A new jazz club has opened up in Ballard and it is a welcome addition to the downtown area particularly as it helps to attract new life to the eastern side of NW Market St. We've always been fans of the Market Street Grill and it's nice to have more places moving this direction than everything just being on Ballard Ave.
Egan's replaced the old Penny Cafe' and it's been quite a transformation. The interior is now red and black with an intimate swanky yet subdued look - likely better at night than during daylight hours. A long booth seating area in the back is a favored spot for getting reservations for shows. There are usually two sets per night with one group beginning at 8pm and another set at 10pm.
Food and beverages are served with the food leaning to the southern USA - items like red beans and rice, gumbo and more are on the menu. Right now there is only beer and wine on the adult beverage menu but I'm hoping they'll expand to a full liquor license later. Jazz just sounds better with a martini. For now though the house wine (at $5 per glass) is a good deal and tasty at that.
