I knew someone that worked for him in the past they warned me that he is a shady mechanic but he does knows his stuff or knows the “tricks” of the trade (depends how you look at it.)So I was told that he’s less expensive than other marine shops and I should get treated right if I tell him who I was referred by. So after talking with him he sounded like a good guy that was very honest. So we agree that on all my carbs are to be completely rebuilt. (I just bought this engine and yes engine ran before he touched it). I paid for a complete rebuild with adjustments etc. and I was looking forward to hear a difference with engine idle and faster start time. So I get call from him a few hours later job was complete. Wow I thought that was quick. (Since he said it would take a few days because of other customers boats are waiting also.) OK, so I get there and he asks me if I would like to hear it. I am standing there while he tries multiple types to start it. (I’m thinking to myself what the hell) and ask him should it start the quicker now that the carbs are rebuilt. Finally it starts he play with adjustments and tells me that the engine is an older model engine so I can’t get that result unless I replace everything (which of course he is happy to do.) Ok so he the professional boat mechanic and I’m not even familiar with the engine yet. I end up paying a few hundred for his time (whatever that was.) So ok I’m home and run the engine I’m standing there watching this black stuff running down the engine coming from the carbs. I get the idea that I was just screwed over so I call some other mechanic in the area and they confirm my hunch. They all tell me (3 different professional boat mechanics) that the black stuff is from either Carb. Cleaner or C-foam being used in carbs and not a result of rebuild carbs. There is nothing I can do unless I pay someone else to do the rebuild to prove it. So, basically he will do what he can get away with and not necessarily what you pay for. His attitude changes after he gets the $.
