Hunan Taste

This has always been my most favorite Chinese Resturant and I travel an hour to get there. My last review was 2 years ago, boasting about how wonderful the food is. Unfortunately I went a few days ago, bringing along my parents and daughter. It has sadly changed for the worse. My mother and I ordered the shrimp and hers were underdone, no pink but an opaque color and they were not cleaned. The dark string was left inside. My shrimp were the same and they smelled 'fishy' not 'oceany'. What used to be vibrant veggies in the veg fried rice were one or two peas and a piece or two of corn. The rice itself was a dull color and tasted blaned. The waiters are still robot like and they all stand in the middle of the resturant and watch you, never smiling. It is nice to be able to call them over quickly but unnerving that they are all gathered in the middle like ""The Stepford Waiters"" or something! Weird. This restaurant is the best Chinese restaurant in all of New York (City included). You may have to wait to get a seat, but once you do, the service is quick, the food is amazing, and the quality is consistent. The dishes based on chicken and beef (such as shredded beef with garlic sauce or general tso's) are made from high quality meat and thus have very little fat so you can be sure each bite is delectable. The fried rice is great, and the seafood is top notch as well. I cannot say enough about this restaurant as most Chinese food is low quality dog meat, it is a refreshing surprise to find such quality in a food type that is usually not respected as gourmet. based on the number of cars in the lot and the busy valet, we assumed this would be a good experience. we were incredibly disappointed. we were seated and had to ask for menus which were thrown at us. we ordered tangerine beef and chicken lo mein. the beef was stringly and tasteless and the waiter had to come to the table and stick a knofe in it because he could not determine if it was beef or chicken. the lo mein tasted like spaghetti with steamed chicken. no one at any point came over to ask us how the food was and we left hungry.
