Bad experience 7/25/2010

I went in for possible heart attack. I came by Ambulance. After I had to advise the ambulance crew that I was still on the pressure cuff, and to disconnect first before wheeling me out, in the ER room - I was left off the monitors, no nurse in attendance and ended up checking out with my husband and daughter in tow. I am still very depressed by the entire experience - I'm glad I didn't die. We found out that the problem was that they 'were busy', 'they never assigned a doctor' to me, and then the nurse shift ended. I would not recommend a visit to this hospital if you have a choice. Pros: I was able to check out Cons: Left alone without any monitors or nurses in ER more

Wish not wish that hospital on my worst enemy!!!! 12/16/2008

In September, 2008 I had surgery at the hospital, even though the doctors were GREAT the nursing staff was just terrible!!! They would leave me in the room for hours at end without even checking on me and I could NOT get out of bed. My cords from the IV and Pain Medicine dispensers would constantly get tangled, my arm would be stuck sticking out of the bed with not being able to move it and alarms were constantly going off, sometimes 15-20 minutes at a time while trying to rest. At one point I called for assistance and over an hour later no one had arrived even though they told me someone would be right there. I finally had to pick up my cell phone and call 411 and ask for the number for the hospital, I was connected to the switch board and explained this was not a joke, that I was a patient on the 5th Floor and could she please send someone to help me. Explaining that I had called for assistance over an hour ago and no one had showed up. Shortly after that I was visited by a nursing supervisor who could not believe the way the room looked with the cords all tangled, alarms going off and my leg machine not running properly causing potential clotting issues. She spent over an hour in my room and would have thought that after that things would have been better but they were the opposite! I could not wait to get out of that hospital and will NEVER go back!!! Since my ordeal I have heard several other similar stories!! I kept waiting for a patient survey but interestingly never received one however they didn't mind sending the bills right away! Pros: Doctors Cons: Nursing care!!!!!!!!!!!! more

Best Nurses!!! 12/15/2008

When I went into premature labor with our twins, my husband and I were told we could not give birth at the local hospital. We were given a choice of 3 areas with Neonatal Intensive Care Units. My husband had lived in that area in the past and loved the southern hospitality. We chose Roanoke ( Community Hospital at that time). Our stress was so high with a strange hospital, an hour and a half from home, and strange doctors. Our children required some care when they born and remained in the NICU for weeks. Roanoke treated our newborns with excellent care in a nurturing environment. I was also treated with respect and dignity. Before my surgery, the Resident Physician had already won my trust; Not an easy thing as I am a nurse. We still take our twins to see their nurses. If you want to be treated like family, this hospital is for you!! Pros: Highly Skilled Staff, Nurturing Environment, Staff Treat You Like Family more

They treated my son as if he was their own son..... 6/16/2008

My 16-year-old son,Jerame, was run over by a car last year while walking across the street in Lynchburg, Va. He was air lifted to Roanoke Memorial and began a long fight for his life....He was in the hospital for months, had his skull taken off to relieve the pressure in his head, had part of his brain removed, had a stroke, and was in an induced comma for quite a while....I believe God placed him in that hospital for a reason. The staff of nurses and all the doctors treated my son as if he was their own. Not only did they use their brains to help my son, I truly feel that they used their hearts. I stayed with him night and day and I saw how they treated him. I was so impressed with the way they were. My son is a miracle....he has gone through rehab and is ""98%"" who he was before. Even the doctors say he is a miracle to be in as good a shape as he is. I do know that anything is possible with God, and I know my son had God with him that night. When we asked him who was with him the night of the accident, he replied that Jesus was with him....""he was holding my hand"" was my sons reply. I also know that God gave these great doctors the intelligence to learn the life saving techniques that they use everyday to save people just like my son. So it is to God that I give my thanks and it is also to all the people at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, NTICU, who have dedicated their lives and hearts to doing such a wonderful job. Thank you for your part in saving my sons life. And I must say a Special Thank You to Dr. Lisa Apfel who performed the surgeries for my son and gave him excellent care for the past year. She is a very special Lady with a beautiful heart. My family and my son Thank You All! Julie Grubbs and family Pros: Everything more

Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital 5/23/2008

My father was direct admitted to the diolysis floor (7th floor). I had to go and get his identification bracelet from the nurses station 3 hours after he had been in his private room. Water was asked for on 5 different occasions before I had to go retrieve it from the nurses station. The breathing therapist took 5 hours to finally come to the room after she was asked to come up. It took many times asking to get a social worker to come to his room in order to set up diolysis at our local center. To top it off.......In 8 days after being admitted......He has seen a doctor for a total of about 15 minutes. The time that a doctor was talking to him they had no bedside manners and were very insensitive to him. My mother, who has been a nurse for 25 years, said this is the worst hospital she has ever seen. Wake Forest Baptist Hospital is 100 times better in all areas. I really do not know how they stay in business and how insurance companies like mine can send them the thousands of dollars they bill their patients. Pros: Emergency department Cons: Nurses and Doctors more

Roanoke Memorial Hospital 5/8/2007

I have never been treated as well as the staff in the Emergency Room, the X-Ray department or the ninth floor cardiology unit in Roanoke Memorial Hospital treated me.. They were thorough, testing for causes of my fall. They were diligent in their service and care: professional in manner, courteous in relationships, and friendly beyond expectations. If I rang for help, they came promptly. The nurses were punctial with medications; they oversaw all my comforts. They were always neatly and properly dressed. One of the best things that they did for me was to find a vein without all the excruciating suffering of searching. Zap! The butterfly was estabilshed!\r The food was delicious, the cold things cold and the hot things hot. There was no waiting and no smelling the dirty dishes afterward.\r I broke two bones in my face and cut myself above my eye with my crushed glasses as I fell in the Burgher King Parking Lot. From the time I entered the Emergency Room until the time I checked out two days later, I was not allowed to feel pain.\r I am ever grateful to all of the staff at Roanoke Memorial Hospital Pros: Efficient phlebotomists, excellent nursing care. Cons: None, except I would rather have been visiting my son. We had travelled from our home inNC that morning. more
