Damn good Michigan sushi 10/22/2009

Sushi in Michigan, you may ask? Impossible! But yes, this is actually good sushi. I stopped there for a business lunch - excellent spicy tuna roll. Special rolls were well done and filling. Service was good, though not stellar. Worst part - presentation. The sushi looked as though it had been tossed on the plate. But you don't go there to look at the food, right? Overall, a very good sushi experience, and I'll surely be returning if I'm ever in the area again more

Amazing Sushi!!! 2/23/2009

I am half Japanese and have eaten authentic Japanese food for a great deal of my life. Ive tried a lot of Japanese restaurants but this is definitely mine and my fathers favorite (he is the Japanese parent). Their fish is always very fresh and you always get a free little octopus/seaweed salad appetizer at the sushi bar. The chefs are super friendly and interact with you the whole time. They have a tv with Japanese gameshows, cartoons and news playing the whole time. The service is great and all of the food is wonderful! Ive been going there for over 5 years now and have always had a great experience. The nigiri is mmmmmmm! If you love sushi, go to Izakaya!! Pros: Nigiri, Free appetizer, Customer Service, Food Cons: Sometimes loud/busy on weekends. more

Still, by far, the best Japanese cuisine in my book!!! 2/27/2008

I've been going to Izakaya SanPei ever since it opened. Sure staff have come and gone over the years, but my personal exerience has always been great! No one makes a better Nabaeyaki Udon than these folks! The Terriyaki Salmon is always perfect and the service (perhaps because they know me) has always been pleasant, timely and friendly....even on a busy night! Their salmon skin rolls are an old favorite and no one does it better. I've since moved and now live over an hour away, but I make the drive if I want the best! more

best sushi on the west side 1/13/2008

Hands down the best sushi on the west side, and quite possibly the best spicy tuna roll ever.\r keep to the sushi bar as the service otherwise can be suspect.\r \r If your lucky the chef will serve you up some complementary samples on and off the menu. more

Disappointing 5/2/2007

This restaurant is right by my home so I thought I would love it. Guess again. This was by far the worst restaurant experience of my life. Although the food was good, the service was horrendous. I have never been treated so poorly in my life. Pros: Good food Cons: Rude service more

Best Sushi, great services 1/27/2007

Sanpei has the best sushi!! The service is wonderful and the Sushi bar chef's are GREAT! \r We eat at Sanpei at least twice a month. It is pretty busy on the weekends for dinner but that is because it is so good. If we have to wait for a table or the sushi bar we normally do not have to wait that long.\r \r This is a place that we will keep eating at we just love it!! Pros: price is good, service is friendly more

Service is excellent, food is very lousy 6/25/2006

We had absolutely the worst Chicken Teriyaki we ever had in the Detroit Metro area. The chicken is over-cooked and very dry. This is quite a disappointment especially knowing how good this restaurant once was. They also have quietly lowered the quality of the Tan-shin Bento (box set) served for dinner. The quality and quantity was much worse than they used to be. I suspect they had lost a good chef or two recently. Pros: service is quite nice more

Finally, an Izakaya and Not Just Sushi !!! 5/24/2006

Sanpei is not only sushi. The sushi is MUCH better than most psuedo-Japanese restaurants, but many Japanese complain about the many sushi places and lack of izakayas. Japanese food is NOT all sushi and sashimi and most Japanese eat more often at izakaya than sushi places. Izakaya means a casual, pub-like restaurant where there are various kinds of food, grilled like yakitori and yaki-onigiri, sushi/sashimi, and even sausages & french fries. A wide mix of food to be eaten like dim sum, i.e. many small dishes to be shared between people. I lived in Japan for seven years and Sanpei is more authentic than almost all ""Japanese"" restaurants in the area. The atmosphere was great, too, and service was fine, despite the whiny comments of another reviewer. Japanese dishes are served when they're ready in this type of place, buddy, not timed to come out together. I'll be back... Pros: Authentic, Friendly more

Best Sushi in Detroit Metro Area 1/10/2006

We have been eating sushi for over 25 years throughout North America, and by all means this is the best! It is not a haute gourmet establishment, just a great sushi eats. Authentic, fresh, and good. Probably the only downside is that you must make a reservation... it is the favorite haunt of our area Japanese executives for dinner! Pros: Excellent Fresh Fish, Attentive Service, Bustling Cons: Can Expect a Wait more

Nothing Special 1/8/2005

A nice place to eat if you don't want to travel far from home but there are definitely better sushi bar/restaurants out in the area. Our order was incomplete and we had to wait for our waitress to come by some 15 minutes later to get the rest of it. Sushi was alright; banana tempura was delicious; everything else o.k. too. The price was also a little higher than what I was expected. Pros: Local to Canton, local to Plymouth, friendly atmosphere Cons: , service, price more

A Hidden Gem 4/21/2003

Tucked next to an ACO in a nearby strip mall is our favorite sushi restaurant. Don't let the location deter you! Everything is so fresh and tasty. We go for the sushi (007 roll Yum!), but have tried other menu items, and all are wonderful. They also have nice lunch combinations (my favorite is shrimp tempura and california roll with soup, salad and tea $9!!). Pros: very fresh raw fish, great service Cons: can be crowded more
