The Cathedral is the mother church of the Episcopal Diocese in New York and the home of its Bishop. Considered the world's largest gothic cathedral, "Big John" as it is affectionately known in the community, also does extensive community outreach, hosts artistic events and religious services.
I've visited the Cathedral many times and always marvel at its majesty. Worship on a Sunday morning and you'll sit shoulder to shoulder with parishioners from every part of the city and state. Visit the Cathedral at other times of the week and you may be attending a concert, lecture series or participating in a stone building course.
Tour the campus and learn firsthand some of the Cathedral's remarkable history. Public Tours of less than 10 people are held: Tuesday - Saturday at 11 AM and Sunday at 1 PM. Meet at the Visitors Center and walk through the bustling nave and through the seene chapels to learn about this grand structure.
Group tours and School Group Tours are also available and can be arranged by calling 212-932-7347.
The Cathedral experienced a devastating fire in late 2001 damaging the Great Organ, one of the world's most reknown instruments. It sits silent now, as do all of the Cathedrals organs and you should definitely return to the Cathedral to listen to its magnificent sound once cleaning and restoration have been completed.
