STAY AWAY 12/18/2011

I have lived in these apartments for 7 months now (as of December 19, 2011)and needless to say I will not be renewing my lease in the spring. First off the management company we moved in under employed at the worst liars and at best people who would misrepresent the apartment complex to prospective tenants. When we toured the complex, I specifically asked how much the average utility bill was. The woman who was guiding us quoted a $150 bill as the average. She then showed us probably the only two nice apartments on the property which sold my two roommates on the idea of living here. When move in day came we received a sheet of paper to document any damages from the previous tenants and with in an hour I had filled every blank space on both the front and the back. And because we had already signed the lease there wasn't anything to be done but wait our 12 months to get out of here. Here are just some of the highlights of my complaints about the shoddy apartments. Utilities: amount quoted was $150, the average cost of utilities for the first 6 months was $300. Their justification was that none of the units were individually metered and the utility bill was split according to the unit's square footage. Because we had the biggest unit in the building we paid more. So even if we set our AC at 90F during the summer, we'd still be paying money for the rest of the building even though we'd use less electricity. Unit upkeep: This one needs to be broken down by room. The kitchen: the apartment complex under the previous management (not BH) claimed to have fixed up the apartment prior to move in. However, as stated in my opening paragraph, the place was very much run down. There are holes in the back of our kitchen cabinets where electrical wires for the stove come through the wall and snake their way through the cabinet, water damage in all of the kitchen cabinets (even the ones without water pipes near them) and shoddy patching of holes in the pantry. The Dishwasher does not drain properly and somehow backs water up into the sink through the disposal. the bathrooms: the pipes burst under the sink within a week of move in, and the sinks still don't drain properly in spite of having maintenance out to fix them. Tile is broken on the floor and bathtub while the sealant is falling away from the toilet that takes three flushes to remove everything. Bedrooms and living room: the procedure to "fix up" these rooms appears to have been to bring in white spray paint and spray down every surface in the room, except of course the carpet (if you could call this reeking weave of fiber carpet). The doors to the closets were almost off their hinges which I had to fix because "it looks like you tried to take them off" and the windows to one bedroom wouldn't lock. To remedy the broken lock the maintenance workers saw fit to place a few Lego like pieces of plastic in the space between the two panes and call it fixed. The living room has no ceiling light which meant we had to buy a couple of lamps to light the space instead, and there were more poorly patched holes in the walls and ceiling. Outside: They should advertise our unit as lake side property because when it rains we have a three inch deep pool of water we have to walk through to leave the apartment the extends all the way to our neighbor's door. The one good thing i can say about this apartment is NEW MANAGEMENT. In August BH management bought these apartments, so maybe they will do a better job than Aspen Square. I wont be sticking around to find out. more
