Let me start by saying Dr. Ames came very highly recommended from a friend of mine. I paid her a visit because I'd been struggling to fight off some plantar fasciitis issues and wanted to get a professional opinion before I started exercising full-time again. The visit itself was passable (at best). Her bedside manner was average, but it took me multiple questions to get a detailed explanation from her, and she looked decidedly annoyed that I had to be explained anything in the first place. \r

Beyond that, my true gripe comes from her prescribing for me an off-the-shelf ""orthotic"" night splint, which she said was covered by my insurance. Part of me is kicking myself for taking her at her word that it would be covered without getting pre-authorization from my insurance for said ""orthotic"" or without looking to see if I could get the splint cheaper elsewhere (it's $20 on amazon). A bigger part of me is just feels deceived based on the bill I received from Dr. Ames months later. The aforementioned ""orthotic"" was billed out at $300 to my insurance company (who passed the bill right on to me). Did I mention this splint is $20 on amazon? \r

Worth mentioning is the fact that she also prescribed me a shoe insert which I could buy at a number of stores...which begs the question why wasn't there a similar recommendation or option for the splint? So, upon calling to inquire about either A) returning the splint or B) why this inexpensive, off-the-shelf item is marked up 1500%, Dr. Ames' office didn't have any answers. They couldn't even tell me where the $300 price tag came from. How does one run a practice and not know what one's charging? I'm still waiting on a call back from Dr. Ames herself to get some answers there (it's been 3 days and counting). I'll update this if anything is clarified.\r

Ultimately this whole situation has completely turned me off to Dr. Ames. She may have come highly recommended, but I'd be doing the rest of the world a disservice if I didn't shed a little light on this seemingly greedy and inept part of her practice. And we wonder why the healthcare system is so flawed.
