Bad Eats "en croute" 9/26/2010

If overpriced, inferior quality ingredients, poorly prepared, served with a doze of snobbism, in a pretentious atmosphere, is what you are looking for, Georges' is for you. The bread basket was visually stunning, and if all we desired was to bask in it's beauty, it would have been great, unfortunately we were hungry. The bread was hard and dry. The "epis", (wheat stalk shaped loaves), were so hard, you could have broken a tooth, if you foolishly attempted to bite into one. The bread was served with only an oil dispenser, that did not dispense. No herbs, no seasonings, no salt or pepper. The dinner itself was also unpalatable. There were three of us, all the dishes were loaded with salt. We actually love salty foods, but these courses were way too salty, even for us. My soft-shell crab, that I normally love, was smothered in blue cheese. Not only all you could taste was the blue cheese, no taste of crab left, but it had soaked, and moistened the soft-shell, making it tough and un-chewable. The steak and frittes, was a small, inexpensive, half gristle, cut of meat, served with greasy fries. The New York strip, was small, salty, like everything else, and cooked well, opposed to medium rare as requested. Dessert, was unremarkable at $9.00 each. The service was snobbish and un-warm. Even though two thirds of our meals were left unconsumed, we were never asked if the meals met with our satisfaction. I don't understand the good reviews! High prices do not guarantee a good repast! Are the high prices, snobby waiters and pompous surroundings, deluding the clientele into thinking they had a good meal? I am in my middle fifties, and have been lucky enough to enjoy meals all over the world, some fabulously wonderful, some not so great. I've had top quality, and humble ingredients, both expertly prepared. I have learned long ago, not to equate price with quality. Georges' will go down in my culinary experience, as one of the worst value, incompetently prepared meals, I have ever had the displeasure of partake of. We left unsatisfied, unhappy, puzzled by the good reviews attributed to this restaurant. Maybe they were having a bad day? Maybe the chef was on vacation? Maybe the salt shaker just slipped of his fingers, it will remain an unsolved mystery. We, will never know, go back to Georges', or recommend it to any of our friends and family. Our enemies, if we had any, now that, is a different story. more

Lovely Experience! 1/3/2008

My husband & I went to George's for our anniversary. After reading the reviews of others on this site I was worried, but my fears were unfounded. Perhaps the staff is now better trained - but we had a lovely young (well, late 20's/early 30's) waiter who was very professional and knowledgable about the menu and wine. We started with the tuna cappchio (sp?) - which was wonderful and fresh. I had the salmon and my husband had the rib steak - both cooked to perfection. I worried that the salmon would be heavy b/c it is listed as being "poached" in olive oil - but just a wondful flavor and not greasy as I feared. We both enjoyed a side pear salad that was dressed with a tasty vinegrette (my favorite part of the meal). Not big portions but not skimpy either. All of the sides are ala carte, so our bill, with wine, ran about $125 - but we had a delightful experience and plan to return soon. Pros: Great food, nice staff, not overly casual - just nice and relaxing! Cons: Everything is ala carte for the most part more

Not very good 7/31/2007

I went to George's this evening with some business colleagues for dinner. The bar area is very nice and my drink was prepared adequately. There were butlered appetizers while we waited for our table. I ordered the Tomato and Mozzarella salad which was more lettuce than Tomato. I have ordered many Tomato and Mozzarella salads and this was by far the worst I have ever had. I was expecting (so was my colleague) large slices of beefsteak tomato with slices of mozzarella. This salad was mostly green with chunks of ?marinated? tomato with crumbled mozzarella on top. I really did not enjoy it. It also came with a piece of crouton which was tasteless. I ordered the scallops with grilled veggies. The scallops were acceptable however the grilled vegetables did not have a good flavor. My dessert (the chocolate cake) was good but nothing special. I was really disappointed at this award winning chef?s restaurant. Pros: Ambience, nice bar Cons: Unprofessional waitstaff (young inexperienced), good just ok more

