Editorial review from Citysearch 1/23/2013

I have to disclose, Right up Front, that I am very sorry to write this review...\r I have been going to the Golden Crown Restaurant in Beaverton for over 20 years. However, I have not been there since my last visit in 2006. If I was to have written this review then, as opposed to today, it would have read much differently...\r I was so looking forward to having my favorite (always order dish) Shrimp Egg Foo Yung, Pot Stickers, House Special Rice, which I considered to be from past experience, some of the very best I have had tasted in Portland, on many, many occasions.\r Very sadly, I will say compared to what I had been served in 2006, I have never had worse Asian food in my life. The (favorite) dish I was dying to taste again was the Shrimp Egg Foo Yung. It appeared on the plate as something that resembled a pile of gooue, as opposed to the nice firm, thick pancakes, with a luscious brown gravy, which I had been served (every-time) before. The egg mixture was not even cooked, but runny, the shrimp were U-40 in size, but sparse and were absolutely flavorless.\r Next, were the Pot-stickers, Absolutely nothing like what I remember. These things looked like small baked potato's, and were just as firm as an un-cooked potato. You had to apply firm pressure with a fork (and) knife to cut into them, and once you did, what was inside was some meat-like mass that had once again, (no) noticeable flavor. It was like eating a mass of cardboard. Oh, and they were served with sealed packets of soy-sauce and distilled white kitchen vinegar, not the good ginger essence'd Pot-sticker dipping sauce that I so vividly remember.\r Now, onto the rice. This was really the show stopper here. Their House Special Rice (which is how I used to order it) was nothing more than a rancid-oil tasting pile of cheap soy-sauce saturated rice with some bits of solid something that you might say was a meat like substance. Again the dish tasted like it had been made from un-refrigerated stale rice with a taste I was absolutely not familiar with.\r In summary, all this came to me so unexpected based on past (but pleasurable) experiences. The only possible justification for this dis-pleasurable experience has to be, there is no one running/owning/cooking/buying raw materials in that establishment today, that has had any affiliation on my multiple visits in the past. \r The one positive note was the friendly service from the wait staff. They were apologetic and did not try to convince my dissatisfaction in anyway, but were what seemed embarrassed. Nor did she quibble when I said I was not comfortable paying for this meal, as I did not!\r I have never written a negative review in my life, only positive ones, until today. And I cannot feel good about not letting someone know within the current ownership, that they have failed miserably in keeping with tradition that The Golden Crown of Beaverton (used) to stand for, which is very sad.\r Again, this is painfully written...\r more

We have been eating here for years and 4/25/2012

We have been eating here for years and always enjoyed it until recently. The people at the front are always playing on their electronics and can't seem to get an order right. They were rude when I called them to tell them they got my order wrong. The food quality is also a hit and miss anymore. Time to find a new favorite chinese food restaurant! more

Stay away! Poor quality chinese food!! 3/16/2012

Stay away! Poor quality chinese food!! Expensive and awful! more

Terrible 12/4/2011

We ordered three main dishes. One had the worst scallops I've ever seen, tiny and overcooked pieces of rubber. One of the three dishes was acceptable but not good, the rest was the worst Chinese food I have ever ordered and for about double the price of any random Chinese place. When you pay over $40 for crap Chinese that tastes like it came out of a can, it causes people to write bad reviews. Oh, even the side of fried rice was awful. How does a Chinese place screw up fried rice? By making it just brown rice from soy sauce. No egg, no vegetation and of course no nice pork pieces. I had heard that this restaurant was good, it has either drastically changed or they don't know what good Chinese is. I took the time to sign up and write this awful review because I feel we were utterly ripped off of over $40. We worked hard yesterday and going out was our ""treat"" for our labor. Wish we had gone ANYWHERE else. There is great Indian food nearby, we should have gone there! Will never return to this place. more

