drake diner 1/1/2010

Been there many times over the years and always got great food, good service and excellent atmosphere. Since it is in the Drake University neighborhood it occassionally packed after sporting events but by in large, excellent choice. Anyone who dosen't like the diner can't be pleased. more

Are you kidding me 3/6/2008

I remember going to this place about 10 years ago, and the food was great, and the service was pretty decent. Now, both the food and service are terrible. First of all, whomever the two non-waiter/waitresses who run the front are completely unfriendly. The tall woman with the short hair, and black bakelite glasses is detached and barely makes eye contact with customers. She seems almost angry that you're ASKING her to ring you up, so you can PAY HER money. Bleh. And the middle-aged guy (who I think is the owner) is gregarious, loud, and inappropriate. The other day he was talking about which Drake Volleyballers were "hot". Disgusting. They strike you as tweedle detached and tweedle a-hole. The wait staff is terrible too. They seem like they're depressed or something. They never smile, they hardly bring water, and they take forever to get to you after you sit down. And then, they don't know anything about the menu. I asked one of them at lunch today what was on the roast beef melt, and she said "uhhh, roast beef, and cheese". I said, "what kind of cheese", she said "I don't know". The sandwich came not only with roast beef and cheese (crappy american cheese), but came with ONIONS! I hate onions, and was told nothing about them. Idiots. The food is also terrible, too. The owners seem to have figured out that people (dumb people) will eat whatever crap is put in front of them, as long as they're sitting in a crappy 50s ripoff diner. Oreida crinkle fries, iceberg lettuce, american cheese, watered-down coke, and pre-formed hamburgers are all common fare at the illustrious Drake Diner. Honestly. The only decent thing is a malt, as it's pretty hard to mess something like that up. Terrible, awful, not worth it. If you have standards higher than a country kitchen salad bar, this place will not work out for you. p.s. the chairs are tiny, and the booths are even tiny-er. more

In an area void of diners this is a great place to go... 4/1/2006

I love diners, and Des Moines doesn't seem to have a lot of them. One reason I like going to the Drake Diner. The food is very good, whether it be for breakfast, lunch or dinner. They always have some type of special. Keep your eyes on the paper too, for $5 off coupons appar every so often. I'm old fashioned and love to just get a burger and fries. Though I've found their steamed veggies to be delicious as well. There desserts are good and very filling. You should not be leaving this place hungary. The prices are great, very affordable, good for college students too. more

Old Fashioned Diner 8/17/2005

The Drake Diner is a great casual place to go and eat. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The atmosphere is fun and laid back, in a 1950's style. Their milkshakes are wonderful (my favorite is the chocolate/carmel/peanut butter) and the food is simple but very good. They have burgers and sandwiches and also dinner specials too. A friendly wait staff tops it off. And they are the only restaurant I've found in a long time that has Diet Dr Pepper-definitely worth going there for me! more

Great place for lunch 7/28/2005

This is a well-known establishment near Drake University. They have a great breakfast menu ... including a weekend buffet. They also have lunch specials and serve dinner. It's a typical 50s-theme diner, with traditional and more modern fare. My favorite is the Chicken Jack Salad with poppyseed dressing. If you're going for lunch, get there early or you'll have to wait. They have indoor seating and a screened-in patio. more
