I finally had my appointment with the all famous Joe Hamer. What a sweet heart he is. Never did I expected him to be so down to earth and kind. My hair looks fabulous and my self esteem got a boost. To my surprise in these difficult times, this salon was filled with clientele. In this open space, you can see everything and it is so wonderful to see so many happy faces walking around with beautiful hairstyles. Pros: knowledgeable Cons: do not know more

The minute I walked in I felt a wonderful energy. Greeted with a warm welcome from start to finish my husband and I have never experienced such a caring, refreshing, uplifting feeling inside and out from just going to get our hair done! My husband is a no fuss no maintence kind of guy and wasn't to sure about what was going to happen. Joe brought my husband's inner beauty to an outer beauty that took years off his age. He now looks younger, healthier, and happier, with a fantastic low maintence hair style! I can't stop here I must say whatever they did to his face it is wonderful - as soft as a babies butt.\r Ok enough about my husband who is now my prince charming it's onto my experience. I have long curly permed hair and needed a different look for my dinner date with my husband. I had no idea what I wanted just knew it had to be different. I did not have a lot of time and Joe had two of his stylist hot iron wide curls, OMG these ladies were great! Then Joe took over and styled my hair into soft, long, bouncy, silky cork curls, a few hair pins here and there uplifting the back a little- it was fabulous! Then another gal did my makeup- wow is she great! Once again I had no idea what I wanted and left it up to her to do as she pleased. Inside I was thinking I should have said I don't want to have makeup pasted on and thick. When she was done I looked in the mirror and was extremely happy to see a new face staring back at me. The makeup was beautiful, elegant, I wish I could have her do my makeup everyday! I could go on but I think you get the picture. Joe Hamer Salon is great for people of all ages, styles, the adventurous and not so adventurous. I use to live in San Francisco and thought all the best salons were there, untill my husband and I found Joe Hamer's Salon. Now we make a date of it and are regulars. The moment you walk in the door, You're their top priority and they welcome you with kindness and refreshments. Best of all, they listen to your needs and take care of you. In SF, my husband use to jump from salon to salon with a bad hair cut. Now he always has a handsome and stylish cut, thanks to Vanessa. My hair always looks glamorously soft, shiney and ready to go, thanks to Shauna's. Also, thanks to Tom I have top of the line hair products at reasonable prices. WOW, I LOVE my new haircut. JoeHamer salon is fantastic, from the moment you walk through the door, to selecting tea, to the very thorough consultation, this place is tops. It was a pleasure to step into a place that was so welcoming and professional. \r \r I have white hair and wish to wear it natural and have struggled for years to find a haircut that compliments my hair color. I was hesitant to go to this salon because I was under the mistaken impression that they would try to push haircoloring on me. This did not happen at all, I was made to feel very comfortable with my natural hair color with several hairstylists commenting on what cool hair I had, they MADE MY DAY!\r Ladies with gray, white or silver hair who do not wish to color their hair, you should NOT be afraid to go to this salon.\r \r April must have spent well over an hour with me. She was very thorough, very talented, very professional and so much fun to be with. I was so happy to see that Joe Hamer Salon was listed on City Search. If you love your hair and want the best, Joe Hamer is your spot. I found Joe Hamer when I needed to get my prior hairdo ""fixed"". Regina refused to give me the permanent I was asking for (bless her heart! xox) and instead cut my hair exactly the way it needed to be cut to pull the curl life back into my hair. Just recently I had to ""pop in"" for New Year's Eve hair color, Regina was on vacation, and there was no way in H*LL I was going somewhere else! Justine took care of me like I was her regular client. Now, I literally walk in and tell Regina to do whatever magic she does and each time, I walk out feeling like a million bucks and looking twice as fine. I have never been happier with my hair as I am now. Regina, Justine, Patrick, everyone at Joe Hamer... TOP NOTCH! If you are tired of looking for a salon to call home, Joe Hamer is your spot. It's shocking to me to read some reviews that are so negative when all I have are positive things to say about Joe Hamer Salon. There are different levels of stylists ranging from academy (licensed beginners) to master (been doing hair for a while), so you can have someone who suits your needs, and your budget. I have had an amazing experience with any stylist I have ever gone to at this salon. I also love how they offer an array of drinks and have a comfy waiting area....which I haven't experienced at other salons. This salon is far better than many of the salons I have tried in the Bay Area. I highly recommend this salon to anyone, no matter your hair type, Joe Hamer Salon stylists will make you look fabulous! I understand some of the favorable reviews on these type of websites are sometimes requested by the establishment to be done. So you need to have a checklist of what you need and want from this salon AND know who you're going to before hand. Know or find a way to hold the hairdresser or salon responsible for what has been done. Ask questions and have them tell you exactly what they're doing. Otherwise your head/hair is theirs (which it isn't!) while you're sitting there. Cutting hair should be a science and done correctly if they know what they're doing! You don't have to pay for their mistakes, just leave. You could be the next one to bite your lip and never return! Like me... Pros: location Cons: everything but Joe Hammer more

