The Scene
One of Tahoe's titans, Alpine's reputation for having the longest season in the region, typically running until Memorial Day, is based on the huge catch-basin known as Alpine Bowl, which stockpiles snow in copious amounts when storms roll across Ward Peak (elevation 8,637 feet). Sherwood, the back bowl, is the most distant section of the resort; it offers sunny, east-facing slopes with open powder fields for intermediates and experts. From the top of the Summit Quad, skiers have a 360-degree panorama of the lake and surrounding peaks.
What to Expect
Snowboards are now permitted at Alpine. Purists, the older crowd and classic, proficient skiers are the main clientele. The place has a European quality, with steep slopes and aging double chairlifts. It's worth noting that winds atop Ward Peak can be fierce during inclement weather.