Satisfies a craving 7/18/2011

Sometimes you just want to taste American Chinese food from the 50's and 60's. You get a craving for the tastes and sauces you grew up with -- sweet/sour sauce, Americanized dishes... and that is NOT a bad thing.Nothing is cutting edge here... just good old style Chinese food that taste the way you expect and want. The bar could use some updating and the landscape needs help to keep up, but still a good place to visit. Not authentic.. and far from being very ethnic, but just plain good. Not the type of food for the Chinese community ... but an honest meal that everyone can identify with and go back for more. more

Delicious food 11/2/2009

I LOVE their fried sesame chicken. It is the perfect match with the red sauce that goes with it. The combination dinners are really good, too. They give you a variety of choices to chose from. The waitresses are really friendly. They always have this really pretty smile on their face and they take orders really fast and efficient. I just love this place. Pros: Best fried sesame chicken in town more

Love this place 10/14/2009

It was my first time going to this place last week, and I loved their sesame chicken. I also like their house special fried rice. They are awesome. Talking about these dishes makes my mouth water. Pros: Spacious and friendly waitresses Cons: the air conditioning can be a little too much more

What a wonderful place 7/29/2009

I have been to this restaurant for the past 5 years and I have been loving it. There food keep drawing me back there even though I live all the way in Portland. Their food is fantastic. I especially like to order their eggrolls, pork fried rice and medallion beef. The beef is really tender and their eggrolls are big and delicious. All the waitresses there are really nice, especially the main waitress lady. They recently remodeled the bathroom, and it looks good. Pros: wonderful food and nice waitresses Cons: The hostess more

Good food 7/25/2009

The fried chicken and Shrimp are the best with their special red sauce. Their fried stuff are freshly made, unlike other restaurants where they just reheat the fried foods. Also I love their house special fried rice. One of the best fried rice I have ever had. Pros: Fried Chicken and Fried Shrimp Cons: environment a little too dim more

Wow this place was AWFUL 6/1/2009

From the outside you can see smushed, dingy stained curtains in the upstairs window--take that as a beware sign. Hopefully my review will help you decide to go somewhere else. I would rather eat MickeyD nuggets with sweet and sour sauce (which are horrible enough!) than ever go back to Golden Crown. The food was horrible, the presentation (dishes, arrangement, color) like a school cafeteria, and the place was DARK--you could barely see. My husband and I were very disappointed and want to share this so others wouldn't bother to waste a meal out here. Pros: horrible food Cons: easy to park--that's it more

Never know what to expect 3/23/2009

We'd been here a few times and food was pretty good. We usually order lemon chicken and almond chicken subgum chow mein with pan fried noodles. The 'hostess' has never been friendly but waitresses are pleasent and service was good. Twice, when getting food to go, we'd arrive home and discover there weren't any almonds on the chow mein. We went there Sat. night (3-21-09) to pickup a to go order. We'd decided to try pork egg foo young and our mainstay, almond chicken sub gum chow mein. The pork egg foo young was horrible, like ground up soy , texture of sawdust and glue! And our favorite chow mein was mostly celery. That is the last time they will disappont us. Now we are looking for a GOOD tasting Chinese place to eat in WA. county. Cons: Hostess and food more

One of the best chinese restaurants 12/10/2008

It is one of the best restaurant that I have been to. Don't let the price on the menu scare you. Though it may seemed expensive at first, but it is actually a decent price for the food. They give you a big portion for your money. The waitress are also very nice and the atmosphere is perfect. It has a retro elegance to it. I would highly recommand anyone who wants to experience a great atmosphere while dining on the delicious food. more

Bad Food, Bad serivce if you are Chinese, Bad food and Bad food 8/26/2008

If you are looking for something really look like American Chinese but not real Chinese (I am not talking about the food at all, only the look), you can come here. But if you are Chinese, please don't even think about coming here because they don't serve Chinese food (not at all Chinese food). It looks like Chinese food but taste really bad. I am a Cantonese and they claim to serve ""hong kong and Canton"" food. This is really bad since I never eat something so bad before. If you are really thinking about coming here and looking for American Chinese, panda express is better. Pros: Fake chinese decor Cons: very bad food more

