I love the atmosphere at R. Stanely's. It reminds me of a cool Chicago jazz club. Upon walking in, it is obvious the owner has great style. After walking in the resturant for the first time though, I didn't think he had a good sense of Kalamazoo. The hostess was unbelieveably pretencious. Apparently the fact that I hadn't made a reservation was unacceptable (this IS Kalamazoo, there are VERY few places where you make reservations, especially if it is located in a strip mall!!), I turned and walked right out. If they didn't want my business, I wasn't going to give it to them. Upon the begging of my boyfriend, I decided to give it another shot. We arrived (without reservations) and this time we were seated. The wait staff was pleasant. The food was good, albeit pricey. They redeeming feature was the dessert. They have some of the BEST cheesecake I've ever had in my life.. the cheese cake company doesn't even compare. For about $5 a slice, I was treated to the richest, creamest, thickest slice of chocolate chip cheese cake I have ever encountered. It was fantastic. They were out of my first choice of cheese cake, but after a few bites of the chocolate chip variety, I'd totally forgotten. The rude service, however, I'm a little less likely to forget... My advice for R. Stanley's, proceed with caution. more
