 dollar discount for being in the military which I appreciated, but when I produced my ID again to buy a long riffle and explain that Oregon was my home of record and not where I currently reside, the customer employee stated ""that does not do anything for me"". I don't ask for special treatment, nor do I expect it, but here I felt like I was a second class citizen. I will admit that other employees were much nicer and I felt that management was good. As far as selection goes, I give it a thumbs up and a thumbs down. The shop did not have a great selection of long guns, decent handguns...they have another wear house that supposedly has 5K of inventory. Overall, I would not recommend going to this shop, customer service lacks. If you know exactly what they have in inventory and you like their price...get in and get out and appreciate your new firearm. If you are on the fence line about a particular caliber or type of firearm, go somewhere else. Purchase: Glock 19, Bushmaster modular carbine and a Boyt case Pros: Selection, price Cons: Attitude, Customer Service, Selection more

Would not have believed it 6/13/2010

I will recommend Kieth's to anyone who wants to see what truly terrible customer service is. It's laughable. You'll enjoy the stop even if you just happen to be passing by to a shop that actually want's your business.\r \r I read these reviews AFTER I visited because I couldn't believe it. I'm certain Kieth does this on purpose. There can be no other explanation. NONE. It's quite a show of disrespect.\r \r Had visited the Spears Web site that directed me to Kieth's for a Spears reloading manual.\r \r Walked in and stood. Didn't want to get in anyone's way. After all, there were three customers and three employees in the place. Stood there for about a minute waiting for someone to at least look up and acknowledge me. Didn't happen. I walked around looking the place over for any manuals thinking someone would say ""Hi"". Didn't see any manuals. No one saw me.\r \r I got tired of being ignored and I walked up to the girl putting stickers on stuff behind the counter. She was chomping away on her gum and yelling across the store; something about how Kieth told her to do it. Looking right past me, she doesn't even see me. I say ""Hi"" to her and ask if they have any reloading manuals. Without missing a chomp or even looking up she says ""No"".\r \r That was it. I was out.\r \r I remember walking down the stairs outside and thinking how TOTALLY unbelievable the whole thing was.\r \r Then I come here and read all the reviews about lousy customer service. I'm betting this is Kieth's claim to fame and that he's good with that. Hey, at least he's famous for lousy service world wide.\r \r Wad Pros: Lousy customer service is entertaining Cons: Don't carry Spears manuals even though Spears thinks they do more

Keith's Sporting Goods 6/9/2010

As soon as I walked in the door and headed to the back counter, I was greeted. I knew what I wanted, was shown two options and when I decided, I looked around the place, picked up another item and headed to the the check out. Without asking, a buck was dropped from my overall bill. Yes, I will go back. Pros: Know their stuff Cons: Parking lot sucks more

customer service 4/30/2010

when we finally got help the worker smelled of candy, but was helpful..When he left we again waited for help witha differant item and got NO help, so we ended up leaving without making any purchases. Pros: fair selection Cons: customer service sucks, 1 worker was eating while helping more

Best Gun Shop for 900 Miles 3/8/2010

I used to not like Keith's, but after making a half a dozen purchases in 6 months I've grown to like them more & more. When at a gun show Keith did not have a Mossberg I was looking for, so he took the time to call his store to see if it was there before I drove 50 miles for nothing. Keith's has always had cheaper prices than anyone I've ever looked into. Also Keith's has a great selection of ammo which is priced almost as good as Bi-Mart which is a miracle. If your looking to walk into Keith's and walk out with a gun like you would a happy meal your gonna be disappointed, because they are very busy running several background checks at once. You need to wait your turn and be patient. Hammer42 recommends people to the Gun Room, but the Gun Room is the WORST GUN STORE EVER. The owner of The Gun Room isn't a master dealer like Keith's, he even buys his ammo from Wal-Mart & marks it up about $20 a box. I would recommend anyone to Keith's, they have a vault across the street from their store & have about every gun you could want, just be patient and Keith's will come thru for you. Pros: Cheap prices/ Good Selection/ Stocked with Ammo Cons: You might need to wait, guns aren't fast food. more

Lacks customer service 2/17/2010

I went to purchase an AR-15 from Keith's, I was greeted by a female right away, however; they did not have many on display. She asked me what I was looking for, and at no time did she say that she had more in a warehouse or anything like that. I didn't realize how big Keith's was until a couple weeks later at the gun show when they had hundred's of guns laid out on the tables. I went to the gun show and both times I had questions, I had to grab the attention of a sales person from them, I was never approached, and they were quick to leave and help someone else. I am now a proud owner of a AR-15, and DID NOT purchase from Keiths. Pros: Huge selection.... Cons: Customer service more
