El Borrego is one of those places that if you blink, you'll miss it. It's right on Congress, before you get to Ben White.
Their breakfast menu has your usual fare but they have great and cheap plates. However, dinner is where it's at for Borrego. Their birria is their house specialty. It's a soup of shredded meat, onions, cilantro and served with lime on the side. It's truly something you need to try. The description doesn't quite do it justice.
The birria ($6.95), one of the house specialties, delivered a lamb soup filled with tender shredded meat in a spicy red broth, with chopped onions, cilantro and lime on the side to add at the diner's discretion. Accompanied by corn tortillas, the unusual soup was delicious.
