Katella Bakery's New Ownership Loses Customers 5/21/2012

Say goodbye to what was once a fabulous bakery. It was a very exciting place before the new ownership took over and decided to overhaul the previous amazing mouth watering experience when viewing the previous bakery shelves. Previously you could delight in an amazing large delectable cream puff which has now been reduced to an ordinary looking cream puff you can get at any bakery. The strawberry shortcake was too good to be true before the overhaul. It was huge stacked with layers very high overflowing with fluffy delectable whip cream. Now it's been reduced to another ordinary looking strawberry shortcake you can find at your local super market. The carrot cake was awsome too. It can even spot in the the display case because it's been reduced in size with the old prices. I use to brag to all my friends about the Katella Bakery and which items are the best and how it was so worth the long drive until recently when I sent some people over and then couldn't understand why they didn't also rave about the bakery. I learned the next day when I was at the bakery and wanted to purchase my usual items and saw that everything has been changing. It is now a regular bakery and not worth the trip. My friends were not impressed and recommended another place which I am looking forward to visiting. It is so sad that new ownership can destroy what was once a fabulous and special bakery that set this bakery apart from others. My last two trips to Katella Deli and Bakery I just skip the bakery part because when I look at the display there is nothing that entices me anymore. Conversations with old customers say the same and claim the ingredients are also different. In the mean time I am learning to make my own pastries and searching for another outstanding bakery. more

Sadly Declined 5/6/2011

My family and I go back as far as South St. Deli. We found Katella after So. St. closed. The food quality has gone down hill fast and the service just recently is poor. (had to ask for everything accept water) Our waitress forgot to bring cole slaw which comes with the sandwich. Most of the bus boys are better than the waitress'/waiters.\r Meat is fatty, gravy and potatoes are cold. The portions are getting smaller too. All in all I'm making less and less trips to this Deli. Bakery gets 4 stars. more

Be Warned freinds nd neighbors !!!! 3/23/2011

Be warned freinds and neighbors. My husband and I have been going to Katella Deli for many years in fact we started at the South Street Deli and loved the food, but over the last year it has been steadly going down hill.\r Last night we were seated quickly, we waited for 15 minutes to order, and than waited 45 minutes to get our food. When we finally got our food it was cold and my husband still didnt receive his corn beef and cabbage that took an additional 10 minutes. His corned beef besides being cold was very fatty and thin to the point of not being eatible, The boiled potato had brown and black spots completly through to potato. we would have sent it back but we didnt see a server for 10 minutes. \r My grandsons chicken salad sandwich had bones in it which made everyone sick and no one else could eat. Please note we asked to see the manager 3 times and was told she is upstairs --- well come downstairs and take care of your customers and your employees. She (the manager) did come down and took my husbands dinner back (he couldnt eat it) and told us she would remove it from the bill thank god , but when we got the bill it was still on the bill. The management was rude the servers were rude and we will never eat there again. I advise you to stay away !!!!! more

Nice Bakery.... Not so Nice Food 11/4/2010

I put the rating in the middle, but really it should be 2 ratings. One for the bakery and one for the resturant food. Summary Bakery 4 stars Resturant 1 star. \r \r Baked goods are awesome and quite yummy. They are somewhat sweet but overall pastries are light and not dry. Cakes have a nice smooth flavor (can taste the vanilla, etc) Price to portion in the bakery is very reasonable. \r \r However, the resturant is another matter altogether. From the group of 5 of us our bill was approaching $80 for lunch. For simple sandwiches and a soda. i myself got a roast beef sandwich that was so tough and fat laden it definately hasn't been cooked properly. 2 in our group had some facimile of chicken soup. From their description and the spoonful I tasted it was a broth from a can concoction. Another had a chicken salad sandwich that was a scant thing of what the co-worker said could only be ""blandness"" On this I would give it 1 star.\r more

Good food, large portions, nice atmosphere, extensive menu! 6/30/2009

I've been eating at the Katelli Deli for over 14 years. With very few exceptions my friends, family, and I have always loved the food and the service. Yes, if you want chicken in the matzo ball soup, you have to add that to your order. The portions are large, food always fresh, great meats, and the bakery is fantastic. I have had many of their delicious desserts from the bakery, both single serving and cakes. A custom cake that was ordered for my birthday was fantastic and I was extremely grateful my friends bought it there...yummmm, chocolate! Good place for large groups, just call in advance to let them know if you can. Pros: Their all-in-the-bowl soup is fantastic and enough for two! Cons: Long waits on Sunday mornings more

Disappointing 3/23/2009

Ordered chicken soup with matzo ball. Got chicken broth with a large but tastless matzo ball, a fair bit of noodles also lacking flavor and not a shred of chicken in the bowl.\r \r Boyfriend ordered the carrot cake, a generous portion, but very dense and overly sweet rather than tasty.\r \r Overall very disappointing. more