I have been a client at Joe Hamer Salon for the past year thanks to Tom's great stylist recommendations. I have always been amazed on the high customer service and the positive environment. I was recently disappointed during a couple appointments when I saw an employee and the way she would talk to her co-workers. It's disappointing to have such a great salon but one person with such a poor attitude. I come to relax and get my hair done because I feel at home. My stylist isnt far from Laura's chair so I unfortunately have to hear the pour language. This employee on many ocassions has raised her voice (sometimes using inapropriate language) to other employees and obviously upset them enough that they had to leave their duties. My concern is one day this employee is going to effect the way my stylist does her job and I wont get my usual amazing service. Other than that I highly recommend this salon. The work they do is beautiful and you will always leave happy. more

Joe Hammer needs to take more control of how his salon is managed. The hair ""designers"" are inadequate and sending people off with very bad cuts. My hair was ""chopped"" after I asked for a trim by way of a professional blunt cut. Instead I got whacked, my hair was beautiful - thick and long but needed a trim. How the hell did I end up with this ridiculous uneven choppy weird haircut is beyond me. I was very clear in my communication and also had a photo to help convey what I wanted. The problem is these hairdressers at Joe Hammer are not trained adequately and overdo hair - too much cutting or to much whatever they're doing, instead of being more cautious and asking the customer if it is okay for them to start doing what they're doing - more details from the hairdresser can prevent a lot of upset and tears. To make matters even worse, I'm not sure what hair color and process was used, but half my hair went down the drain and is so choppy and thin now. I called and spoke to Tom the manager to see if Joe Hammer can take a look at my haircut, just to go over it. Tom said nothing doing to to go someplace else. I'm screwed for at least a year's time because of what his ""senior designer"" did to me and God forbid if someone says, ""we're sorry you're right let's see what Joe Hammer has to say about how to rectify or plan out the growth and correction of your hair."" This is too much accountabillity and maturity for this salon. Just B-E-W-A-R-E of this place. Joe Hammer's name doesn't mean much to those who rent space or manage this salon. There are many salons in petaluma but not many good ones. Joe Hammer salon puts on a big show but my experience with them was very average and I was charged $190 for a cut and color. I thought about that and called that evening and told them I thought that was a pretentious price - their manager said that ""I got a steal"" because normally they charge $120 for a cut and a minimum of $155 for highlites. \r If people are willing to pay that then I understand why they charge that but that's amazing to me. My normal stylists is far more impressive than the girl I went (who was still good) but charges $135.\r Additionally, she did a poor job with the high-lites. They look good on top but there are ""bleach lines"" underneath - something that ""amateur"" stylits often do with thicker hair or curly hair when they're not careful. \r You can go to this salon and you're hair will probably be done well but there are salons that are just as good (better in my case) who charge $45 - $75 less for the same quality. I am still really uncomfortable with how much I paid and can't belive that they would charge that and not, at the very least, do a perfect job. In both my experiences at this salon it has been more show than quality. If you are someone who doesn't know what a good salon is then they'll have you fooled in apperance but if you know a good salon i'm not sure youll be as impressed with this salon as they are hoping you'll be. Pros: easy to get an appointment and they probably won't screw up Cons: big fish in a little pond - pretentious prices - there are better salons in the area more

