I have been to CHOP with both of my kids, numerous times. My oldest son was transferred there at birth and had two procedures in the next two months. My youngest son was transfered there from Abington Hospital and admitted, and several times since. Both kids have medical issues.
In our experience at CHOP we have been so impressed with how wonderful of a hospital it is. Everything from their security, to their kindness has BLOWN me away. I have had a couple of interactions with a few of the staff that left me a little uneasy, but I think that was just horrible bedside manners, and not a reflection of the hospital itself. One incident was someone telling us how sick our son was, instead of following everyone elses lead by saying he would be okay. The other incident was with a couple of neurologists who were pretty much telling me who I had to follow up with instead of giving me options. They pretty much demanded I go to them instead of my local CHOP center outside of Philly.
There are tons of activities for the kids to do. The rooms are child friendly and in each section there are rooms with tons of toys. There are computers everywhere for access. Upstairs there is a lounge for adults to rest. One time when we stayed we were given "rooms" that were private... which is rare, but they do have them available for parents of PICU kids. There are always volunteers coming around to cheer kids up. Among the times that we were there we saw clowns, dogs, people giving out stuffed animals, and people coming by just to talk if you felt like you needed to. I just feel myself getting welled up inside just thinking about how wonderful they are.