Best Borscht Around! 9/4/2008

I love the borscht at Katella Deli -- IT IS EXCELLENT! My husband loves the matzo ball soup with the chicken bits. The sandwiches are LARGE and they do not skimp on portions! The chopped liver is to die for. Must try! This is a fabulous deli! more

Not a real Deli 1/1/2008

This place leaves a lot to be desired, the servers handle the money, food is over priced. All the drinks are over priced coffee is of poor quality and $2.59 or so may have gone up....If you order chicken soup THE CHICKEN IS EXTRA Sometimes the beef on the french dip is nasty you don't know what your going to get. The servers are treated like SLA VES. The bakery is not that good only select things are consistently good.\r THE PLACE IS GENERALLY DIRTY DUSTY THE LIGHTS ARE LOW FOR THIS REASON IN MY OPINION\r The corn beef and cabbage is great you will like it. NO SOURDOUGH BREAD if the place isn't kosher whats the big deal have had for the most part good service better than average food, but not consistent.\r I realize that all restaurant's have the Spanish folks working there, but they need to not have long winded conversations in there native tongue. I know what they are saying and some of it is not nice towards the customers. The cooks need more supervision to insure QUALITY. They don't know things like well done, medium hold the this and that. If you want something different on your order GOOD LUCK . more

A small poor quality coffee is $2.59, (coke-milk etch $2.59) Poor quality chicken 11/24/2007

I ordered fried chicken to go. The hostess never asked about a break selection so I had to exchange upon pick up. I requested a cup of coffee to go and to my surprise it was a small cup, poor quality and $2.59. When I commented the hostess indicated a lot of complaints regarding the beverage charge. Upon eating our meal I found that a majority of the chicken was coating!!! Great big thick fried coating, yuck. The coleslaw was very heavy in vinegar. I picked up pasty (lemon cake and eclair). The cake was just like inexpensive cake from the market (cheap market) and I do not know about the eclair but it looked like the same quality. My mother is in the hospital and I was delivering so I did not have time to go elsewhere, but I will not be back. Pros: Can't find any Cons: poor quality-priced too high for some items more

WAY OVERPRICED COFFEE 11/4/2007

Went on 11/3/07 for breakfast. Food great, service great, Bakery to die for (have to try their garlic-parmesan\r BAGEL CHIPS- highly addicting) the prices are reasonable (usually) \r BUT, $2.50 FOR A PLAIN CUP OF COFFEE IS RIICULOUS !!!!!!!!!!!!! we'll go there again but, you can bet I\r won't have anything but water to drink until they take care of this abomination or serve a decent quality\r coffee. Pros: Food and Service Great. Cons: COFFEE WAY, WAY OVERPRICED !!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

Good food and okay service 6/29/2007

I live in Atlanta and was visiting the West Coast for my father's birthday. We went to the Katella Deli to pick up his birthday cake and decided to stay for dinner. The menu was large and varied. The clientale was mostly older and seemed to be enjoying their food. I ordered the chopped liver. While it wasn't piled high like NYC Deli's, it was quite tasty. I was disappointed that I could not order it on sourdough bread though. I would love to go back and try some other items that looked/ sounded good. Pros: Food choices Cons: Service is slow more

Don't Order the Monte Cristo ... Complain if you don't like it! 4/10/2007

I was looking forward to trying something new and was so disappointed with my unedible Monte Cristo. It looked like plastic and tasted like cardboard. I complained to the waittress that I didn't think I could eat it. I couldn't make up my mind, so my date suggested that I order a French Dip that he could share with me because he didn't like his roast beef sandwich. She happily brought me a French Dip that was moist and delicious! The sandwich was delivered with french fries that were old and overcooked. I complained again, and the waittress brought me a fresh serving of delicious fries. Afterwards, we visited the bakery and picked out a delicious carrot cake, fresh rye break, and a flakey blueberry danish. Overall it was a below-average visit. I wish that the owners would review their menu items for quality. more

Just drive to LA if you want good Deli 1/27/2007

Drove 20 Minutes to Katella Deli in search of some Jewish Penicilin. Sadly, Katella sorely dissapoints. That the waitress didn't know what a two-cents plain is, that they serve corn bread with matzo ball soup, that I've had better matzo ball from a jar (OK, it was clearly the same matzo ball), that lox and eggs is served with potaotes ""O'brien,"" all reasons that Katella misses the mark so greatly. Even the bakery, my last hope for the place, serves a sad excuse for rugelach. Perhaps they spent too much time on the jelly donuts and ""fresh baked"" coconut cream pie. It's not that I wouldn't reccomend Katella deli. It's fine-ish if you just want run of the mill diner food. But, if you are looking for deli food with any authenticity, just head up to the valley. Pros: Decent Coffee Cons: fake jewish food more
