The Mountaineer Family Restaurant is the place to go if you are looking for good home cooked food with reasonable prices. This restaurant has been part of Parkersburg for many years and has withstood the alteration of the highway addition when the "high end" and "fast food" eateries did not. The Mountaineer's parking lot is still packed. You are not going to find elegant dining there, you are not going to find fancy decor, or wait staff with glittery uniforms holding trays high above their heads and twirling like acrobats. Another reviewer wrote that this was "the" place to come and watch "the locals". In fact, this is the place that has given the elderly an affordable place to eat on a pension income, the young family a place to bring their children with more than adequate seating and no extra charge for "splitting portions", and the late night traveler a place to stop off and have coffee and fresh deserts. The other reviewer also stated that no one could mess up a banana split - how I wish that person had instead ordered their Apple Dumpling! I don't know that you can get that anywhere else in Parkersburg and it is one of my favorite indulgent treats. Not everyone has a fancy for liver and onions; but if you do - The Mountaineer is the place to go. When you order it, be prepared to take some home - it is not possible to complete the serving you get! Last, but not least, The Mountaineer Family Restaurant was one of the first, if not the first, restaurant in Parkersburg to provide smokers (yes, I am one of those dirty beasts) with a totally enclosed and isolated room. Please don't go there to watch the locals, I urge you to go there to eat some of the finest home-cooked meals in town. As for the side dishes - the pintos are fantastic!
