Ugh! 3/11/2004

A group of us dined at Carl's before going to see a show at the Mesonic Temple in Detroit. My food was excellent, I had the Duck, but everyone else at the table was completely unsatisfied with their food. Two of them ordered the small cut of Prime Rib. The waitress must have written it wrong, becuase they both received two enormous cuts of Prime Rib, both of which were not good. The service we received was crabby to say the least, even though two of us had told her we were servers and bartenders. The only thing we all agreed on were the desserts. We came back after the show for drinks and desserts, and those were great. I would reccomend the Bananas Foster cheesecake, if that kind of dessert is up your alley. Other than that, don't waste your $$ on the Prime Rib or the tip. Pros: dessert, good parking, shuttle to shows Cons: , expensive for quality, Prime Rib more

Uugghhh!! 3/7/2004

I moved here 10 years ago and have always heard of Carl's here and there. I finally went to check it out on Valentines day and I couldn't have been more disappointed. I had to send my lamb back 4 times!!! My wife's steak was covered in what tasted like canned gravy. Not good at all. The atmosphere is terrible. You feel like you are in a fancy Denny's, not a fancy steakhouse. The prices are high, but they are what you would expect in a nice steak house....not this dump. I would try to persuade my enemies to stay away from Carls. more

Best Food Around 2/1/2004

Forget all the crap people are saying about this place turning lousy. The valet is top-notch and responsive, and when you walk inside to eat your food comes reasonably quick. I've never had better beef anywhere else, and I've eaten filet, sirloin, burgers (unreal), prime rib, and steak. Chicken and lobster and other stuff are great too, the lobtster comes right from Maine! Go to Carls the next time you eat out, you won't regret it. Pros: Great Food, Excellent Valet, Complimentary Shuttle more

Still Going Strong 5/15/2003

As a newcomer to Detroit, I came across Carl's almost by accident. I was not aware of Carl's Chop House ""history"". I saw the sign and checked with friends, they shared positive comments and a little history, so I then tried Carl's Chop House. I went for a special dinner and was absolutely blown away, not only by the food (which was great) but also by the service and the attention to detail. Some examples were the server frequently checking to make certain we were please with our meals, as well as if anything else was wanted or needed. The steaks were prepared EXACTLY as requested by everyone (children and adults), all were satisfied. I have returned serveral times since my initial ""exposure"", I am still pleased and impressed. Carl's Chop House remains a very special dinning option for me and for my family. Pros: Food, Service, Location Cons: Outside Decor more

Lousy 2/4/2003

Carl's has been on the best list for awhile strictly because of good lobbying and history nothing else. Carl's is the best steakhouse in the over 30 years in business catagory, it's also the only one. As far as rating in the under 30 years in business catagory, it's not even in the top 30. Good financial planning kept this place in business, certainly not the food or ambience. more

Disappointed 1/31/2003

Ruth Chris's has really set the standard for what a steak should taste like, and what you would expect in a steakhouse. The plates need improvement, iceberg luttuce is not what I expect in a nice restaurant, many of the appetizers are not necessary. The dining room has a bit of an eary feeling, May be something can be done to make it cozier. In the Detroit Metro area, I would rank Carl's after Ruth Chris's, but above everyone else I tried. Still does not compare with steak houses in Texas, where the steak is soooo tender that you can only use your fork to eat it. Sorry guys. Pros: convenient location, decent steak, easy to get table Cons: expensive, steak not dry aged, did not like salad more

Unique 1/13/2003

I rate it as a solid value. One of Detroit's few remaining original great resturants. Great location, easily accessed by the major freeways. Pros: food is good, good location, lots of free parking more

After attending A Detroit Lions Football game we (4 MEN) stopped in and had one of the best steaks we have ever had. We all could have taken a few steaks home with us . The wine list was complete and resonable for 5 ***** restaurant . We enjoyed everything and the service was perfect too. more

Downtown oldstyle 8/7/2002

Carl's Chop House - I've been here a few times on trips to baseball games (old tiger stadium) and some special occasions. Our family has been coming here since my grandfather started the trend many years ago. This place makes a great meal for any sporting event, auto - show, or just special occasion. I usually get the filet mignon, its one of the best around. Pros: atmosphere, food Cons: pricey, area more
