Fab hand shaken Margarita's! 7/28/2008

I love the smell as you enter this restaurant. What is that spice? I can taste it in the salsa. \r I am from Texas and I moved to Smith Mountain lake 21 years ago. The hardest thing to adjust to was the lack of really good Mexican food in the Roanoke area. Not anymore! Abuelo's is here! The chips are light and crisp. They don't get stingy with them either. We waited an hour on late friends to arrive and enjoyed a plentiful supply of chips and salsa with our hand shaken Margarita's. Our dinner was very good and I ordered a side of guacamole and got enough to share with everyone. My husband ordered fajitas and I ordered a side of extra tortilla's so I could share a couple of his fajitas. I was not impressed with the meat on the trio they gave, not really enough to share. Most Mexican rest. we easily share and I have plenty along with the sides I order. Not here. So, guy's... Where's the beef?\r Our waitress was attentive and of fun. Our guys tend to kid around a bit and she not only took it well, she joked back. Lots of fun and the food was great. Pros: the best tasting mexican food in town Cons: don't try to share the fajita's, not enough meat. more

BEST MEXICAN FOOD OUTSIDE OF TEXAS! 8/31/2007

I live in the Raleigh, NC area and will drive 3 1/2 hours just to eat here. Their queso is the BEST - though they keep a tight lip on the recipe :( \r \r The Sonora dish is excellent, as is the Juarez. The best dish in the house is the Pechuga con Calabaza, though I think recently they have renamed it to something like chicken with zucchini (they should stick with the original name - this is a Mexican restaurant after all). The tamales are excellent (and you get one on both the Sonora and Juarez, which is why their such dishes! Order the papas, don't mess with the rice - papas are definitely the way to go. \r \r Their chips are nice, light and crispy, though they could stand to fill the bowl up just a bit more so you don't run out so often. Don't bother with the flour tortillas, unless of course you have fajitas. \r \r The only thing this restaurant chain could do better is build a location in Raleigh! Pros: Best Mexican outside of Texas Cons: flour tortillas more