Nice settings but anyone can make better food 7/27/2007

I took my wife for lunch to Georges'. I had read a very positive review in a magazine and I expected this to be a very memorable experience. The surroundings and dining room are very pleasant and that added to our expectations. We started by sharing a caesar salad which was good. The dressing was slightly different and the crostini was a pleasant change from the standard croutons. For the entree, I ordered a hanger steak medium-well. The steak that they served me was well-done to charred and the portion was extremely small for the $19 price. My wife and I both thought that the french fries ("pommes frites") were overseasoned and had us reaching for water. The sauce on the steak was a good reduction. My wife ordered the penne with chicken. The chicken was extremely soft but unfortunately so were the penne. My wife's comment was that they were softer than the penne we make for our 20-month old daughter. The penne was either precooked which would be a crime for such a restaurant or it was made to order and overcooked by the chef. At any rate, my wife who is pregnant and has a healthy appetite only ate half of the penne in her plate. This might explain the low rating that we gave. We ordered the $11 chocolate signature cake and we both agreed that it was very tasty. We paid $81 for lunch without any wine and we shared an appetizer and a dessert. We don't mind paying for good food but we can't help but think that this restaurant is nothing but a rip-off. more

Excellent Sunday Brunch 6/2/2007

In May, we were a party of 30! We sat in the Garden Room. It was so open with natural sunlight coming in through the windows. The brunch was the creme de la creme. What a great choice! The Penne pasta sauteed with some grilled chicken and alfredo sauce was delish. At the omelet station, an egg white omelet with mushrooms, cheese and everthing else you can put into it, was so yummy. You can't get a breakfast this good anywhere. Before coming to Georges', La Croix's brunch was our favorite. But Georges' had an array of breakfast and lunch items that were more appealing to a large group like ours. Some of our younger family members actually found this brunch more to their liking. Our waiter was always around filling coffee or getting us mimosas. The homemade chocolate ice cream with the chocolate chips in it was great. The staff were friendly and helpful. One of those chefs doing the cooking out front was total eye candy. Pros: accommodates large parties more

Comfortable casual atmosphere, where you can feel at home 10/31/2006

I'm a georges' fan an regular. I eat there at least three nights of the week. I'm writing this not rave about the food and service you recieve there I believe excellence speaks for itself. This is for all the idiots who use Le Bec Fin as a point of reference. Chef Perrier created george's to be a casual, relaxed friendly atmosphere. It's not supposed to have the aire of a 5 star Le Bec Fin, but the feeling of dining at that comfortable neighborhood restaruant. If you want the service of Le Bec then go to Le Bec, george's is advertised as casual, with the love in the food you expect from a brilliant Chef like Georges' Perrier, and that's what they deliver. Pros: The list is too long to go into Cons: It's not Le Bec, but it's not supposed to be more

Food is okay. People watching place if you are at all interested at the Mainliners... 9/19/2006

Went there because I heard the bouillabaisse is supposed to be fanastic, the answer is no really. The broth is too salty and the service is average. We dined at the "bar" side, not the dining room but I believe the food are prepared from the same kitchen. The pizza my wife ordered was quite good though. Seating is cozy especially if you are close to the fire place. It's a pick up joint and people watching place, if you want to see how mainliners behave, go there for a drink. =) Pros: Nice fireplace, good pizza Cons: Very salty bouillabaisse. more

Stay away until they bring in professionals. 8/11/2006

Georges' just made a lasting impression by giving me the worst dining expreience I have ever had. I ate there 2 years ago (when it was La Mas Perrier) and for as professional the service was then, it is completely amateur. It seemed as though I was educating the waiter about their food and wine. The entire staff appeared apathetic and apathy is not what you want when paying $400 for dinner. The misery of poor, inattentive service outweighs the quality of the food. more

