We had a major problem with the well on our new house. There was so much black grit in the water, the health officer in our town ordered the builder to drill a new well. The new well was deeper and somewhat better, but there still was some black grit and a strong sulfur odor in water. A total of three water services companies worked on the problem over a seven year period, but in spite of installing large chlorinating, water softening and carbon filter systems, the problems persisted. The black grit caused staining on our toilets that was impossible to remove unless we used hydrofluoric acid (Wink). I was getting ready to drill a new well when I asked the guys at my favorite plumbing supply company what I should do. Their reply was to call Burke's Pump Service. Burke's came to our house and diagnosed the problem as magnesium sulfate in the water which can be removed by water softening.