I can't believe it's on this list at all!! 8/24/2008

My family went to this place because my niece remembered going when she was young. Oh YUCK! I should have guessed from the outside it would be bad. There are stained, disgusting curtains on the upper windows that probably have been there since the place was built. Then, upon reaching the front door, there was a side door opened with cardboard etc. spilling out from it. It reeked of stale smoke as we entered the main foyer. Still, I didn't want to dissapoint the other five people (three of whom were already seated) by leaving immediately, so I bravely led my husband and son in. We were seated in the way back so the smoke smell wasn't so bad. I had hope. I've seen commercials for this place recently and it looked yummy. We ordered from a lady who probably had worked there for many years, she was barely able to keep herself at our table long enough to take our orders, didn't even ask if we wanted beverages, I had to stop her from leaving in order to do so. My niece had to go the restroom, so I accompanied her. Holy smokes, too disgusting for words, peeling wallpaper and all. I cannot believe they are in business. After that I was scared to eat the food that was on it's way. The appetizers we ordered were greasy and bland. The food looked like it was all previously frozen. I barely ate a bite from each just to be sure I wasn't in a bad dream! It was expensive, gross, and tasteless. I will never return and even checked to see if they had complied with the food police, unfortunately they had not had an inspection recently. DON'T GO!! It's awful. more

The horror! The horror! 5/19/2008

After my experience at this restaurant, I feel compelled to tell others as a warning. Pros: Waitress was nice Cons: Food more

Have loved it for 25 years! 4/10/2008

We have been going to Golden Crown for over 25 years. We have gone with large parties (20 people), with kids, and as a couple. We have also gotten take-out MANY times. I love their Pork Fried Rice (I don't think it's dry, I think it is refreshingly NOT greasy), the sweet and sour sesame chicken, Subgum chowmein, and Fried Shrimp. My husband loves the General Tso's Chicken, mandarin chicken and the potstickers. In reading most of the other reviews, it appears that people love it or hate it. WE LOVE IT! I will say that their biggest negative is the smokey smell. We frequently order take-out so that we don't smell like an ashtray when we leave. Otherwise, I think the atmosphere is quiet and peaceful. Most of the employees have all worked there more than the 25 years we have been going. Pros: Food Cons: smoke smell more

Grrreat food! 10/15/2006

This restaraunt makes my mother's favorite Chinese food and, well, mine too. Apparently a ton of other people like it too, because the parking lot is almost always full. The fried rice is not greasy (other people here have said it's dry, but probably because they're accustomed to greasy fried rice), the barbeque pork (and everything else I've tried) is superb. The french fries are obviously what you could get in the freezer section of any grocery store, but hey, it's a Chinese restaurant! Eat the chinese food! Pros: Great food, quiet setting. Cons: A little spendy, but not too bad considering the portions. more

The best Chinese you will ever have 8/24/2006

This is my favorite restaurant, hands down. When I have Chinese elsewhere, it does not compare. The service is excellent, and I love the atmosphere--mellow and comfortable, but classy at the same time. Pros: EXCELLENT food, karaoke, service Cons: Not on a good bus line. more

Great food and Great lounge 10/3/2005

I have only eaten in the lounge which I like very much. If you like combination dinners this place takes the cake. The portions are big and the food is hot and very fresh. Pros: Great food, Lounge, Service Cons: Price more

don't waste your money 8/6/2005

This is the worst chinese restaurant I've ever been. I've gone there 3 times, tried different (chinese) food, and they were either okay or way below average. One night for their karaoke, and our french fries were one of those freezer-to-oven crinkle cut fries, served pretty cold and soggy. Don't go there for food...you've probably had better at another restaurant. Pros: karaoke Cons: bad food more
