From a REAL New Yorker 11/6/2009

I can clearly tell that anyone calling this place NY-style or ""authentic"" has never truly visited New York (or at least not a good deli there). Having grown up and spent my entire life in New York prior to coming out to Arizona to attend ASU (now finishing my last year!), AND being 100% Jewish, I am quite familiar with good Jewish NY food. Chompie's is simply a typical west coast mass-scale, imitation, chain restaurant like virtually all of the food in this state (i.e. Dilly's Deli, ANY Pizza, etc.) While I am not entirely discrediting the food as being terrible or anything, this is nothing like the food I have at home in any way. Just by looking at the menu you can tell how hard they desperately try to make you think they are traditionally New York with all their food items being named after areas is NY or overused yiddish words. I mean...is anyone who works there actually jewish? NO. The portions are big, which I like, and they have a huge menu so there are plenty of things to choose from, but they sure know how to over-salt just about everything they make. Their bagels are usually awful, unless you simply don't know better. Any time I have friends or family visiting from NY and have taken them to Chompie's, they are seriously disappointed. For those of you who are interested in trying REAL New York food, I strongly encourage you to make the trip to my home state and enjoy some of the best food on the planet. On almost every street is a real local deli where everything is prepared fresh. And to get the best bagel in the world, you must stop by H&H Bagels, where the bagels are freshly baked all day (not mass-produced in a warehouse and shipped to one of many locations like Chompie's). If you are craving Jewish food and don't know how to make it yourself, then this might be your best bet in Arizona, but if authenticity is what you're looking for, leave this state. Pros: Big portions Cons: In NO way authentic more

Don't Bother for eat or cater 6/11/2009

It wasn't that the food tasted so bad...as the fact I became down with a stomach flue shortly after eating there. I called them back and they referred me to the owner....I said the owners anyway.... And they acted like I was crazy. I wasn't going to report them!!! I only wanted them to know to save others the same fate. Never again....and I'll never use them to cater again. Cons: I got sick!! more

Bad Service 4/12/2009

I won't be going there again. My brother and I ate there recently and were both shocked at how we were treated. Something is not right with management if their training of staff is no better then this. The employees are obviously stressed and are not happy. Pros: Food Ok Cons: Employees have very bad attitude more

Worst Deli and Worst Value in the Valley 2/15/2009

We went for the Sweetheart Brunch for 2.. What a terrible terrible experience.. \r I wouldnt reccomend this place at all. Brunch consisted of one order of eggs benedict, 1 small crepe , 3 \r mini potato pancakes to share.. bagel was used in the eggs benedict un edible couldnt cut it with a knife, hard and chewy not for human consumption. \r I would be embarrassed to serve anything like this. \r Totally over price $26.00 with tax for one breakfast and one cup of coffee !!!!!! Yikes totally over rated Cons: bad service, bad food, bad value more

Best Breakfast In Town 6/4/2008

I don't know about lunch or dinner because all i tried from them is their breakfast i heard it was really good from a friend; and in fact it is really good the best place to go for breakfast. I highly recommend if you want a hearty breakfast Chompies is the place to go. Friendly staff and prices are average. No complaints here. I will be going here again you can bet on it. Pros: Good Food, Friendly Staff & Parking more

Paid $9 for chicken salad that had more than one bone in it. Meh. I'm required to write a review that is at least 100 characters. more

Never again! 10/21/2006

I was visiting from out of town and found this restaurant on-line. I called the Phoenix store and inquired if they had stuffed derma. The associate informed me that they did and when I told him where I was located, he informed me that I was much closer to the Tempe restaurant. I went to the Tempe location and when I asked the associate how many pieces of stuffed derma came in an order, he looked at me and it was obvious he did not know what I was talking about. He said he would ask someone and came back and told me his manager doesn't know what ""derma"" is. I explained that it was offered at the Phoenix restaurant and told him it was on the on-line menu. He said that the stores carry different items. Needless to say I was VERY disappointed. In addition, I ordered a corned beef and pastrami combo sandwich and when I returned to my hotel, found out that they only gave me corned beef. I was very excited to find a ""New York"" style deli and couldn't wait to have the stuffed derma. I was VERY disappointed with my experience. The Coney Knish was greasy and the rye bread was terrible. The only positive remark I have is that the chicken soup was excellent. Even the black and white cookie was stale. more

Authentic food and prices 8/7/2006

Good food, great soup and amazing desserts. But everything is about $2 too expensive. Pancakes and eggs should not be $8. Even if you add bacon. A SMALL CUP of matzo ball soup should not be $5. I just decided it's not worth it, and I can go somewhere else or make breakfast at home. Maybe their lunch is more reasonable. Pros: Food like back east... Cons: ...at New York prices more

just like home 8/20/2002

Reminds me of the deli's back home (in NY), with great bagels and pastries as well as sandwiches and traditional deli fare. more

Bagel heaven! 8/4/2002

Best bagels in Phoenix. These puppies are HUGE. Parking is great and everyone is nice. Genuinely nice. Bagels in all flavors. Pros: delicious, great parking, close to ASU more
