OK but There Are Better 7/3/2009

El Charro is a decent Mexican restaurant. The food is OK but not great. It is often very busy so you may have to wait a while to get a table (especially on weekends). All in all, there are better choices around (Azteca, for instance) but you can do OK at El Charro. more

El Charro's Mexican Restaurant 7/8/2008

Their mexican soft shell tacos are the best I have had thus far in Michigan. I have been to many mexican restaurants, and none compare to it. Their enchiladas have a gravy sauce instead of the typical red sauce, that is unique. You can also buy their chips and salsa and make your own bean & cheese nachos. Enjoy! more

What happened?? 4/7/2008

This used to be a favorite of mine.\r NOT ANYMORE! I think something was changed in the way the food is prepared...it just dosen't taste the same. The crunchy taco shells have a funny taste now. The chips seem too thin and have a smell, like preservatives or something. I used to take all my out of town friends here in the past. I honestly cannot recommend it now. I actually drive over to Shelby Twp. now, or head down to Mexicantown for better tasting food. Cons: Food has changed for the worse more

Love those shells!! Unique! 3/19/2008

I love the soft shells...can't get anything like them anywhere else I have been. The margarita swirl is awesome. I prefer the Fraser location, every time I go to the St Clair Shores location they screw up my order or don't give me utensils or something like that! Of course, like everything the price is going up and the portions size down. And I agree with the other comment that the ""nachos"" that come with a dinner are a joke. 4 chips with a sprinkle of cheese? Nachos? Not. Pros: Unique soft shells. Cons: Tiny little ""nachos"" that come with dinner. more

bad 5/5/2007

The prices keep on going up but the quality keeps going down. Now I can see how they afforded a new location. We used to love them- they had good tacos and were a good value- not any more. We just ate there and truly wish we could get our 50 bucks back for our flavorless food and slow service. more

Simply the best mexican 5/2/2007

The food is great, prices reasonable and nice atmosphere - of course it's busy! I don't care for the soft shell tacos, but I'm the only one I know who doesn't. Pros: Food, price, atmosphere Cons: Busy on weekends more

Lousy Mexican Food. 12/30/2006

Friends are always dragging me to this place, and I can't take it any more!! I just don't get it. What's the big draw. You can get better Mexican food than this just about anywhere!! The food is substandard, the sauce is watery, the soft tacos that everyone crave are doughy. The quesadillas and enchiladas are packed with gooey, flavorless cheese. And what's with the those four chips that are glued to the plate that they so generously offer to you as Nachos. Nasty. I really need to drink to get any enjoyment from this place. You truely can do better in metro Detroit. Please don't waste your time here. Cons: Everything more

no warm chips.. 11/15/2006

i'm from California where they have REAL MEXICAN food and i guess it doesn't get much better than this out here in detroit.. Unfortunately , go to CAL and see how to make REAL mexican food.. their chips are NOT warm the way they SHOULD BE .. if you cant even warm chips ... jjjeeeezzzz??? Pros: its about as good as it gets..?? Cons: its detroit. more

Once great - now just average 11/2/2006

I've been eating here since the late 70's and it was great. The last couple years have been a disapointment. I used to go every Sunday, now I go maybe once every 6 months! The beef is usually so salty we can barely eat it, the salads are half what they used to be. They used to give you the salsa in a 16 oz. squeeze bottle, now they give a couple tiny cups and give you a hard time if want more. Prices went up, sizes went way down. Pretty soon they will be able to put the combination meal on 1 plate. I now prefer El Sombrero on 13 mile in Warren. What a shame, I guess greed took over. Pros: Easier to get in now, lines are shorter, less people Cons: Taste has gone way down, No longer a good value for the money more

Worse Mexican , Avoid 8/19/2006

Went there on Aug 20 at 5:30 pm , no trouble getting a seat, but food was Awful, chips were stale, salad was waterloged and the one drink I ordered could knock out a horse! Pros: good seats Cons: bad food more

Best Mexican fare in the whole Dtroit area, and farther!! 7/8/2006

Bland? You had two too many Sangrias.!!! This is without a doubt the best place Ive had Mexican fare in the U.S. and and most of Mexico. Of course we all like what we get used too, and I have been going there a long time. Since Dee got involved after Connie sold it.( 1972 )i The soft shell tacos are often imitated but no one has ever been able to get that taste and texture just right. Great portions, the best in the business. Best value for the buck and great service too. Gonna go get me a Taco fix right now!!! more

Since Childhood 5/27/2006

I have to say I have been going to El Charros since I was alittle kid; a little hole in the wall behind a comic store. The taste back then was great. The food had flavor and had a hole differant type of ambient. Nohw since the original owners ave past away and the family have inherited the resturant and now the food is nothing to be desiered. One word to say is BLAND. When I want Mexican food I want the flavors to explode in my mouth like it is suppose to. Not anymore from El Charros. I will head to south Detroit for my Mexican love of food. more

GREAT Value for the $ 5/16/2006

After getting Chips and Salsa when we sat down, we looked at the menu and noticed the prices were not too bad. We ordered a regular quesadilla (which really was much to be desired - way too much cheese...and I love cheese!), but it was decent sized. Then our order came....which came with soup, salad or nachos and cheese.....wow.....needless to say I needed two boxes to take home....EXCELLENT Pros: Inexpensive, Ambiance, Godd food portions Cons: Quesadilla more

Great Mexican 4/25/2006

Although I don't dine here too often, they have great food. My favorite Mexican restaurant since Chi-Chi's closed. The prices are good, the atmosphere is friendly and the employees are great. I have never had a bad experience yet. more

The Best 2/26/2006

I have yet to find a mexican restaurant any better than El Charros. more

love love love it 2/7/2006

el charro has been on my list of best restaurants since I was a little girl. when i was growing up i lived across the street from the 1st el charros in fraser on utica rd. I couldnt even tell you how many people I added to there fan club. PROS: best mexican food in town CONS: always too busy on the weekends more

Excellent Mexican Food-I love it! 1/6/2006

El Charros of Fraser, Michigan is my favorite Mexican Restaurant. The chicken quesadillas, chicken w/rice soup and soft tacos are my favorite . I cannot find any other Mexican Resaurant with chicken quesadillas as tasty as they are at El Charros of Fraser, Michigan. The cheese, chicken, chips, salsa and beef are terrific and full of taste. They also have daily drinks specials. I love the Margaritas...refreshing and full of flavor. I highly recommend you go and try the Mexican food and you will agree with me!!\r \r \r Pros: Great Food, Excellent Atmosphere, Cheap Eats Cons: Absolutely no Cons.... more

Wont be back 12/5/2005

The place itself is nice. But the food is lacking. Extremely bland, both the beef and the chicken. The tacos I make at home have more flavor. Both the beef and chicken taste void of any seasoning whatsoever. I agree with the statement above, save youe money and head to Taco Bell. Pros: nice decor, promptservice Cons: bland food, bland food, bland food more

EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT 11/19/2005

Oh my goodness, talk about getting a lot for your money. Huge servings, friendly service, and a really comfortable dining experience. I usually have children with me and they are very accomidating. No problems here...and full bellies. more

Best soft tacos anywhere 11/13/2005

We have been eating at El Charros for over 30 years. We now live in Oklahoma but we visit our daughter once a year, and a take out order of soft tacos is always scheduled for one night. I have eaten Mexican in California, Arizona, Texas, Michigan and Oklahoma and have not had comparable soft tacos anywhere else. Pete's subs are also on our schedule when we're in the area. more