I just got highlights from Regina, an absolutely amazing stylist!! \r \r The salon is roomy and the chairs are comfy....and the glass of wine was greatly appreciated after a long day at work! ;)\r \r Regina understood EXACTLY what I wanted and even gave me her email address so I could send photos the week before! The salon is very comfortable and everyone is all-smiles. This is my first time going to a salon out of San Francisco and I will DEFINATELY be a returning client of Regina's! She made the time just fly by and I never questioned anything she was doing. Her prices are EXTREMELY reasonable for the quality of work and attention to detail. I felt confident and beautiful when I left her chair.\r \r Petaluma now holds a special place in my heart :) THANK YOU REGINA & JOE HAMER SALON! I have finally found my salon. At joe hamers the place has this acamdey program that is fantastic. I was overdue for a haircut and was looking like Grizzly Adams with the hair and beard out of control. I went in and the place is pretty up tempo and everyone that works there is friendly and very helpful. I saw the stylist named lauren and she asked me what i had in mind for my haircut and I told her that she is the stylist, to have at it, and make me look good. So she cleaned me up and pretty quick too! The best part about it was that is was only 35 dollars. I love this salon do to that I went in looking like grizzly Adams and came out looking ten years younger and feeling good about myself... who new that i could clean up this good... thanks to lauren. But the over all experince was great and the best part about this place is that you get a high dollar haircut for next to nothing so if you need a haircut or new style go to joe's. more

I had the worst haircut of my life at Joe Hamer. One of the students butchered my hair with electric shears when I asked for a simple trim. I have straight long hair so it is surprising that anyone could ruin my hair so badly, but he did. There was absolutely no style to the cut and it was uneven. In addition, I asked him to take off about an inch and he cut three inches off, he cut uneven layers that are randomly about 2 inches shorter than the rest of my hair, he left the front with blunt edges and did not trim the split ends as I asked. After I left the salon, almost in tears, I called to have someone with experience fix the completely botched haircut. When I returned 3 hours later, my hair was re-cut by another student who did a horrible job again. After 20 minutes of suffering through the second cut where she tried to soften the first haircut, I had her stop and just walked out of the salon, as I didn?t want her to make my hair look any worse. \r \r I have been getting my hair cut at Joe Hamer for over 2 years and have had good cuts by former students but I am shocked that they would employ the people who cut my hair the last time and that they would let these students cut hair with no oversight by experienced stylists. I am also appalled that when I called to have the first haircut fixed, I was given to another student. \r \r I understand that student haircuts are not the same level of expertise as stylists, but I don?t think there could be anything worse for business than a customer leaving the salon completely horrified with their haircut, no matter who cut their hair. I was discussing my experience with a close friend who told me that she had an even worse experience when the same student cut her hair. more

As before mentioned, the academy program at this salon is great. A friend of mine recomended i try it out, so i scheduled an appointment on a sunday (what salons do you know that are open sunday?). The girl that cut my hair rules!! Super friendly, and really listened to what i had to say. I have some crazy cowlicks, and she knew just what to do with them. She was stoked to inform me of their new product line, and sent me home with some of the conditioning balm. I usually just buy or what ever at the grocery store, but lets just say this stuff is so good that between my mom, sisters and i, we've almost used it all up. Kristen is totally knowledgeable and knows what looks good and will be honest about what doesnt. She gave me the best haircut i've had in a long time. Not only was she professional and precise, but it almost felt like i was hanging out talking to a friend rather than having my hair done. It was fun. Pros: Nice people, Cool cut. I explained what I wanted and she was totally in tune and gave me a fabulous cut. I liked the cut so much I had her \r cut my kids hair. I will be referring people to Kristen. Great attitude just a joy to be around. She aims to please. That means a lot to me. Kristen loves her job and it shows. I absolutely loved this salon!! for a college student like myself it is so hard to find a high quality salon while still being within my budget! At Joe Hamer they have the academy program which basically means they have licensed stylist going through the training program personally taught by Joe, and if you get your hair done by them it is only $35! and you get the most amazing cut and wonderful, attentive service! I had Eliza from the academy, and she was great! i loved my cut, she listened to exactly what i wanted, and it is rare to find someone who listens and see your same vision! i totally recommend this salon for everyone, they have a stylist for every budget!
