I recommend you tour this facility and closely question the staff before you take the significant risk of placing someone you love in this facility. My experience with Select varied from difficult to nightmarish. My husband transferred there to be weaned from his vent. I will say the respiratory staff made a good effort at this, but his progress was limited by incompetent nursing (multiple line infections, pressure sores, leaking, pulled or sometimes completely absent chest tubes--many times I found him lying in linens which were soaked down to the mattress from fluid oozing from open and undressed chest tube openings) and by physicians who swept in, listened once with a stethoscope then blew back out again. Case management was equally disastrous; after seeing the case manager screw up at least three of my husband's room mates discharges, I was still not prepared for the two hour notice I received that he was being transferred to a skilled nursing facility, even though he had a high fever and had lost the ability to swallow overnight. When I questioned whether he was being dumped, the case manager told me ""we did everything we were required to do by his DRG a month ago"". Ironically, he was discharged on the last day of his hospital insurance. So, if you do decide to use Select, I strongly urge you to review your insurance benefits, keep a calendar tracking your hospital insurance days, get an outside nurse case manager to supervise your case and make the acquaintance of a good malpractice attorney.