User review by gantrioch 2/12/2006

I just got back from my first visit to georges' and I have to say, I was impressed. There is no dress code; I was dressed "casually." However, I also noticed that the crowd is older (we were the youngest people there and I'm twenty-five!) and most of them were dressed "nicely." The restaurant was bustling, perhaps because of it being Friday night and because of the Valentine's menu. We were offered a choice of iced water, bottled distilled water, or sparkling water, which I appreciated. My filet de beouf was cooked exactly medium rare and my dining companion's lamb was excellent, according to him. The service was above average, even considering how busy it was. Unlike some other people, I don't expect "Le Bec Fin service" from a restaurant which bills itself as "casual," which georges' does. All in all, I recommend georges'. more

friendly bartenders 9/24/2005

i enjoy going after work and feeling welcomed by bartenders whether i am by myself or with friends. i have enjoyed the pizzas, burgers, and ambience many times. Pros: friendly, atttentive bartenders, happy hour more

Less Than Expected 4/30/2005

The service was average and bland which pretty much mimicked the food. After eating at Le Bec Fin a number of years ago (before being owned by George), I am disappointed that Georges is in the same family. The ambiance is perfect for a date or romantic refresher, however, keep in mind the food will disappoint. Pros: Inexpensive, Ambiance Cons: Bland Food, Average Service more

How are you guys ? 3/5/2004

That was the greeting that my wife, son and I received from our waiter after we were seated. I wondered if this is how lunch guests are welcomed at Le Bec-Fin, Georges Perriers restaurant in Philadelphia? (We were the guys throughout our meal.) Maybe Im a snob; Im not surprised to hear this in chain restaurants but at a fine dining establishment? But on to more serious matters - Lunch. The menu was varied and quite reasonable, with entrees averaging around $13.00. The shared Baked Gnocchi Parisienne with mushrooms was very good, as was the Salad Nicoise entree. The Baked Salmon over Wild Rice was very very light, helped along by using some of the horseradish mayonnaise that accompanied Georges Famous Cheese Steak (good but not as good as Jims Steaks on South Street !) For the above and 5 beers, the bill came to $75 before tip. Pros: Nice setting, Resaonable lunch $$ more

Yikes...trainwreck. 12/11/2003

Please keep in mind my review is based on one experience for a private party held at Le Mas. I hope this is not true for the restaurant. Ok, where do I start? No heat on the second floor, freezing! Menu choice was sirloin steak! The steak was all fat, and no one ate it. Several around me even sent it back. Creme Brulee was fabulous, minus the fact we had to eat it with forks. Coffee service was put out before dessert, but not served until long after we finished. Manager was acting as busboy and clearing dishes (could have been due to the snowy day). All in all, I was really shocked and will not go there again. On a positive note, they have a great lounge dining area. There was a fire going and it was very warm and comfortable. I suggest lounge seating, coupled with dessert! Pros: Fabulous Desserts, Comfy Ski Lounge Area Cons: Horrendous Service, Sirloin Steak? more

Service not to high standards 12/23/2002

While the food at Le Mas Perrier has always been of the highest quality, we were surprised by inadroit service at lunch, starting by a long wait at the front door, although the restaurant was not half full. Our waiter disappeared for long periods of time, and had to be asked to fill my wife's water glass, then had to be called back to fill mine though both were empty. Not good enough when your bill is $50 before tip for lunch. more

The food is great 10/23/2002

Be sure to try the dessert, even for lunch. Soups are also a specialty. more

  • In Short
Chef Georges Perrier's suburban digs are posh, from the French tiles in the bar to the "P" monogrammed onto the chair backs. Still, there's a prefab feeling. Maybe it's the shopping center setting--something seems to whisper, "Joe Millionaire was here." Menu options range from a three-course lunch to an extravagant shrimp cocktail. But price doesn't dictate taste, so head for entrees like luscious duck over polenta, or earthy black bass swathed in fresh basil.
