Avoid it at all costs! 9/26/2006

I have purchased something like 15 used cars in my 25 years in Seattle at all types of used dealerships, and can tell you that this was the most unprofessional ownership that I have encountered - and I am a neighbor of the business, with my office next door! The 97 Saab 900 that I bought was handed over to me on the day I payed for it in filthy condition, not vacuumed, bone dry gas tank, and multiple bulbs out all around the car. I knew that there were things that would need work (front brakes, tires, windshield), but there was NO pride that they took in the sale. They never returned calls that I made in the weeks following the purchase, when I just needed help or info with things like radio codes. Of course, the transmission needing replacement after 1 month/1,000 miles was the real ringer - after $800 in various diagnostic and attempted repair costs, it was determined that the full job was necessary - and I spoke with the owner - Steve Spencer - to find out if he would help in some way, to do what was right regardless of the "as is" clause that dealers always fall back on. He promised me, clearly and specifically, twice, that he would contribute $750 towards the job (was estimated to be between $1700 and $2600 depending on the shop). Based on that, I had the job done at his recommended shop, after which he backed out of the promise. Had all sorts of reasons, including blaming the decision on his brother, but basically backpedaled completely despite knowing EXACTLY what he told me he would do. Now I own a car that might be valued at $7000 on its best day in perfect condition, and I have invested a total of $10,000+ in under 6 months. Not a great equation. This dealership is either in a difficult financial position (so that it can't afford $750 to do the right thing), or the ownership lacks integrity, or both - but either way, it makes for a dangerous place to spend your money. Do so at your own risk. more
